Gears Franchise Can Move On After Gears of War 3
by Alex Co, posted on 10 March 2011 / 2,392 ViewsGears of War 3 is supposed to be the end of the trilogy, the end of Marcus Fenix’s saga, but that doesn’t mean it's the end of the Gears of War franchise as a whole.
Epic President Mike Capps, speaking to IndustryGamers at GDC remarked that “Epic definitely has plenty of ideas for more in the Gears universe” Whether it be a prequel, a direct sequel to Gears of War 3 or a new story altogether remains to be seen.
"It's a really good question. If no one buys Gears 3 [laughs] I'll tell you what the future is right now. I'm hoping it'll be the biggest entertainment launch this year, but it might not be. So it is definitely a trilogy and the story is a trilogy; I think people will get that experience when they reach the end. I don't want gamers to feel cheated. At the same time, I've worked on the comics, we've got the novels... there's a ton of stories in this universe. There's certainly more space to tell a different story if we wanted to," Capps said.
Don’t expect another Gears of War game anytime soon after Gears of War 3 however as Capps also stated “We don't have an exact plan for 'here's what we're doing next' but I think we'll wait and see and maybe give folks a little rest for a while."
Given that the first two games amassed sales of over 12 million units total, I’d expect it’s a safe bet we’ll see more Gears games after Gears of War 3. Putting the Gears of War franchise on the PS3 isn’t something Epic’s opposed to either.
