Final Fantasy XI Heading over to PlayStation Vita?

Final Fantasy XIV is taking a huge drain on Square Enix's finances and reputation, and it looks like they're exploring possibilities to win back their MMO fans. One such way Square Enix might explore is porting over their last MMO, Final Fantasy XI, over to the PlayStation Vita.

Hiromichi Tanaka, Final Fantasy XI's project lead, has recently stated that Square Enix is looking into porting Final Fantasy XI for the PlayStation Vita, which would make it the biggest MMO to grace a portable console. He clarified, though, that there were no plans to bring FInal Fantasy XI to PS3, explaining that the PS3's hardware makes the port difficult.

While Final Fantasy XI has a large cult following, it's surprising that Square Enix would be willing to port it over to the Vita. Final Fantasy XI is almost ten years old, and who knows how much longer Square Enix can or will keep the servers running.

Between Final Fantasy XI's possible port and Final Fantasy XIV's further troubles, it looks like Square Enix has a lot going on in the MMO world still.

PS3 hardware makes a port difficult? I call BS. Several developers already released remastered PS2 titles on the PS3. Also, PS Vita is said to make cross-platform developing between Vita and PS3 easy as pie. Why are they lying? Still I wonder why don't just develop Vita-friendly FFXIV version instead of FFXI. XIV is still supposed to be released on PS3, and cross-play between Vita and PS3 versions (heck, maybe even PC) would be a serious sales driver, even if the game is just mediocre.

Wow Square needs to fire their management and PR. I mean really? PS3 architecture makes it to hard? PS Vita games can cross compile on PS3 for pete's sake!

I hope so it would be cool to see games like that on the vita.

This is some bad journalism right here. FFXI is the main source of income year after year for SE since 2002. FACT.

FFXI doesn't hav the charm it once had. The Abysea expansion pretty much killed it. Leveling 10-75 use to be a learning experience. Now its around 65~90 is a joke to level and the lastest Tab system means people just level off easy prey. You can pretty much take a 75 to 90 in one session. It is funny, the catch to having it so easy is uncapped skills. level 90's getting owned by steelcrabs is just one example. 75 was the perfect cap it should have been left that way but I guess with FFXIV massive fail they have to keep milking XI.

Why would they do that? FFXI is crap. How are you going to chat with the Vita. Are they going to have a touch screen like the IPod? I wouldn't even waste my time trying to play a MMO on a handheld. It would have to be something simple that doesn't require a lot of screens and button mashing. I was shocked when they transferred that mess to the XBox 360. No one was asking for it on the 360. I wanted Dragon Quest X, FF XIII vs and FF1-XII anthology.

How the heck are you supposed to TYPE on the Vita? And what about storage? It took almost 8 hours to download and update FFXI on my new laptop, and that's with all the expansions and add-on scenarios... Here's the storage of the game + expansions on my laptop: Final Fantasy XI: 4.25 GB (may include the add-on scenarios in this one) Chains of Promathia: 1.05 GB Rise of Zilart: 930 MB Treasures of Aht Urhgan: 772 MB Wings of the Goddess: 642 MB So...how are you going to store all of that data? You'd need a HUGE memory card for the Vita, and that won't be easy...

The PSV cards range from 4GB to 8GB of which the save data and DLC can be stored without the need for memeory cards.

And as for the typing, you do know PSV has a touchscreen right?
