Gears Franchise Can Move On After Gears of War 3

Gears of War 3 is supposed to be the end of the trilogy, the end of Marcus Fenix’s saga, but that doesn’t mean it's the end of the Gears of War franchise as a whole.

Epic President Mike Capps, speaking to IndustryGamers at GDC remarked that “Epic definitely has plenty of ideas for more in the Gears universe” Whether it be a prequel, a direct sequel to Gears of War 3 or a new story altogether remains to be seen.

"It's a really good question. If no one buys Gears 3 [laughs] I'll tell you what the future is right now. I'm hoping it'll be the biggest entertainment launch this year, but it might not be. So it is definitely a trilogy and the story is a trilogy; I think people will get that experience when they reach the end. I don't want gamers to feel cheated. At the same time, I've worked on the comics, we've got the novels... there's a ton of stories in this universe. There's certainly more space to tell a different story if we wanted to," Capps said.

Don’t expect another Gears of War game anytime soon after Gears of War 3 however as Capps also stated “We don't have an exact plan for 'here's what we're doing next' but I think we'll wait and see and maybe give folks a little rest for a while."

Given that the first two games amassed sales of over 12 million units total, I’d expect it’s a safe bet we’ll see more Gears games after Gears of War 3.  Putting the Gears of War franchise on the PS3 isn’t something Epic’s opposed to either.

I don't think I like one game that EPIC has come out with. These games are no different. The style of their games are all the same. If PS3 gets them so be it, but I doubt a ton of people care either way. Tons more better games on the PS3 already.

They are working on a cross-platform Kinect/Move game that allows you to fulfill all of your wildest Little Cliffy fantasies. Includes anal play!

Epic has said time and time again that they love their "relationship" with Microsoft. My guess is that they would only port future GoW games to Sony consoles if MS stopped greasing their wheels. That doesn't seem likely.

Whatever they do, I doubt it'll come out this gen. Unless it's a Kinect game ...

If it's a 360 title, I'm guessing prequel. If it's a next gen title, I'm guessing now story. Can't wait for Gears 3 regardless.

@badgenome: Oops. My bad. Corrected the post. Thanks! :) And yes. It's units. Not $ =)

@badgenome He meant 12 millions copies sold which is about right. The first one is at 6.13 and the second is at 6.16.

BadF***ingButters (on 10 March 2011)

Badgenome I thought that he was talking about game sales not how much money the games made. Though I could be wrong.

Move on to the PS3, maybe? And I think Gears of War 1 & 2 made a LOT more than $12 million combined.
