Father Stabbed by Son for Offering FIFA 09 Advice

by VGChartz Staff, posted on 25 January 2010 / 6,346 Views

FIFA 09 screenshotThe latest video game-related violent act isn't centering around a violent game at all, but around EA's E-rated FIFA 09.

An Italian man referred to only as "Fabrizio R." had bought his son the game a few days ago as a birthday present.  After offering his son some pointers on the game, an argument broke out, leading the father to turn off his son's television in response to his behavior.

The 16-year-old son - Mario - then went to the kitchen, retrieved a knife, and returned to stab his father in the neck.  He then calmly walked back to the kitchen and rinsed off the knife in the sink, right in front of his mother.  She had no idea what happened until the father came in, clutching his bleeding throat.

The mother's statement to Italian daily newspaper Il Corriere della Sera:

"I saw Mario come back into the room, he seemed calm, he went to the sink and I noticed him washing a knife.  Then my husband came into the room with a hand round his neck, dripping blood."

After the attack, Mario returned to his room until police arrived.  His arrest was without incident, and the father is currently in stable condition at a local hospital.

The kicker: the parents bought Mario FIFA 09 because they didn't want him playing so many violent video games.  Maybe they should have weaned him off GTA a few years earlier...

@Olpus Bonzo: well actually we can say that idiots are everywhere, but fortunately we don't have anyone like Jack Thompson. Italian parents usually fear the Internet, but not video games. Not as much as Facebook and other social networks, I mean.

Dear Mario, Please try fitting in some forgotten sewer tube and die, slowly. Many thanks in advance.

Aion (on 26 January 2010)

Such a sad story.

chapset (on 26 January 2010)

Dad: ''Mario you suck, stop playing and go kill yourself'' Son:''...'' Dad:''what!!! they scored a goal on you again, Josephine why did you give me that dumbass of a son'' Josephine:''hahahahaha, I told you we should've got an abortion'' Son while stabbing dad in neck : ''I told you I wanted just dance, not this piece of crap''

AngelFire18 (on 26 January 2010)

G4 said he slit the guys throat.... hmmm i need to talk to them...

Olpus Bonzo (on 26 January 2010)

In reality, sometimes in Italy there are newsmagazines that attacks blindly Internet and videogames (or the new technologies in general) just to bring up the attention of the old bigot people (that thinks that the youths are going to live in a corrupted future) and sell more copies. P.S.: I didn't find any italian source saying that the name of the boy is really Mario (for irony, the same as the famous video game character). Indeed, "Mario" is becoming an uncommon name even in Italy, in favor of "Marco".

MaxArt (on 26 January 2010)

This actually proves that the boy was mentally ill all along, and games have nothing to do with the accident. Or better, the boy used to play "violent" games because he's violent, not vice versa. Anyway, here in Italy people are not so crazy about the "educative message" of video games. We usually think that kid did that because he had issues, not because he played GTA or anything else. I hope his parents now believe this too.

EL_PATRAS (on 26 January 2010)

hooliganism even in the virtual realm. tsk...tsk

homer (on 26 January 2010)

What advice could the dad have given him to make him that mad?

ruff_romeo (on 26 January 2010)

what???!!! Kids these days, whats wrong with them!!!

darthdevidem01 (on 26 January 2010)

OH MY GOD! how horrible for the parents!

Onyxmeth (on 26 January 2010)

To think this could have all been avoided if the kid was given an updated game as a present. Come on pops! FIFA 10 is out already!

*Sound Of Rain (on 26 January 2010)

I don't know what to say... Um... Ok?

Mr. sickVisionz (on 26 January 2010)

They sound like some super *hitty parents who raised a psychopath. In a way this is reaping what they sowed.

ps3-sales! (on 26 January 2010)

This is stupid. They don't even specify what console it was on.

Stan85 (on 26 January 2010)

This prooves that GTA 4 or Fifa, doesn`t matter,it`s all about the people. Games don`t kill people, people kill people.

NinjaV (on 26 January 2010)

@Hepheastos "The kid won't get anything... sounds like a 1 kid familly, the parents will revert to, "I tripped on the knife" to avoid jail for him... At least that is what I would do... why send your own kids to jail?" Because the kid might stab you again why would you defend something like that put him in jail and leave him there.

Ajescent (on 26 January 2010)

Fail to everyone here crapping on football fans, you guys complain about people who make general sweeps at gaming fans yet here you are making sweeps at another group...

richardhutnik (on 26 January 2010)

Quick, we need that disbarred lawyer to say that football causes kids to do criminal acts and go gangsta! If he protests the game, he will leave Take Two alone, to run GTA into the ground of their own accord, as they have been doing.

zuvuyeay (on 26 January 2010)

wow, nice son, whatever happened to just answering back, but the headline should be more like dad turns of TV,thats why he was stabbed not for offering advice, journalists eh! still better ban everything and leave the priest in charge,no wait, actually!

Hephaestos (on 26 January 2010)

jdelanoy (on 26 January 2010)

Great. More material for the "ZOMG VIDEO GAMES ARE FROM THE DEVIL" crowd... :/

blunty51 (on 26 January 2010)

Well what a thing. No less than 10 years in a mental home, please.

maximus22 (on 26 January 2010)

Itza mee, Mario!

Hephaestos (on 26 January 2010)

This is the perfect examples of what is wrong with videogames. The kid stabbed his father and was incapable of delivering a fatal blow!!! I mean come on what can you miss in the throat! But we all have the answer, violent games need: motion control! like this kids will learn the proper movements to do a real life fatality. Thank god the ARC is comming out soon. OK so the kid is crazy... the advice was probably "don't play more than 5 minutes then go do your homework", or "don't use Lazio they suck so hard it's laughable", both "pointers" that could lead to an argument.

burning_phoneix (on 26 January 2010)

He should have bought FIFA10 instead.

Kenoid (on 26 January 2010)

Wow?

Flippozzo (on 26 January 2010)

Hi all. I'm italian (and sorry for my english =p).. that boy is crazy, not normal. The videogames do not matter... he had problems with his father before this tragedy..

fukudalakasone (on 26 January 2010)

Mamma Mia!

haxxiy (on 26 January 2010)

I guess Mario prefer hint blocks. On a serious note, I'm glad to see the guy survived.

Dv8thwonder (on 26 January 2010)

Mario a killa you next time!

AquariusCold (on 26 January 2010)

He should have showed his Dad some mercy. Instead he went for the jugular! There is no honor in the at house.

Boneitis (on 26 January 2010)

I thought stuff like that only happended at actual Soccer games.

Jumpin (on 26 January 2010)

You don't get into the Mafia by committing violent acts against family members. Ever see Goodfellas or Casino?

binary solo (on 26 January 2010)

Ban all video games. They obviously all lead to heightened emotional states that can cause immature minds to crack and commit unseemly acts, regardless of content. Even Eyepet will frustrate and lead the young'uns to lash out. Parents are just not safe any more while there are video games in the house. Wii Fit is the only software suitable for anyone to use from now on.

Miss piggy (on 26 January 2010)

But from where did it come to him the idea of stabbing someone to "revenge" himself ?Sure not from Fifa 2009 ! Too much TV... This Mario is already a social problem !

The Ghost of RubangB (on 26 January 2010)

I agree with NicholasCage, just like I do in every situation in real life. And -jayderu's right too. This is football violence, not game violence. The parents didn't realize that football kills more people than video games. People die playing the game, people die watching the game. It's madness. Anyway, glad to hear the guy's in a stable condition. Dayuuuumn.

NicholasCage (on 26 January 2010)

That's fucking messed up. The parents bought the kid the game for him to have fun and he repays them back by stabbing the dad in the neck? The kid seriously needs to be trailed as an adult. How can you do that to your own parent... they waste so much money on you just for you to have a good life. Seriously, the dad was just giving the kid advice...

.jayderyu (on 26 January 2010)

This is about football not video games. This is a game where people have bet their wives and died at stadiums. http://www.encyclopedia.com/doc/1P2-8025989.html

RJ@Melb (on 26 January 2010)

Jeez..

REDZONE (on 26 January 2010)

i always thought luigi was the violent one

Ajescent (on 26 January 2010)

Why is this is the Sony section...? It should be in general, surely?

Burning Typhoon (on 26 January 2010)

Maybe Mario should have been playing Wii?

Signalstar (on 26 January 2010)

A couple of things: 1) They bought him FIFA 09? Not 10? What a crappy present. 2) No one likes a backseat gamer. 3) It's a me Mario!

luvtospooge (on 26 January 2010)

They should put him in some sort of sport to release his anger on. This is just, plain sad.

blaydcor (on 25 January 2010)

Overall story: Tragic, disgusting. Fact that the kid's name was Mario: Hello inappropriate chuckling.

That's what happens when you play EA games.
