Americas Preorders Chart, 3rd Apr 2010

by Brett Walton, posted on 06 April 2010 / 6,347 Views

Leading the way this week are Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Conviction, Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Halo: Reach. Conviction has now passed 240,000 total pre-orders with two weeks to go to release. Final pre-orders should come in at just under 300,000 units leading to a week one of around 400,000 - 450,000 units.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 saw large increases this week due to the $20 incentives tied to pre-ordering the game at Walmart and Amazon along with continued increases at all other retailers. With nearly 150,000 pre-orders at 8 weeks to release, week one sales should be comfortably clear of 500,000 units. Halo: Reach hits nearly 80,000 pre-orders with 24 weeks to go until release - it is hard to even try to predict at this stage where final pre-orders will end up but we expect an opening larger than Halo 3's 2.85 million from 2007.

Monster Hunter Tri continues to do well - expected week one sales of well over 100,000 would make the title the most succesful Monster Hunter in the west to date.

looking better in America this time around*

huaxiong90 (on 11 April 2010)

Erm...no. That would be because it was well advertised. Plain and simple. And apparently word of mouth is helping it. This whole "people should just own 1 console and support it" is wrong. I, as a gamer, own all consoles. Why? Because each platform has exclusives I would like to play, so I support all of them. I support gaming. Now you're complaining about GT5 nearly beating Halo without a release date while Alan Wake is down there. There is a difference: Gran Turismo is huge. Easily comparable with Halo. It's a monster in Europe, and things are looking in America this time around due to the NASCAR licensing. Alan Wake is a new IP. And it's not the most mainstream out there. Trust me, when the review embargo is lifted, watch how the advertising will shoot up and how pre-orders will skyrocket. It's not because of no devotion to their console. Not at all. Let's not forget in the US the 360 has a much stronger tie ratio than the PS3.

reggin_bolas (on 08 April 2010)

Yes because Sony fanboys are very principled and devoted to their console. They are also more intellectual and can appreciate games that typically sell less well en masse because of their unique aestethics.

huaxiong90 (on 08 April 2010)

Support your console of choice, no problem. But respect the competition.

huaxiong90 (on 08 April 2010)

And regin_bolas: Heavy Rain is selling very well for a game of its genre. Cut the crap, you don't know what you're talking about.

huaxiong90 (on 08 April 2010)

In fact, IMHO, the GT: Academy time trial physics engine alone assures me GT's development time won't go to waste.

huaxiong90 (on 08 April 2010)

@LyrikalStylez: Um, no it's not the reason GT5 was delayed. In fact, GT5 was only delayed in Japan. I'll be laughing at the amount of crow being served when it releases.

CChaos (on 07 April 2010)

I love how, when people mention 360 and PS3 sales, they seem to forget that the 360 is a full year older. I would be pretty damn surprised if the PS3 wasn't outselling the 360 by this point. That's the way economics kind of works, really. 360 is older...ergo, it's now selling less. Personally, I think more people should be mercenary gamers. Get all the consoles, then you get access to all the games. This insane devotion to one console is why half the gaming community are able to be described as zealots or psychotic.

Haste262 (on 07 April 2010)

Lyrikalstylez, yes ive heard of forza3, infact i have it.

yo_john117 (on 07 April 2010)

Halo: Reach should overtake Madden 11 next week for the 3rd spot....game is such a beast.

Tridrakious (on 07 April 2010)

GT 5 continues to see nice increases week after week. Without any release date other than "this year". Amazing.

RiksK15 (on 07 April 2010)

My guess is that Halo Reach won't even beat Halo 3... But look at that GT5 not even a release date and so f-ing high!

Lyrikalstylez (on 07 April 2010)

Haste, Have you ever heard of Forza3??? It is the King of Driving Sims at the moment, Which is why GT is delayed yet again lol Halo:Reach is Gonna Be Huge and Im anticipating ALAN WAKE yet might not pre-order perhaps till the last minute....So hopefully theres many that will do the same!! THE GAME NEEDS TO SELL PEOPLE

Haste262 (on 07 April 2010)

That 'utter crap' is better than anything the 360 is ever likely to have, in that genre.

reggin_bolas (on 07 April 2010)

Yes of course we are consumers. However, owning both a PS3 and 360 is redundant and lavish. You only need one HD-era console so pick one and be a good owner and support your fucking console of choice. Any normal working adult owns only 1 of the 2. PS3 fanboys have recovered from the first 2 humiliating years and they're back in full swing given the preorders for utter crap like GT. Heavy Rain didn't turn out to be revolutionary after all so here is our big chance with Alan Wake. Less pretension, just a great horror game. Come on, show some love for it.

Metallicube (on 07 April 2010)

I am proud to say I am one of those 62,000 preorders for Monster Hunter Tri. I just couldn't say no to a $65 deal for the game bundled with the classic controller pro and $10 cash back on amazon.

Packie (on 07 April 2010)

@reggin_bolas You do realise that Alan Wake plays a whole lot differently than Heavy Rain judging from previews, so why the comparison? and while I agree that it has indeed amazing graphics, how do you know it has a "great" story, have you played it? OT: SMG 2, Halo Reach and Splinter Cell are kicking ass once again. :D Come on Alan Wake, you can reach the top 10.

Rawnchie14 (on 07 April 2010)

@ reggin_bolas Why should anyone show devotion to anything? They're games/consoles for God's sake! We're consumers, not apostles.

reggin_bolas (on 07 April 2010)

Please explain to me why no one is pre-ordering Alan Wake. It's an exclusive counterpart to Heavy Rain with a great story and some amazing looking graphics. Anyone with an IQ higher than 100 and an attention span lasting longer than 5 fucking minutes should appreciate this title. Why is GT5 so strong? The damn thing is practically vaporware after all those date changes. It just shows that PS3 fanboys are more devoted than us 360 owners. This is a fucking car game for crying outloud and it's almost beating Halo? Please, this is why the PS3 is outselling the 360 worldwide. No devotion anymore.

Chrizum (on 07 April 2010)

MH3 pre-orders are starting to disappoint me. They increased with almost 9.000 a week a couple of weeks ago, but they are dropping each week... Normally, the rate increases as the launch nears by.

WarmachineX (on 07 April 2010)

awesome, go Mr. Fisher!

Siko1989 (on 07 April 2010)

super street fighter 4 is selling like crap.. i think its because the preorder bonus is garbage or people don't want to play Street fighter 4 again lol

Ping_ii (on 07 April 2010)

owwwie!!! lots of 360 fanboys to qoute here about GT5 sales, thats it keep those comming wanna serve as much crow as possible.

hudsoniscool (on 07 April 2010)

look at the attach rate of halo games. halo 2 has like a 33% to the xbox and halo 3 has like a 28% to 360. Gran turismo games have less then 10% attach rates on average. so if ps3 finishes with 70 million consoles sold GT5 should sell about 7 million copies.

Arfen (on 07 April 2010)

Will SMG2 surpass week one of the SMG1?

Seece (on 07 April 2010)

@ arogod "@Seece The Halo series is still small compared to the GT series, ever main GT game sold between 11-15 mil per iteration, while only Halo 3 managed over 10 mil. Even though NA is not GTs strongest region, that game will be massive." One word - AMERICA. No GT game in last 8 years has come close to Halo 3. If you read the topic or my post you would realise this is not about WW figures.

iHuGi (on 07 April 2010)

Halo Reach is SET to Destroy Modern Warfare 2 on Xbox 360 ! Halo is a monster baby! I Expect 5 milions 1st Week... MW2 did almost that. For what i think Xbox 360 should be on 42 Milions when Reach Drops.

fastyxx (on 07 April 2010)

ODST sold 2.7 million worldwide in the first two weeks. You figure a core Halo game is going to have 3 million people that will buy it no matter what. If the beta catches fire and the hype is up, it's going to be insane how many that game sells.

moondeep (on 07 April 2010)

Wow, 2 Wii games in the top 5?

huaxiong90 (on 07 April 2010)

Oh yeah, and the deal on SMG2 really helped spark the pre-order numbers. I know for a fact the game will post great numbers anyways when it releases.

huaxiong90 (on 07 April 2010)

I don't think Gran Turismo was available for pre-order in 2007. Also, it never had a release date. OT: Good numbers for Splinter Cell. Reach is a monster. Good numbers for Monster Hunter Tri. Can't wait to see the boost when GT5 gets a release date as well as some good ads regarding the NASCAR aspect of the game. Red Dead Redemption looking good. Interesting to see Skate 3 chart. Alan Wake is looking decent. ModNation Racers looking decent also.

BoneArk (on 07 April 2010)

Great numbers for Super Mario Galaxy 2. :-) I wonder if Monster Hunter Tri can reach 90k before launch. ;-) Low numbers for Super Street Fighter IV. :-(

Wandamaximoff (on 07 April 2010)

OMG REACH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

FaRmLaNd (on 07 April 2010)

Its simple. Jet packs. Hell I was pumped for reach before I knew anything about it but with jetpacks? Now I'm hyper hyped. Not starcraft 2 hyped but close enough.

geddesmond2 (on 07 April 2010)

@ Chaos Gran Turismo 5 prologue has sold over 1 million in digital sales and 3.64 million retail. I think Gran Turismo 5 will do a lot more than that.

palitococo (on 07 April 2010)

What happen with Lost Planet 2 and Alan Wake? Lost Planet 2 specially its too low.

CChaos (on 07 April 2010)

If Gran Turismo 5 actually manages to break 4.63m, then I'll be quite impressed. Why? Because as of right now, the top PS3 exclusive has sold that much (MGS4) and no one else has come particularly close to taking the crown there. Not yet, at least. Closest so far was 3.68m with Resistance: Fall of Man. Should prove interesting to see what, if anything, can dethrone Snake.

gustave154 (on 07 April 2010)

damn wheres the ads for splinter cell???? 0.0 preorders are picking up in america for splinter cell. nice jump for halo : reach lol.

Falcon204 (on 07 April 2010)

The Halo series is every bit as big as the GT series. Halo 3 has sold 10 million copies with only 39 million x360's. Thats an attach rate no GT game can claim.

jedi5diah (on 07 April 2010)

x360 numbers can never be accurate...itz literally 1 for all n all for 1

donsterydo2 (on 07 April 2010)

If it comes down to Reach - if the preorders would stay at the same level till the end it would have about 550k, but we know they would increase closer to final date - IT WILL BE HUGE :p

edjevink (on 07 April 2010)

@Seece: You do know that at this rate Halo: Reach will double GT5's preorder number in 2 weeks, right? In a week or 5 it will probably already be 3 times as high as GT5's preorder number.

D-Joe (on 07 April 2010)

@aragod wat,only GT3 more than 11m(and beat Halo3)

edjevink (on 07 April 2010)

Why are so many people surprised by the Halo: Reach bump? Everyone knows it'll be a beast and will do a few million week one.

donsterydo2 (on 07 April 2010)

Alan Wake go up dammit :-)

Zucas (on 07 April 2010)

Oh wow that is a brutal jump in preorders for Galaxy 2. Game is going to do well over 500k first week in America. For reference, New Super Mario Bros. Wii only had 104k with 8 weeks left til launch. Not the holiday season, but maybe a similar first week in America. Conviction continues to move along smoothly. Maybe a 500k opener for the title which would be simply amazing. Halo: Reach also gliding along rather smoothly. Going to continue to do a nice pace until early May where it'll explode in reserves after the demo goes live and gets public attention. How much will this game do first week? Hard to say now but I think we can easily expect over a 2 million first week with numbers like this already. Other titles moving up are Red Dead, MH Tri, and Madden. Madden will probably do similar to last year. Red Dead: Redemption might turn out to be one of those surprise big hits of this year. Although a big title, might be able to put up some more sales than we would have firs thtought. Then Monster Hunter Tri over here is just getting great reception thanks to Ninty advertising and demo. Over 100k seems emminent and possibly higher than 150k. Great for the series.

aragod (on 07 April 2010)

@Seece The Halo series is still small compared to the GT series, ever main GT game sold between 11-15 mil per iteration, while only Halo 3 managed over 10 mil. Even though NA is not GTs strongest region, that game will be massive. On topic, decent SC numbers, I'm myself getting the PC version and am quiete interested in how the game plays out to be.

libellule (on 07 April 2010)

average SC nbr amazing reach nbr spartan117 I agree with you except that GT never had a release date

NightDragon83 (on 07 April 2010)

Who the hell pre-orders Madden this early? Seriously... football is more than 4 months away, and baseball has barely friggin started! Next thing you know, stores like LameStop will be offering pre-orders for Madden '12 the day Madden '11 comes out, with an extra 25% trade bonus if you trade in your freshly bought and still sealed copy of Madden '11 right there on the spot!

Seece (on 07 April 2010)

Why have Reach preorders shot up this week? (I'm confused, it still doesn't have a release date) Also ... I honestly don't buy how GT can be anywhere near Halo Reach in pre orders, it's not as if you can say it's because the PS3 has been having better sales in america lately, so people put a pre order down, and considering Halo 3 doubled what any GT game has done in the last 8 years (In America) and that Reach will do better, it's hard to believe they're so close! Yeah .. I'm sure there's a simple explanantion like a promotion or something, some light shed would be nice though!

z101 (on 07 April 2010)

Wow at Mario Galaxy 2 & MH3. Great numbers. Halo Reach numbers are good, but one must not forgot that a big part of the xbox360 user order online. Most Wii users buy their games "offline" (and often weeks after release).

fighter (on 07 April 2010)

It seems like the Halo tsunami is building up already ^^ And some people are already getting drowned (cough, Makaha, cough)

Makaha (on 07 April 2010)

Halo Reach is a stupid prequel!!! why make a stupid prequel?? why not a sequel?? Prequels suck because you already know what's going to happen in the timeline and so I won't be getting Halo Reach where is Fable 3?? that's the only 360 game I'm looking forward to And where is the next Twisted Metal? that's what I want, come on Sony, bring out the next Twisted Metal!! and the next Syphon Filter!!

spartan117 (on 07 April 2010)

Reach's jump is pretty impressive. If it does like that what will it even do after the beta? Gran Tourismo preorder sales aren't special at all. 1. It HAD a release date 2. People preorder it since like 07 xD 3. It's Gran Tourismo

restored_lost (on 07 April 2010)

yea people are already pre ordering halo reach after just watching that trailer lol, expect odst to see a bumb in may as well for sales.

sabestar (on 06 April 2010)

I never expected Reach to be bigger than Halo 3. I mean wow. Red Dead redemption needs bigger numbers but we'll see, 7 weeks to go. I'm happy to see GTA Episodes in the charts, seems that there PS3 fans who want them even after all the cursing lol. I wish to see big numbers for Metroid as well. It looks like it deserves them

Pavolink (on 06 April 2010)

Great numbers for MHtri, and SMG2 looks great! Metroid Other M, doing well. I hope for a boost on preorders on future weeks.

guiduc (on 06 April 2010)

WOW at SMG2 Very great for Monster Hunter 3. Who said a core game can't sell on the Wii?

BenVTrigger (on 06 April 2010)

Halo Reach is scary massive. Expect a new record folks for first week sales on the 360.

coolbeans (on 06 April 2010)

I agree, Mack. It's certainly good in comparison to it's previous iterations, will be interesting to see if it's the best selling SC game.

MonstaMack (on 06 April 2010)

Again don't know why everyone is not impressed by SC. It looks like it should easily do 500k+ It's first week. That's pretty good.

fastyxx (on 06 April 2010)

I still think Reach has a chance to do 5 million WW week one/13-14 million total if the beta wows people. We shall see May 3. If the beta comes off as same old Halo multiplayer, it does about 3.5 million week one/10-11 million total.

coolbeans (on 06 April 2010)

Wow at SMG2, would be cool to see how many pre-orders pan out for it the following weeks.

enrageorange (on 06 April 2010)

and i honestly belief that the game will sell a decent amount over 10mil. Doesn't mean ether of us is right although your reasoning does make no sense. What other reasons would a sequal have a bigger release lol, unless the previous game was viewed as bad by the MAJORITY of people and the next seemed to be good. Ether way expect at least 10million lifetime. Its a true updated halo whether you like it or not doesn't matter because a very large amount of xbox owners will pick it up sooner or later, mainly sooner.

Baalzamon (on 06 April 2010)

ok, the only reason halo reach will have a bigger release is because there are millions more consoles out there. Given the same number of consoles, I honestly think it would have about the same or even a worse opening than the previous halo titles. Don't expect lifetime to hit 10 million.

u2ez4me2 (on 06 April 2010)

Hooray for Monster Hunter 3 :D

ElGranCabeza (on 06 April 2010)

That's what happens when you adverstise something Capcom. :)

alfredofroylan (on 06 April 2010)

@homer People with blind faith. They believe that this year game will be different.

homer (on 06 April 2010)

Who preorders Madden?

themanwithnoname (on 06 April 2010)

I'm still waiting for someone to show me definitive proof of a Halo: Reach release date, because afaik Microsoft hasn't said a word about it.

Ping_ii (on 06 April 2010)

WTF am I reading this right? Alan wake will release earlier than Mod nation racer?, I thought Mod nation was comming out in April as well......

SlipperyMooseCakes (on 06 April 2010)

Halo: Reach is going to be a beast. It has 24 weeks until launch and it is at #4. After the beta comes out I'm sure the preoders will sky rocket even more.

Nintendogamer (on 06 April 2010)

That $20 pre-order binus and the fact that SMg2 was 1st in the charts on amazon.com, shows what nice treat brings.

psrock (on 06 April 2010)

Very happy to see MH3 getting up there. Madden already pretty high GT5, yeah amazing modnation will move up.

SaviorX (on 06 April 2010)

I have been waiting to see these all week! MH3 stays steady, & WTF at Galaxy 2 numbers?!?!?!

A_C_E (on 06 April 2010)

I live in Canada and have had my GT5 pre-order for about 2.5 - 3 years now. Halo is going to be a monster seller at this rate, this is huge.

SleepWaking (on 06 April 2010)

@ CGI-Quality Hmm I thought you would be able to, at least at Amazon and some big retailers. I've had it pre-ordered for over 2 years now and this is Europe were talking about where pre-ordering isn't as widely present or important.

Nintendogamer (on 06 April 2010)

Metroid other me to have massive boost too towards the release date.

Nintendogamer (on 06 April 2010)

pre-order numbers should go up quite a bit in the last 2 weeks of MH3 release, and over 100K is likely.

CGI-Quality (on 06 April 2010)

@ SleepWalking GT5 just went up for pre-order late last year, at least @ GameStop.

sonicshuffle (on 06 April 2010)

Halo Reach is going to sell like hotcakes.

hunter_alien (on 06 April 2010)

Im not that impressed by SC... ah well, I guess all the delays affected it. RDR is doing great already having ~115k preorders, it should do well ;-) Maybe if it does good enough numbers we will see a Gun 2 :-D Monster Hunter 3 will have a great opening, and in the longrun Metroid Other M is looking good to ( thank god).

Soriku (on 06 April 2010)

MH3 is doing really well, also WTF at SMG2's preorder jump.

PolleyInYourPocket (on 06 April 2010)

GT5 hasnt even got a release date n its got nearly 62k pre-orders? thats gonna b sick numbers popping up when its date is released.....

SleepWaking (on 06 April 2010)

@ Lightning_24 It's not that insane, you have been able to pre-order GT5 for years now.

CGI-Quality (on 06 April 2010)

Splinter Cell is going to do better than I thought! ModNation & ALAN WAKE will probably have similar opening numbers. Yeah, Halo: Reach is a monster, as is Gran Turismo 5 with no release date in sight and sitting @ #6.

Lightning_24 (on 06 April 2010)

you know what's insane, GT5 doesn't have a release date and it's close to Halo Reach.

Boutros (on 06 April 2010)

Good news all around. Modnation Racers is kind of low though. I'm seeing ads on many gaming websites.

qmoney88 (on 06 April 2010)

wtf, halo reach jumped 19k? 24 weeks to release? that is just insane. Splinter cell got a nice jump as well, smg 2 is gonna be huge.
