The Americas Preview: 9/24 Edition (Gears of War 3's Massive Debut) - News

For the purposes of this article, all data used is preliminary and may differ from final numbers.
Blockbuster game Gears of War 3 finally launched this week after being delayed from its previous April release date. It opened to around 2.3 million (may fluctuate 10% either way, and should pass 3 million worldwide). A 2.3 million opening in Americas puts it on a par with Black Ops PS3 and Grand Theft Auto IV X360's debuts.
DS got another Kirby game this week, Kirby Mass Attack achieved around 40-45k units. F1 2011 also debuted this week to 50k units combined.
Hardware should be relatively flat for all this week, bar the X360 which should see a 50-60k unit bump off the back of Gears 3, mostly from the limited edition console.

Why are people disapointed by Gears3? It's a ~50% bump from Gears2 first week, and I'm sure the devs will be happy.
It's because of GoW and Halo that the X360 is alive.
@kowenicki: Probably it will be just the most frontloaded Gears as the original launch date was already in April and there was huge beta after it. Not to mention the competition it will get from MW3 and BF3 over the holidays.
this pains me to admit MS are doing so well in Gears 3 sales, I'd be very surprised if Sony sold a million units of Resistance 3 before 2011. and even if they do it pales in comparison to what MS are doing.

This doesn't factor in the (albeit) smaller boost it'll receive in EMEAA

So, X360 will reclaim 1st place in the Americas for this week. I hope one day we have a WW preview feature.

Gears broke my opening week expectations selling more than 1 and 2 combined opening weeks. 8-10 million lifetime
Man I was hoping for more from Gears 3.
Why? it's a FPS. IT's sold more than 1st and 2nd during their first weeks. Why would you expect it to sell more? Stop comparing everything to COD.

The game had 2 million pre-orders, was there really only 300k shelf pick ups? Halo Reach had the same number of pre-orders and 1 million shelf pick ups.
Also Gears is more popular in EMEAA then Americas, and if attach rates per region are similar to Gears 2, there should be 800k pre-orders in EMEAA.
This game should do over 3.5 million week one, something is fishy.

all this ' Gears will sell more than or as much as reach worldwide fw' its going to be a million short. people were saying that for so long. just shows you shouldnt look to much into pre-orders. great sales nun the less.
Think they were talking about Microsofts 4 million estimate they sent out this week.
The pre orders are fucking BS. I said this months ago and i'll say this again. When you force consumers to PRE ORDER the game to play the BETA then you're going to get exaggerated Pre Order numbers. I work in Retail and i know for a fact dozens of people who pre ordered gears 3 for the beta didn't even bother picking their game up this week so we ended up cancelling them.
If you gave ouy BETA coides for MOdern Warfare 3 for peopel who preordered that then the Pre order numbers would be staggeringly high.
