2010 Year on Year Sales and Market Share Update to August 21st

by Seb Parker, posted on 27 August 2010 / 5,089 Views

Here we see data representing the global sales through to consumers, and change in sales performance, of the three home consoles over comparable periods for 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010.  Also shown is the market share for each of the consoles over the same periods.

"Year to date" sales for 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010 sales are shown in series at the top of the table and then just below a comparison of 2010 versus 2008 and 2010 versus 2009 is displayed.  This provides an easy-to-view summary of all the data.

The Wii experienced a 12k drop this week, mainly due to the boost from the Japanese holiday Obon wearing off. However, this week's Wii sales are the lowest it's posted in its 4 year existence. I said last week that I didn't expect sales to fall far from the 150k mark, but given how notoriously slow September is without any intervention, Wii sales could drop to around 135k, though I would be surprised if they dropped any lower.

Wii:  DOWN year on year this week by 42k or 23% and DOWN year on year - year to date by -2.84%.

The PS3 saw the smallest drop this week, thanks to A.C.E in Japan offsetting the Obon holiday there. This marks the last week the PS3 will be up YOY, meaning the PS3 YOY growth will peak at a massive 46.55%. Next week should see a small decline, then a significant drop YOY the following week.

PS3:  UP year on year this week by 56k or 65% and UP year on year - year to date by 46.55%.

The X360 dropped this week around the same percentage as the Wii. Arcade S in various regions within EMEAA offset the natural decline there. With Reach a mere 4 weeks away (in terms of weekly updates) X360 shouldn't fall much lower than 170.

360:  UP year on year this week by 81k or 78% and UP year on year - year to date by 20.72%

Wii "Legacy" deals? PS3 clearence doesn't seem to be doing much, have they started yet?

Seece (on 28 August 2010)

@ postoffice - X360 had it's elite price cut last week of August, and Pro models got a cut.

Seece (on 28 August 2010)

@ siphillis - sorry not quite sure what you mean, the PS3 next week should settle around 140k, same week last year it was above 150k. So it'll be done this week. Move is releasing 2nd week of September AFAIK, and won't life HW anyway.

Seece (on 28 August 2010)

Thanks for your imput trestres, it's going to remain that way it is right now though.

Seece (on 28 August 2010)

@ trestres - as you can see from 2007, it ends on the 31st. I can't pick and chose which weeks are most relevent, they need to be consistant.

Seece (on 28 August 2010)

I just checked out both Halo 3 and ODST launch weeks, for ODST, PS3 and Wii sales fell 10% wow, and for Halo 3, Wii fell 3% and PS3 rose 18%, but I'm pretty sure that FIFA releasing the same week in Europe was the factor of that. So I don't really buy people going into stores buying reach will have any impact on Wii/PS3 HW other than them lowering. Also Metroid isn't going to sustain HW sales, given how much it's going to sell over September, NCG I can't see having any effect on HW either tbh.

"June / Sept tend to be good months for everything in the USA hw wise - students / parents tend to go on big shopping sprees when everybody finishes up the year / returns to school. " That may be the case for America, I havn't looked at past years. But I know from last year September got even more stale for the Wii. From around this week last year, to end of September last year, Wii sales declined 46k. I really wouldn't say June - September is strong anywhere, actually seems the weakest IMO! As for people buying Halo: Reach and picking up a PS3 or Wii in the process? ...

I think the same thing!!!....for me the great winner was sony with ps3,and they will continue to be in the future....i expect a good increase with games like GT5,little big planet 2 in November...We will be here to see!!! [[]]

It seems like PS3 has sold enough to keep up YoY through the rest of the year.

@seece you said: I just checked out both Halo 3 and ODST launch weeks, for ODST, PS3 and Wii sales fell 10% wow, and for Halo 3, Wii fell 3% and PS3 rose 18%, but I'm pretty sure that FIFA releasing the same week in Europe was the factor of that. thist time when reach releases the move will also release so i dont think that the ps3 sales will fall.

*Reposting because of embarrassingly bad grammar in my other comment. I wish we could edit news comments* I don't recall which ones but some retailers are selling the old Wii SKU with just the Wii and Wii Sports for $150. Don't know why they're calling it the 'Legacy' system though. I don't know when they actually started clearance pricing them but there are some crazy good deals going on for the PS3 right now. Tuesday in Best Buy they were selling the 250 gigs with 2 games, an HDMI cable, and an extra controller for just $360.

postofficebuddy (on 28 August 2010)

And then of course there's the Move launch, which even if it doesn't produce a much of a lift in Americas will likely have a relatively dramatic impact in EU since it essentially amounts to a 70 euro price drop on the high end models. And probably at least a moderate boost in Japan.

postofficebuddy (on 28 August 2010)

Yeah but that's exactly what's happening with the Wii and PS3 right now with the Wii 'Legacy' deals and PS3's clearance on older models.

postofficebuddy (on 28 August 2010)

Wii's decline last year in September was basically because of people not wanting to pick it up right before it got a price cut. Traditionally sales increase in September. Just look at 360 last September: Average of about 140k/week, up from about 115k/week in August.

trestres (on 28 August 2010)

@Seece: np, maybe for next year :P

siphillis (on 28 August 2010)

@seece ps3 releases the move the same week ps3 should be up this week

trestres (on 28 August 2010)

@Seece, well, you can't be consistent after a certain time. Each year has 365 days or 366 (every 4 years). As you can see, 365 is not a multiple of 7, there's 1 day remaining or 2 if it's a leap year. This means that every 4 years there will be a 5 or 6 day displacement (almost a week) that you will have to take into consideration, meaning there will be a year which will have 1 more week of data than the rest. I'd suggest to you to give the conflictive week to the year with most days in it, and that will be the year with 1 more week of data. Sooner or later it will have to be done.

TheSource (on 28 August 2010)

I don't know that September will be that bad for Wii. Metroid: Other M, New Carnival Games are coming - should both at least stabilize Wii. June / Sept tend to be good months for everything in the USA hw wise - students / parents tend to go on big shopping sprees when everybody finishes up the year / returns to school. Halo should also put several million people in game stores - even if only 10% of those extra people buy a system besides X360 you'd expect across the board lifts. Regardless, October is stacked on the sw side for Wii in the USA / West: NBA Jam, Wii Party, Def Jam Rapstar, GH, Kirby, DJ Hero 2, Just Dance 2, Rockband 3, Tony Hawk, WWE, Deca Sports 3, Force Unleashed 2. That is alot of mainstream / core / and some casual content.

trestres (on 27 August 2010)

I don't think you should be including the 27th Dec week, it's 5 days from 2009 and only 2 days from 2010.
