Nikkei Confirms Wii 2 has a Touchscreen, Coming Mid 2012 - News

Details about Wii 2, from Nikkei which is a Japanese news publication have begun to trickle out. Nikkei has reliably leaked Nintendo information before E3 in previous years, so there is little reason to doubt the following details that they have provided.
According to their sources, Nintendo will release Wii 2 in mid-2012 (possibly after June if you play around with the timing translation) - which isn't too surprising as Nintendo had previously confirmed Wii 2 would not arrive by March 2012. "Mid-2012" could arguably be taken as April to September - so the release date timing is still a bit unclear.
Additionally, the device has been confirmed to feature a six-inch touch screen as part of the controller. The touch screen appears to have several purposes. It can be used for touch screen / tablet control of games on the Wii 2, it can be used as a portable game player, and in other cases the screen is simply not used at all. As has been widely rumored, the Wii 2 controller will also include a camera. The controller is said to include a rechargeable battery, presumably because touch, camera, and wireless functionality will combine to drain battery life quite quickly.

I'm for large screens, but I fear a 6" screen on a controller could make it too bulky.
If Sony is sensible with the PS4 it will cut all the gimmicks of Wii and Kinect and go for raw power (This time easily accesible by the programmers)

I am REALLY curious to how in the hell this will work. Ok so it has a camera, 6 inch touchscreen, wireless, (and possibly motion control)? This sounds more like a tablet than a controller for a gaming console.

I meant after June 21st 2012.
The Wii would have had a "net life" longer than the SNES, N64 and GC if the Wii 2 was to be released after July 1st 2012.
This just in: Nintendo is using NGPs as the controllers for their next console.
Have you considered that the touch screen is used for downloadable games, ala what you'd find on the app store and detaches from the controller?
Hell yea, let us use the screen as our game screen and take our console games on the go :)
As an old-school gamer and Wii fan, I think this sounds awful. I hope it's not true. I also hope Nintendo does not mistake the reaction of journalists at E3 for the reaction of the market, like they did with the 3DS.
This sounds horrible, I cannot fathom what the use of a 6 inch screen will be when you are supposed to be looking at the TV in front of you. Plus these controllers will have to be handled with real care unless you'd want to waste some big money replacing them. I'll wait for E3 and cross my fingers for an alternative controller.
Could be really expensive move.
Sounds liek a home console and a handheld in one, sreen in a controller is going to be interesting to see.

Lame, I was hoping they would make more of a GameCube successor instead of a Wii one... I think that well is about dry.

Ok, the portable game player part of it sounds cool...but won't this make each controller cost like $100 each? I hope they have a normal controller that is much cheaper.
