Treyarch on Frostbite 2 and The Call of Duty Engine
by Alex Co, posted on 16 March 2011 / 3,142 ViewsTreyarch Community Manager, Josh Olin recently had a video interview with Hip Hop Gamer. One of the questions asked about him was about Battlefield 3 – more specifically, Frostbite 2, the new tech-engine that DICE developed for Battlefield 3.
What does Olin think of his competitor’s tech? “It’s beautiful, it’s visually stunning” he remarked but he also expressed confidence in their own Call of Duty engine. Saying “Our engine is very lightweight, versatile; it’s got a long lineage. It’s something our team is really, really experienced with.” And the kicker: “we can update it to do those things.”
Having seen this, DICE and Battlefield Community Manager Daniel Matros tweeted this in response:
“Oh really? And wrestling is real, elvis is alive etc etc..?”
I think we can safely assume Matros does not believe in Olin’s way of thinking. This isn’t the first time Call of Duty and the Battlefield franchise have crossed paths.
Just a couple of weeks ago, DICE producer Patrick Bach hurled a few pot-shots at its competitors. Insinuating, but without naming the Call of Duty label as a “children’s game.” That’s not the end of it. DICE GM Karl Magnus-Troedsson also remarked that their competition is “getting lazy.” And they’re using “the same recipe for building a game.”
It looks like this fall’s battle for first-person shooter supremacy is really starting to heat up in more ways than one.
Battlefield 3 has been announced to be released later this year. While Activision has not revealed the newest Call of Duty, it’s safe to assume it will follow the usual Call of Duty fall release schedule.
So, what do you think shooter fans? Can the Call of Duty engine really do what Frostbite 2 does with just a few tweaks or is it time they invested in newer tech before the brand and engine get old?
