Sony to Launch PS Vita in Japan on December 17 - News

by VGChartz Staff , posted on 14 September 2011 / 5,850 Views

Sony has announced that the PS Vita is launching in Japan just before the end of 2011 on December 17, 2011. The Japanese holiday season peaks in January, so Vita should have a very strong launch, as hardware typically launches in November in Japan. Sony's PSP launched in Japan in November 2004, and so the space between the two portables will be seven years.

At the moment there is still no word on when Vita will launch in the West, although its all but assured not to release in 2011 now, as has previously been speculated. Sony previously intended to launch the device globally by the end of March 2012.

Vita uses 3G and non-3G networks for certain types of play. Reports state that 3G play will cost $13 for 20 hours and $65 in 100 hours.

The Japanese launch line up for Vita is said to be the following games:

Hell's Army
DJ Max Technika
Katamari
Browser 3 Kingdom
Bass Fishing
F1 2011
Dragon's Crown
God Eater 2
Escape Plan
Sound Shapes
Sawari Makuru (translates to Touching Lots)
Super Stardust Delta
Reality Fighter 0
WipeOut
Ridge Racer

Additional titles in development include:

Zone of the Enders HD Edition
Metal Gear Solid HD Edition
Super Robot Taisen Series
Shin Megami Tensei Series
Gundam Series
Tales of Innocence R

With the late-launch in 2011 its very unlikely that many Vita titles will crack the Japanese top 10, 20, or 40 games of 2011, but the system should rapidly become a major factor in the Japanese market in 2012.

assuming those games are any good, that's not a bad launch line-up IMO. There are several games on that list I'd be interested in buying: Wipeout, Katamari, Reality Fighters...

Vita is multi-region right? Any news about video output to a TV?

Looking at the launch line up for the PS Vita for Japan it already seems to have a better launch than what Nintendo's 3DS had. Here's hoping that when it come to launching globally that all these titles and then some will be available on launch day for the rest of us.

Hm, not a really great launch lineup. Like the 3DS launch.

Better than the 3DS launch I think but still pretty weak. I guess the US/EMEAA titles will probably have more titles that western audiences will appreciate, these titles seem to mostly be titles that will do well in Japan but bomb elsewhere.

This looks like a very different list from what Sony has released. If this is true then I'm really excited for DJ Max Technika. Please be true. And also by different I meant this list http://andriasang.com/comy5q/.

I wonder how good Tales of Innocence R will look, and I really really hope it gets localized.

Just to remember some people disregarding the launch titles, most also doesn't interest me, but this is launching in Japan so ask the japanese gamers if those games matter to them before thinking it's a weak launch line-up.

That's a solid launch to be fair. More importantly is that the launch window sees several AAA games.

Oh man, and it was previously thought that the PSV wasn't going to make it out until spring. Looks like there will be war this winter, at least in Japan. 3DS still gets a free lap this christmas in the US and EU as far as we know.

Monteblanco (on 14 September 2011)

It may be better tha 3DS's line up. Still, it is not that interesting. As usual, it is better to wait a few months to get a recent launched console.

i wonder why its not a WW release?

  • 0
mjk45 MARCUSDJACKSON (on 14 September 2011)

takes a lot of resources to do a hardware launch WW and meet your time frame ,what tends to happen is you just split your limited stock plus the Japanese still like to open at home especially with vita being a handheld it also it gives them time to iron out any kinks in the supply chain before hitting the other markets.
