Kinect's Launch Numbers in Japan Detailed

by Gabriel Franco, posted on 26 November 2010 / 4,519 Views

In Japan Kinect hit retail on Saturday, and according to Media Create's weekly software sales report, the motion sensor sold 26,000 in Japan during its first two days. At launch the device had two SKU available, the standalone version and the bundle with 4GB and 250GB Xbox 360 model. Both versions include Kinect Adventures.

Kinect's launch games didn't sell all that well, the best selling title title was DanceEvolution that sold 6,000 units and was the 24th place in Media Create's top 50; the next Kinect game in the chart was Kinect Sports that made it to the 45th spot in the sales chart. Other games like Crossboard 7, New Brain Training and Sonic Free Riders did not make it into the top 50.

Compared to Move, Media Create reports that Kinect's first week hardware sales were about half that of Move, which itself didn't have great sales either.

Vzcharts is such a failed website. Instead of posting their numbers they are using somebodyelse hard work and posting on their website

Vueguy (on 26 November 2010)

lots of Japanese family don't have the room for Kinect that's why it doesn't sell really good in Japan.

damndl0ser (on 26 November 2010)

I expected fewer than that, so good going Kinect! I have a feeling that if the word of mouth is good, we will see a steady increase in sales overall in Xeno land.

bannedagain (on 26 November 2010)

I would have to agree that it is going to come down to word of mouth. Coming weeks will tell us what to expect. end of december.

justinian (on 26 November 2010)

That's far more than I thought to be honest. I wonder what the kinect ad campaign there is like. Anyone knows?

gergroy (on 26 November 2010)

I don't know about you, but I'm pretty sure there are 3 skus with kinect. 1 standalone, 2 4 gig bundle, 3 250 gig bundle.... hmmmm, yep, 3 skus :)

Rawnchie14 (on 26 November 2010)

Hardware vs software tells me that the Japanese are ready for games in the future, but are not impressed with the games that's presented initially.

kain_kusanagi (on 26 November 2010)

Let's look at this in a different way. There are 5.8m PS3s in Japan and only 1.4m Xbox 360s. Japan has pretty much snubbed what is an extremely popular gaming console in the rest of the world. Now, with that said, Kinect sold 26,000 units with an installed base of 1.4m Xbox 360s just in the first two days. If the number of Xbox 360s in Japan was the same as PS3s, that is to say their install base was equal, there would be 5.8 Xbox 360s. If that was so, one could estimate that Kinect would have sold 107,714 units in two days. Of course that's just by doing the math and not accounting for market trends. Does anyone know how well Move sold in Japan in it's first few days? I couldn't find the data. A google search only came up with an estimate of 6,349 units in a week in Japan at http://www.gamestooge.com/2010/10/30/move-sales-soft-in-japan/ but I have no way of confirming that number. Basically my point is, Kinect is doing very well in a xenophobic land that has yet to realize the Xbox 360 is a legitimate gaming platform worth their attention while the rest of the world enjoys it. Kinect may help that.

Raze (on 26 November 2010)

Considering the general lack of demand for XB360, Id say thats not too shabby for 2 days. That's a Kinect for every 360 sold in Japan in the past 2 months, roughly.

Lazthelost (on 26 November 2010)

You all do realize that on average the Xbox 360 sells 2000-4000 consoles per week. The fact that they sold 26,000 Kinects in 2 days is incredible!

MontanaHatchet (on 26 November 2010)

26,000 is awful by any stretch of the imagination. Sure, it's the 360 (in Japan), but that excuse just won't cut it when 360 games can debut over 100,000 copies in the country.

Silver-Tiger (on 26 November 2010)

26.000 units. Great for Xbox 360 in Japan. Barely worth mentioning for the whole world.

Kaufer (on 26 November 2010)

@uso They give console and software sales not addons. Its probably the last time m-create will mention Move or Kinect numbers.

hagelt18 (on 26 November 2010)

I'm still convinced the kinect is the key to microsoft's success in japan. You see, H-Games are pretty popular in Japan...what better platform than the xbox360 with kinect? Hahaha ;]

uso (on 26 November 2010)

why there is no reference to Kinect on the mediacreate numbers?

welshbloke (on 26 November 2010)

Promising numbers for the Kinect standalone a good blip for the console but if the 360 is to chip away in the region the Kinect has to shift steadily more units of the consoles. It will either succeed word of mouth or disappoint to be honest.

Reasonable (on 26 November 2010)

Well, that's that then... probably. Kinect isn't going to fuel a 360 revival in Japan by the looks of it. Relative to the 360 itself it made a bit of a difference, but the problem is that relative to everything else it's not enough in the region.

heruamon (on 26 November 2010)

26,000 is not too bad a number, imho. I’m a bit surprised that the titles didn’t move in-line with the units sold, but chances are that as people try the bundled title, they will check out other titles to see how they play out. This is actually on the high side of what I thought Kinect would do…30,000 units, tops!

Kaufer (on 26 November 2010)

Also don't forget part of that 500 million spent on marketing. And was promoted by SKE48 members and celebrity wrestlers at and before launch. I wouldn't be surprised if the Kinect promos in Japan cost more than the Move promos worldwide.

Hyruken (on 26 November 2010)

Half that of Move with only a fraction of the install base don't forget....

Pavolink (on 26 November 2010)

So, even with Kinect 360 continues low at Japan. Nothing new. At least sells well on America and EMEAA.

elvacano80 (on 26 November 2010)

im not suprised at all, its japan and xbox
