Awkward Moments in Gaming: The Vashyron Dance! (Slightly NSFW)

by Stephen Kelley, posted on 11 March 2011 / 2,564 Views

I recently began playing an RPG for the PS3 (it’s also available on the X-box 360) called Resonance of Fate. The game is fairly serious at times, and yet it never really strays too far from its core audience – dudes that like anime. In saying this, one notices pretty quickly that some of the humor in the game is pretty over the top, especially scenes featuring the aristocratic “cardinals” and their many quests that they place the player’s party in. At the point of the game I am at, you have a handful of these hedonistic rich folks including: a shy nerdy cardinal who ogles at Leanne (one of the party members), a creepy artistic cardinal who collects evil blood stained marionettes covered with chainsaws then places them in a garden, and finally a cardinal that is so into the food she eats that she literally gets off on it.

This scene in particular happened to be one of a few scenes that my wife walked past as I was playing the game, and let me tell you - it was the definition of awkward. To set the scene, we find our party members called urgently to the aid of Cardinal Barberella. Being a group of adventuring “hunters” that get paid for doing odd-jobs and killing stuff, a job from a cardinal is not something to pass up. When the job in question turns out to be frivolous, it takes Vashyron about three seconds for his mind to wind up in the gutter:

Almost finished this game and love it! Definitely some over the top characters though.

God, I love that game.

I thought it was pretty funny. Probably would be a little less awkward with original Japenese voice overs.

@spdk1 Resonance of fate is a standard JRPG with lots of SRPG elements affair. I've completeed it and got 900GS (just got the last battle arena achievment left - don't want to spend 7 hours beating each level 10 times, 3 is enough. I assure you I'm well aware who it's targeted at. This is just quirky eastern humour. Sure that looked like a weird moment to me to but to put this in the anime boat is absurd. Ah well each to their own but just seemed inaccurate to me as it's the first time I've ever heard anyone make such a remark let alone make the remark as if it's common knowledge or fact.

Yes I remember! This was REALLY weird...

Where did she get muscles to move her boobs around? o.O Truly everything about this game is asstarded.

Raisins? Grapes? Who cares? They're both sweet. BTW, that sounded like the dude that played Guts in the English Berserk anime. But then a lot of voice actors sound like that.

@ buglebum bollox to your bollox Maybe in the East it wasn't marketed directly to them perse, as these kind of games are sort of a part of their culture, much like manga that everyone reads and such. Over here - Otaku are the ones to play this stuff, its a VERY niche market. Especially with goofy antics like the above. When you advertise games in anime magazines and on sites like Anime News Network, its a sure bet that you are targeting that demographic.
