Top Ten Games to take Duke Nukem Forever's Place
by Jake Weston, posted on 06 June 2011 / 15,968 ViewsIt's been a long wait for Duke Nukem Forever, but now, it looks like its release is finally just over the horizon. With Forever unleashed into the world, something is gonna have to fill the "in development so long that it's funny" void that it's leaving behind. Here are those games.
10. Black Mesa

Black Mesa is almost as infamous as Half-Life 3 in terms of anticipation. First announced in 2004, Black Mesa is a fan made remake of the original Half-Life using the Source engine, being developed in response to Valve's lackluster Half-Life: Source. Intended to be released as a free download, Black Mesa's release date is now officially TBA after years of delays.
9. Freedom Fighters 2

Modern Warfare 2 and Homefront may feature America being invaded by opposing countries, but Freedom Fighters did it first, and, frankly, it did it better. Featuring an alternate universe where Russia wins the Cold War and invades modern day America, Freedom Fighters actually makes you feel like a member of a resistance, liberating sections of New York City one at a time, all with some of the best squadmate control in gaming.Freedom Fighters ended on a cliffhanger, but we have still yet to see a sequel since the game's 2003 release. IO Interactive has said the game is on their "to-do" list, let's just hope it's fairly high up.
8. I Am Alive

Set in Chicago during the aftermath of a massive earthquake, I Am Alive challenges players to simply survive. This can be accomplished in a multitude of ways, including searching for food and water, competing with other survivors for resources, and you can even bluff other survivors with an empty gun. Announced in 2008, we have yet to see so much as gameplay footage. Ubisoft has said that the game is still under way, but that they are "totally re-engineering development." We've got a long wait ahead of us.
7. Beyond Good & Evil 2

Beyond Good & Evil was by far one of the best games of the last generation, and fans have been eagerly awaiting a sequel. Unfortunately, development for this game has been rocky. Beyond Good & Evil 2 was first announced in 2008, and all we have so far are a measly two trailers. Like I Am Alive , Ubisoft insists that the game is still in development, but fans' hopes were shaken when it was revealed this year that the team was taking a break from the title to work on Rayman Origins.
6. Final Fantasy VII Remake

This one is a long shot, I know, but bear with me. Ever since Square Enix's 2005 tech demo of the opening scene of Final Fantasy VII running on the PS3, fans have been begging for a full fledged remake. Unfortunately, Square Enix has repeatedly stated that they have no intentions of remaking the hugely successful title. Surely they must have thought about how much profit it would make them, and with Square Enix's financial woes as of late, it is possible they may reconsider their position.
5. Metroid Dread

Metroid Dread is something of a mystery, and may not even exist. Rumored back in 2005 to be a sidescroller for the Nintendo DS, little has been said of Metroid Dread. Even series creater Yoshio Sakamoto has yet to give a straight answer on its status, other than it's in development. Outside of a mention of "Project Dread" in Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, amost nothing is known about this game. Could it end up being a 3DS title? Or will it release for Project Cafe?
4. Max Payne 3

Max Payne 3 is surely one of the most delayed games of recent times. First slated for a late 2009 release, the game has been pushed back to 2012, and its possible it won't even release then. The first game in the series to not be developed by Remedy Entertainment (developers of last year's Alan Wake), Max Payne 3 is instead being made by Rockstar Vancouver. While no one is sure as to why the game has been delayed so much, it's entirely possible that it's due to Rockstar Vancouver also allegedly working on Bully 2.
3. Agent

Rockstar's Agent (not to be confused with Sony's recently cancelled The Agency) has been in development since 2007, and...that's all we know. Being developed by Rockstar North of Grand Theft Auto fame, it can only be assumed that this PS3 exclusive will follow in the same free-roam vein that Red Dead Redemption and L.A. Noire have built upon. Unless there's some sort of surprise announcement at this year's E3, expect to wait awhile for this one.
2. Kingdom Hearts III

After years and years of annoying spin-off titles, it's about time that Kingdom Hearts III gets made. Creator Tetsuya Nomura has stated that development on Kingdom Hearts III has yet to begin due to being too busy working on Final Fantasy Versus XIII, yet he still has time to release come out with what seems to be at least two Kingdom Hearts spin-offs a year. Just give us Kingdom Hearts III already!
1. Half-Life 3

How could anything BUT Half-Life 3 make the top of this list? After stating that they are shying away from episodic content, it can be inferred that Valve is probably making Half-Life 3 as opposed to Half-Life 2: Episode Three, which is great. What's the hold-up? We understand that you want to take your time making the game, Valve, but at least give us an announcement or something. It's been a full seven years since Half-Life 2 and almost four since Episode Two, and the wait is almost unbearable. Get on it, Valve.
