SOE's 'Free Realms' Coming to PlayStation 3 in March
by Kenneth Hubble, posted on 13 March 2011 / 1,858 ViewsSony Online Entertainment's free-to-play MMO Free Realms is coming to the PlayStation 3 via the PlayStation Network. As of March 29 2011, the family friendly game will be available in North America, making it the first free-to-play MMO on a console.
Free Realms launched in 2009 for the PC and 2010 for MAC and has since built up a community of nearly 17 million registered players on both platforms combined. Although it does advertise itself as a free-to-play game, players can access and pay for premium content.
The game prides itself on being child friendly, having been recognised by Creative Child Magazine with the 2010 Creative Toy Award Seal of Excellence. The already robust parental controls on the PS3 ensure that this game can be fun and shared with members of the whole family. You are encouraged to do whatever you want in the game's world, whether it's fight monsters as a ninja or race go-karts.
Part of the press release states that "Free Realms for the PlayStation 3 features the familiar activities, minigames and adventures found in the PC version. There is a streamlined user interface that capitalizes on all the interactive features the console has to offer and is easily accessible from the PlayStation Store."
The press release in full is a big one, and a lot of it details are more in-depth explanations of Free Realms features and the past successes of Sony Online Entertainment.
