DICE: We've Already Made a Better Game Than Call of Duty - News
by VGChartz Staff , posted on 10 April 2011 / 18,741 ViewsDICE Producer Patrick Bach is known to trump his FPS franchise - as he should. It’s also well known he doesn’t think that much of the “competition.” By competition he means the Call of Duty franchise. He has alluded to it, but has not named the franchise exactly… until now.
"I think it's based on what we did with Bad Company 2 last year, actually,” Bach said.
In a recent interview, Gamerzines asked the Battlefield producer why he thinks this year’s Battlefield will “outclass” this year’s Call of Duty. Bach answered that it’s based on what DICE did with Battlefield: Bad Company 2.
"Asking the community and the reviewers which was the better game (between Bad Company 2 and Black Ops), we had the higher score," Bach said. "So we've already built a better game in theory, but I think it's just based on the trust everyone has in DICE and in us building Battlefield games in general."
Keep in mind that being a better game doesn’t necessarily mean it’s going to sell more. Bach wasn’t prepared to answer if he thinks winning over the critics will translate to CoD-like sales numbers.
"That's not up to me to talk about because I'm not the expert," Bach said.
Bach however countered with the logic that if you do make a better game, it should sell more.
"I'm the expert in building in games so I don't know. I think there are many factors that need to click to make that happen, but then again if you have the better product, why wouldn't you?"
Why wouldn’t you indeed. This year’s battle for FPS dominance is shaping up to be one of the most interesting ones in years. Which side would you rather be on – Call of Duty or Battlefield?

I tried both shooters. CoD is better on the sigle player campaign (MW2 aside which script was an horrible mashup), much more cinematic. Online for me there was no competition: BF wins hands down. Why? Well because in CoD you're just running and shooting. No reasons to choose between the classes, as the only one effective is the Assault one. It's not a matter whose squad has a better strategy, only the faster to kill and the little trick to be placed where other spawn.
I saw so many players killing others completely blindly because they knew where the other would respawn that it made me sick. Not to mention the uber power up the killng spree gives you. generally once a squad is behind it's hard to come back.
BF instead give you a much more freedom to play and act. You don't have to rush, pace is slower (except for one map), letting you think and organise yourself. A balanced squad can pull out different tactics that could turn around the match effectively. Classes are much more balanced and everyone is effective. Engineers have the edge over vehicles and are a little help with buldings, sniping is possible as the map are big enough, also the C4 or the mortar strike can kill people hidden inside buldings or take down a tank in a sigle blow, medics can cure and revive players giving them the possibility to stay more on the field, assaults player have the edge in close quater combat with the ability to use all kind of grenades.
There's several games better than CoD but that doesn't necessarily mean they will be as successful as the CoD series. I personally thought that KZ2 was one of the best FPSs this generation but as we all know it wasn't a blockbuster powerhouse like MW2 or Black Ops. At the end of the day, everything in the game industry is compared based on software sales and right now nothing comes remotely close to the CoD series.... nothing
I like COD games ok, but i Really like Bad Company 1 and 2 , they are actually hard to compare because even though they are both FPS they are so different with the way you play them
I've always wondered which is more beneficial. talking big and hoping to get other people interested vs the die hard fans hating you for talking trash about their favorite property, and boycotting you.
I always think it's best to prove yourself by making something so good that everyone will want to buy it, and you don't have to piss anyone off to do it. But I don't think DICE is capable of that. And thats why they talk trash.
Call of Duty has been lowering some quality aspects that made it good, so if they keep at it they're gonna lose.
Not that BC2 was that good... but oh well. If they improve, it could happen.
Ya, they made a better game that COD. Its called Battlefield 1942.
There are many shooters on the market that are better than the CoD-Games (for example: Goldeneye is much more fun than Black Ops). And there are better films than Saw 6, but nonetheless many people pay for Saw 6.
Each game has its own plus/minus features...I like COD for it its faster pace but I like Battlefield for its versatility (using vehicles)........The things I don't like are some of the COD maps are too small, you die you & you spawn right in front of an enemy, repeat cycle...which depending if you are shooter or target can be either good or bad........in Battlefield some of the maps are soo large you feel like you spend most of the time running around.............could you imagine what type of FPS we would have if the these 2 developers merged???
You used to be able to tell people about the coolest moments you had playing a game because the cool stuff happened naturally. Now everything beyond pulling the trigger is some canned blockbuster animation. These FPS are the worst culprit. "Oh dude i pulled my gun and just killed him in time it was sweet" "yeah thats how the game ends for everyone"
The average reviewer has a much broader taste in games than the average consumer. For whatever reason people like Call of Duty, it's not about the quality of the final product, which is good in both cases. it's about friends, hype and money. Halo started this FPS craze before halo it was just another genre. I sick and tired of mediocre FPS. Give me an adventure game any day of the week. Where are all my platformers? I look at my ps2 catalog and there are about 3 fps and about 15 platformers. Ps3 I have 10 FPS! Platformers? 2. I feel like the genres that made the ps2 so succesful are being sidelined to pump out these damn shooters.
Gah!
Battlefeild was a better GAME but CoD is more like a blockbuster movie. Medal of Honor was the best of the three but it reviewed poorly due to similarities with the other games.
Just thin of the movie avatar. word of mouth made it the biggest movie ever before it was ever released. It was an average film at best.
Wii fit is a better game than both, because it sold more.
@raidersfan8118
I think you are the world's biggest moron... If you think battlefield's online is garbage you must be living in the stone age. Battlefield is KNOWN for its online play and people BUY IT for its online play. Just because CoD is the best selling game frankly means lots of MORONS like U buy that garbage. Now stfu silly fanboy.
Now if they can get people to believe that, we can expect some big sales for Dice.
I've played the BF games and frankly CoD is just more fun. Both off and online.
Pretty different games, as much as these types of games can be. I personally like Battlefield better. I have and play both, but multiplayer at least, Battlefield is a more thoughtful game.
But Halo is better than both of them :) Much more variation, customability and smiles per frag.
All are good games, though.
Call of Duty is better than this hands down there is a reason COD is the best selling fps right now battlefield blows online it campaign might not be bad but online is garbage
snakefisher..... funny how you tell me I'm wrong while at the same time proving my point with your comment. I'd have to peg you as a COD fan. (what's with the Zeppelin pic, more than likely you have no idea and just think it's kool lookin' huh?)
@TheWon... the people saying Battlefield is the better game are more than likely the one's who 'have' said that with their money. While popularity is certianly a good indicator of something's quality, it's hard to use that as definitive proof. I get what your saying, but by that logic; Coke tastes better than Pepsi, McDonald's burgers taste better than Wendy's or Burger King's and George Lucas' Star Wars prequel flicks were nearly as good as the first three.
People vote with their wallets. That's how it goes. Sales DO mean something, and it isn't conformity.
It's funny how every says that Battlefield is the better game. Yet they don't say it with what really matters their dollars. When I see a Battlefield game sell more the 20 million copies. Then i'll crown it the better game. Sales doesn't mean value, but it does mean appeal! People seem to need Call of Duty more than they want Battlefield.
sevengen u silly fanboy, u have a bad logic
Bad Company 2 definitely IS a far superior game to any of the Call of Duty titles, in every regard. so much so, it's almost redundant to even bring it up, anymore.
Well, he didn't say anything overly bad. He thinks he made a batter game. And he is right, many people agree that Battlefield is a better series.
It just doesn't get the millions of dollars in advertising frankly.
I do not care which one sells better.
Fact of the matter is Battlefield 3 will be the far superior game.
Lobbng mouth grenades at the competition has never really worked. People love to argue and pick sides, so when a product's perceived faults are used as ammunition by it's competitors to hype their own product, all that really does is further splinter the potential customer base for that product.
Obviously there's people out there that love COD, personal opinions aside it's a phenomenal, AAA series, so when it starts getting bashed by the competition, that criticism only helps to turn COD owners love for that game into loyalty.
Now those players, interested in all they hype surrounding Battlefield and at the same time a little pissed some suit named Patrick Bach chose to diss COD, are going to approach the new Battlefield just looking for reasons not to buy it... so, on top of Dice already being in the hole to begin with as far as comparitive sales go versus COD, now they 've lost previously un-opinionated buyers who felt forced to pick sides. And did just that.
Myself, I'll take Battlefield hand down and if, for example, Treyarch had starting busting nonsense all over Bad Company 2, I would have never even bothered with Black Ops.
Prove it with the game Bach, not your mouth.
So did Guerrilla Games.
yeah but....theres loads of developer that have developed games that are better than call of duty. They just havnt sold as much because of the daft 20 million brainwashed gamers that think its the best thing in gaming.
@Gojimaster:
To be honest, I think the same thing. CoD type games will always have an audience because it's very easy to get into. Just learn the controls and you go play and kill someone. The killstreak rewards further simplifies things as well.
In saying that, do I think it's a better game? Honestly? No.
BF is much deeper but the core mechanics to play it well is very steep. But most, if not all the people I've played with who have tried playing BF loves it. To the point that they swear by it. Reason is I think it's balanced.
I would love to be proven wrong and have BF3 sells a ton more, but seeing as BC2 did what? More than 6million sold? That's not bad. Even if it doesn't outsell CoD this year, the fact that BF3 will most probably sell around 6-10 million units should take a large chunk out of that CoD market.
Squad-based multi-player games will never be as popular or sell as much as a series with a small learning curve like CoD.
CoD has several advantages that battle-field doesn't have: immediate accessibility for all levels of gamers, local and online split-screen (which is huge), co-op modes that are actually really fun to play (Nazi Zombies and Spec Ops), an amazing progression system (BF progression system sucks compared to CoD), a vast array of callsigns and emblems that become addictive to try to get, a much broader array of online game modes, far more customization options, and a whole lot more guns.
CoD is king for a reason. BF sounds like it will be good too, but it won't have the muscle to take down CoD.
yea rite u said that when medal of honor came out god that was terrible ...... black ops was way better .... dice isnt like they use to be im saying iit right now
Which side would i rather be on?
Halo.
@ Biddles
Im not sure that battlefield 3 will sell more than modern warfare 3, but there are millions of ppl that play bf so maybe you dont give a damn but plenty of ppl do care.
The more this guy continues to attack the call of duty franchise, the more exposure and spotlight battlefield will get which could translate into more sales. I dont really care for this guys attitude, but I can appreciate his conviction and desire to topple the giant that is cod. I am tired of 95 percent of my real world friends only playing call of duty, and while cod isnt necessarily a bad game, I just really want my friends to play something new and different. Battlefield 3 may finally be the game that can hold their attention for more than 2 weeks before sticking cod in their disc tray for a year. Heres to hoping.
call of duty has never been better then battlefield. notice the success of COD 4 comes in a period of time when there are no battlefield games out.
Well, I can only agree with him, even though he's not all that convincing. Bad Company 2 is one hell of an online shooter!
I'm not that interested in the single player of their games. Frankly, they should make sure that Battlefield 3's multiplayer is a true sequel to Battlefield 2. Don't try and muck with Call of Duty.
Sadly the best games always get overlooked because of cod. I dont see a way for ppl to ever get over this besides the game finally getting stale and over saturated (which it did for me 2 games ago). It just proves the radio theory, ppl will listen to the same corporate garbage handed to them over and over again until they can no longer stand it. I dont let ppl tell me what I like, I go out and find it myself.
Not really an accomplishment...
battlefield is miles ahead of call of duty
It really is sad how these guys are always desperately trying to low blow COD. Seriously, just make a good game and enjoy good sales, BF3 looks to be a great game but you just won't topple COD anytime soon, Battlefield's appeal just isn't as broad as COD's.
Just keep your mouth shut about the competition and show more footage of your game.
I like BF series, but I am not liking the hype they're generating. Did he just honestly use a Metacritic score to say that BF is a better franchise than COD? I like good games, but I hate stuck up developers.
I don't care if CoD sells more once again, as long as I can play Battlefield, I'm happy...
I like how this Dice thinks its genuine competition for Call of Duty when Battlefield 3 wont sell so much as a 1/4 of Modern warfare 3. Nobody gives a damn about Battlefield.
Christ, you got that right. Battlefield: BC2 was one of the best shooters last year.
Battlefield.
If you like the old cod engine, you do see that it can be run on a wii right?
