Top Ten Games to take Duke Nukem Forever's Place

by Jake Weston, posted on 06 June 2011 / 15,968 Views

It's been a long wait for Duke Nukem Forever, but now, it looks like its release is finally just over the horizon. With Forever unleashed into the world, something is gonna have to fill the "in development so long that it's funny" void that it's leaving behind. Here are those games.

10. Black Mesa

Gordon Freeman: Boss

Black Mesa is almost as infamous as Half-Life 3 in terms of anticipation. First announced in 2004, Black Mesa  is a fan made remake of the original Half-Life using the Source engine, being developed in response to Valve's lackluster Half-Life: Source. Intended to be released as a free download, Black Mesa's release date is now officially TBA after years of delays.

9. Freedom Fighters 2

Freedom Fighters

Modern Warfare 2 and Homefront may feature America being invaded by opposing countries, but Freedom Fighters did it first, and, frankly, it did it better. Featuring an alternate universe where Russia wins the Cold War and invades modern day America, Freedom Fighters actually makes you feel like a member of a resistance, liberating sections of New York City one at a time, all with some of the best squadmate control in gaming.Freedom Fighters ended on a cliffhanger, but we have still yet to see a sequel since the game's 2003 release. IO Interactive has said the game is on their "to-do" list, let's just hope it's fairly high up.

8. I Am Alive

Chicago torn apart

Set in Chicago during the aftermath of a massive earthquake, I Am Alive challenges players to simply survive. This can be accomplished in a multitude of ways, including searching for food and water, competing with other survivors for resources, and you can even bluff other survivors with an empty gun. Announced in 2008, we have yet to see so much as gameplay footage. Ubisoft has said that the game is still under way, but that they are "totally re-engineering development." We've got a long wait ahead of us.

7. Beyond Good & Evil 2

Pey'J the Giant Pig

Beyond Good & Evil was by far one of the best games of the last generation, and fans have been eagerly awaiting a sequel. Unfortunately, development for this game has been rocky. Beyond Good & Evil 2 was first announced in 2008, and all we have so far are a measly two trailers. Like I Am Alive , Ubisoft insists that the game is still in development, but fans' hopes were shaken when it was revealed this year that the team was taking a break from the title to work on Rayman Origins.

6. Final Fantasy VII Remake

Cloud Strife

This one is a long shot, I know, but bear with me. Ever since Square Enix's 2005 tech demo of the opening scene of Final Fantasy VII running on the PS3, fans have been begging for a full fledged remake. Unfortunately, Square Enix has repeatedly stated that they have no intentions of remaking the hugely successful title. Surely they must have thought about how much profit it would make them, and with Square Enix's financial woes as of late, it is possible they may reconsider their position.

5. Metroid Dread

Samus LED lights

Metroid Dread is something of a mystery, and may not even exist. Rumored back in 2005 to be a sidescroller for the Nintendo DS, little has  been said of Metroid Dread. Even series creater Yoshio Sakamoto has yet to give a straight answer on its status, other than it's in development. Outside of a mention of "Project Dread" in Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, amost nothing is known about this game. Could it end up being a 3DS title? Or will it release for Project Cafe?

4. Max Payne 3

Max Payne

Max Payne 3 is surely one of the most delayed games of recent times. First slated for a late 2009 release, the game has been pushed back to 2012, and its possible it won't even release then. The first game in the series to not be developed by Remedy Entertainment (developers of last year's Alan Wake), Max Payne 3  is instead being made by Rockstar Vancouver. While no one is sure as to why the game has been delayed so much, it's entirely possible that it's due to Rockstar Vancouver also allegedly working on Bully 2.

3. Agent

Agent

Rockstar's Agent (not to be confused with Sony's recently cancelled The Agency) has been in development since 2007, and...that's all we know. Being developed by Rockstar North of Grand Theft Auto fame, it can only be assumed that this PS3 exclusive will follow in the same free-roam vein that Red Dead Redemption and L.A. Noire have built upon. Unless there's some sort of surprise announcement at this year's E3, expect to wait awhile for this one.

2. Kingdom Hearts III

Kingdom Hearts

After years and years of annoying spin-off titles, it's about time that Kingdom Hearts III gets made. Creator Tetsuya Nomura has stated that development on Kingdom Hearts III has yet to begin due to being too busy working on Final Fantasy Versus XIII, yet he still has time to release come out with what seems to be at least two Kingdom Hearts spin-offs a year. Just give us Kingdom Hearts III already!

1. Half-Life 3

Gordon Freeman and Alex Vance

How could anything BUT Half-Life 3 make the top of this list? After stating that they are shying away from episodic content, it can be inferred that Valve is probably making Half-Life 3 as opposed to Half-Life 2: Episode Three, which is great. What's the hold-up? We understand that you want to take your time making the game, Valve, but at least give us an announcement or something. It's been a full seven years since Half-Life 2 and almost four since Episode Two, and the wait is almost unbearable. Get on it, Valve.

Where is Final Fantasy XIII Versus?

rf40928 (on 07 June 2011)

I know the (above) writer has a job to do.. but Geesh the game isnt even out yet and we're already looking for replacements ?! First, lets see if the game is a success or a flop before we know if we want to replace it. Secondly many games even if they aren't great ( as long as they are good ) should be loved by gamers for what they are - no matter what console you love - even if you have all three consoles - the point is.. fans don't replace games they enjoy a game for what it is.. and still play other games.. Maybe we need to get back to good thinking before we can have good writing.. How about an article that says "Games you'll love as much or more then Duke Nukem" ? I think Duke Nukem has one thing going for it that the writer has ignored.. It's a long awaited classic that has been anticipated for years.. it hasnt been out every year like COD or Halo.. so people are more curious.. and that alone will sell alot of copies even if it's ( possible ) not rated highly ( but it could be rated very highly ) ..either way .. i see its pre-orders are good.. Duke pre-orders arent anything special, but it'll still do well..

Project Dread has probably become Project Dead internally. Nice artwork though...

vashkey (on 07 June 2011)

Half the games on this list were never announced. The rest have either not been in development for very long or in the case of freedom fighters hasn't even been mention in years. It's safter to assume it's cancelled. Wheres Final Fantasy Versus XIII and Huxley.

Staude (on 06 June 2011)

You guys are missing Doom 4 :P good list anyways.

jlauro (on 06 June 2011)

Just face it, NOTHING can take the place of the duke... I'm surprised Diablo 3 isn't on this list.

Teratus (on 06 June 2011)

I've read quite a few articles about a FF7 remake I know that alot of peope who worked on the origional game are interested in remaking it problem is the team is scattered accross other titles right now and that the game woudlnt even be possible untill vrs 13 is finished although square state it has no plans for a remake we all know how greedy they are and given the ammount of negative energy dedicated at the Final fantasy series since 10/2 NOT making a FF7 remake would be a very stupid thing for them to do they know damn well that a FF7 remake would be a massive goldmine and they have staff who want to make it its only logical they do it at some point I just hope if its made then its a exsclusive like the origional I'd hate for a game that i have wanted for soo damn long to be held back by going multi platform screw multiplat

devilmaydance (on 06 June 2011)

Is it just me or does it look like Gordon Freeman is holding a sandwich in that picture?

NJ5 (on 06 June 2011)

Dungeon Keeper 3 was cancelled.

Hephaestos (on 06 June 2011)

wow i never even heard of metroid dread ^^ nice concept art though :p

Silver-Tiger (on 06 June 2011)

I'm missing Dungeon Keeper 3 on this list.

Baff (on 06 June 2011)

The #1 game on this list should be Grimoire. Its first announced release date was 1997. It has gotten about 10 new release dates since then. It is currently set to release this year as Cleve Blakemore works on the final final final final bugs... no really, its gonna happen this time! It has been 6 months from release for 15 years. It blows away everything on this list combined. The website splash screen still claims it will be released last year, which has been very typical for this game over the years. http://grimoiresystems.com.au/

allaboutthegames885 (on 06 June 2011)

Metroid Dread... Now that is a game I wish I could write just one little bit of monologue for... As a matter of fact, here's how I would go about it: RIDLEY: Samus Aran, you must be shaking in your boots right now... I don't blame you. For I am the spectre that haunts your nightmares. I am the phantom that curses your very soul. I am the very incarnation of all your worst fears. Ridley is dead! I AM... METROID DREAD!!!

KylieDog (on 06 June 2011)

A game should be announced before added to this list, fan moans for a requel/remake aren't the same as an announced game never releasing. Same with the games that were officially stated to be on hold/cancelled.

JaxxRaxor (on 06 June 2011)

@zarx I agree with you 100%. None of these games on this list can even compare to DNF in terms of the development hell it went through. The fact there some of these games on the list are unannounced (unlike DNF which was "announced" several times throughout the years) is pretty jarring.

AlkamistStar (on 06 June 2011)

Wow...this comment section is harsh! I agree with some games on this list - especially, "I Am Alive".

Vueguy (on 06 June 2011)

I just lol at those games that haven't even been announced or kept getting decline making the top 10 lol.

Gimgak (on 06 June 2011)

This is some pretty obvious vgchartz journalism alright.

Blood_Tears (on 06 June 2011)

@Kantor TLG was announced at E3 09, and it's now E3 11. So in your eyes, those 2 years are enough to make this list of competing games for DNF? Don't you think that's a lttle extreme, it hasn't been announced for 12 years like DNF...

NightDragon83 (on 06 June 2011)

How about Pikmin 3? How many years now has Miyamoto hinted that it's in development.... 3? 4? 5? Hell we've been waiting for some concrete info on Pikmin 3 for longer than half of the games on the list have even been in existence.

nanarchy (on 06 June 2011)

What a complete fail list, obviously someone that doesn't understand why the wait for DNF was such a long running joke. The whole point of Duke Nukem forever was that it was ANNOUNCED, constantly delayed or under redevelopment with intended release schedules missed year after year after year. What is the point of making lists of stuff that hasn't even been announced, let alone stuff that hasn't missed deadlines.

zarx (on 06 June 2011)

@Kantor yes that game would be a better candidate than anything on this list TBH as we have known it's in development and has had many vague release windows missed.

zarx (on 06 June 2011)

the whole point of Duke Nukem: forever was that it was in ACTIVE development for 12 years. They never stopped working on but whenever it was nearly finished they would switch to a new engine or delay it to re tool gameplay. Listing a bunch of games that haven't even been announced that work has started misses the point completely.

Kantor (on 06 June 2011)

The Last Guardian is really getting up there now.

NJ5 (on 06 June 2011)

If you find that, for half the titles on your list, you have to start reaching for titles which aren't even announced, it's probably time to abort the plans for the list.

mchaza (on 06 June 2011)

@Rath, have you played half life 2 episode 2. It ends on an cliff hanger building up an sequel were you go on the search for an secret powerful weapon made by aperture science. So its confirmed that they are either making the final game to cap off the series or valve are being complete assholes while they role around in there big steam piles of money. hopefully half life 3 is the final game in the series because once half life 3 is released it would be an good 20 years until half life 4 is released.

Rath (on 06 June 2011)

This is an awful list =/ why are unannounced games on this list (including the top two spots)? They are not in any way vaporware.

yo_john117 (on 07 June 2011)

Pretty much agree with that list..

gurglesletch (on 07 June 2011)

Diablo 3 should be number 1.
