Gears of War 3 Sells More Than 3m Copies in First Week

Microsoft and Epic have reason to celebrate. The highly anticipated end to the Gears trilogy - Gears of War 3 - has eclipsed 3 million units first week. This covers a period of 5 days in both Americas and EMEAA. This both marks 50% growth over Gears of War 2 and means that it outsold the first weeks of both previous iterations combined.
Gears of War 3 also claims the biggest launch of 2011 so far, surpassing Pokemon Black /White's western debut. It also claims the 6th biggest X360 launch week all-time, worldwide, just behind Grand Theft Auto IV.
Gears of War 3 saw decent growth in both Americas and EMEAA, selling 2.15M units in Americas (up 850,000, 65%) and 850,000 in EMEAA (up 260,000, 31%). The franchise typically sees around 6-6.5 million units lifetime, but Gears 3 is set to buck the trend and should surpass 8 million units.

I am tempted to get a 360 this holiday just for this game. Very sweet!!!

90% of multiplatform games end up being better on 360 which is the only reason its still in the game.

Arcade consoles are so cheap on Black Friday/Boxing Day. For $130 (thats the price I saw it for last year) It's worth getting.
I also recommend Halo: Reach, Forza, Splinter Cell Conviction, and Alan Wake.

Awesome. It deserves it. I am glad that people arent listeningg to the reviewers who obviously haavent got a clue about the Gears franchise. Its one of the most polished games this gen not just this year. The campaign is the best action campaign out there and is visually amazing. The multiplayer is also the first to actually tear me away from Reach properly. Well done Epic. You are now one of my most respected devs. Would love for them to be a 2nd party studio to Microsoft. Again well done.

I don't see how all those reviewers were ripping up gears 3 say it was same ole stuff. I don't think they played it.

Yeah, a 91 Metacritic score is horrible. These reviewers are horrible. I agree it's a great game. I just don't see what you're trying to say.

So only about 150k non-preorder sales in Americas or were the preorders overtracked?
Preorder was overtracked... the Microsoft said 1.5 million when VGC said 2 million.

Are you sure? At E3 Epic games said they had over 1 million pre-orders, and VGC had it at 800k for Americas. It's hard to believe the game only added 500k pre-oders in the last 3 months before release.
I'm hoping week 1 sales are under-tracked.

With the multiplayer actually worth staying around for, look for gears to outsell Gears 2 considerably. It's so nice to have a multiplayer that doesn't make you wanna go out and by the next copy of COD.

no it doesn't...most gears players left in droves after only a couple of weeks and the numbers from xbox live proved it...gears 2 fell out of the top 10 way too fast. I expect gears 3 number to stay up towards the top of xbox live well into next year.
Just curious, but why did you enjoy gears 2 MP? It struggled with peer to peer to play and weapon balance was horrible.

Well said, and good point. The new horde 2.0 mod keeps me happy cause i hate playing with brats. I would rather just kill baddies with my real friends online.

me and all my friends disagree. i know about 10 people who have played both gears for years getting the seriously achievevments 2wice over. NONE of them like gears 3 as much as the previous games.

GoW 3 definitely surpass my expectations. Best GoW game so far. This time Epic and Microsoft made it right.
What if sales are just more front loaded then other Gears? To be honest week 1 sales disappoint me. This is the best Gears to date, and it had 2 million pre-orders. Selling 2.15 million units means that 95% of sales were pre-orders. Is VGC off, or were 360 owners starving for a AAA exclusive?

It's no surprise about the sales of this game. Everyone with a 360 would have to buy this, it's the only good exclusive coming out for 360 this year. Putting this info in an article is a waste of time. I can't believe I even read the headline.
there were a few game sites that proclaimed this would be the worst selling Gears so far.. so it looks like they were probably wrong.. this game will definately outsell the first Gears ... and more then likely the 2nd ..

gears is one of my favorite new franchises this gen, 6M sold by yrs end ;-)
This game actually lived up to the hype, and the multiplayer is awesome. My son, who was never a gears fan, loves this game. Thanks Epic, for not letting us down.

These numbers are well-deserved. I think it's the best game in the franchise, and an excellent conclusion to the trilogy.

Am I allowed to doubt these numbers? I knew Gears 3 would outsell the other two but this is almost COD/Halo numbers.

ALmost COD and Halo numbers? Evidentally you have no clue what you're talking about.. Halo Reach did 3 million FIRST DAY, COD Black Ops did more then that FIRST DAY... Gears 3 did 3 million in A WEEK
