The Japan Preview: 2/8 Edition (Big drop)

Summary:

After the brief surge in software sales last week, the software market has returned to its typical levels of volume. Next week should remain quiet before an upsurge in sales again at the end of February. As is usually the case in Japan, DS and PSP software accounted for more sales than console game sales in the preliminary data. DS and PSP together had twelve of the top twenty titles in the preliminary data.

Trends to Watch:

- The preorders for the Final Fantasy VII Advent PS3 bundle are rising rapidly. With Dragon Quest IX releasing in the same period hardware sales should be quite robust for April.

- Console sales over the next two weeks are crucial as PS3 could outsell Wii later in February and early March for a few weeks if it doesn’t fall off dramatically this week and the following week. Street Fighter 4 which should debut at 50,000 will have a large say in this.

- DS and Wii are slowing becoming more third party centric as Nintendo gives other companies an opportunity with a break in its release list.

Understanding the Japanese Preview:

Rather than saying x game for y platform sold between 20,000 and 28,000 units as in the past, the preliminary data will be broken down into charts by platform. Within these charts, there will two additional categories besides the rounded sales figure under ‘sales’. On the left will be ‘low end’ depicting the lowest amount the title likely sold for the week, while to the right will be ‘high end’ depicting the highest amount the title likely sold for the week. As always, this data is preliminary, and therefore, not final, but it is based on a sample. The varying platform market share the sample represents is why consistent sellers like Wii Fit do not always appear in the preliminary data. Sales for this report are for the week ending February 8, 2009

Software by Software Platform:

Wii Software – Three Wii games charted in the preliminary data. Taiko no Tatsujin sold another 21,000 units as the top selling Wii game of the week. Mario Tennis managed to sell another 13,000 units, and it now looks like the game has a shot at 200,000 units in Japan. In third place was Turbulent Haruhi with an additional 5,000 units sold. Expect Wii hardware sales to remain in the 20,000 to 30,000 unit range.

MontanaHatchet (on 09 February 2009)

Well then, "one" would be wrong. The top 3 titles for the PSP are higher than the top 3 titles for the DS, but its sales are less. Know what I've noticed? The top 3 PS3 games are all new launches, while the Wii games have each been out for several weeks! Shocking! The Wii sells tons without any games coming out, and it's not like the PS3 just released any heavy hitters (the software numbers prove that alone). The teens are actually pretty damn good. If the PS3 is still in the teens when Street Fighter IV or Yakuza 3 launch, then maybe I'll agree with you,

outlawauron (on 09 February 2009)

@ Malachi Mario and Sonic is a first party game in Japan. Nintendo published it.

Malachi (on 09 February 2009)

WTH is going with the Taiko game? It's going to be the fifth week where it is around 20k sold, it's on its way to beat DQ Sword with only M&S to beat for third party sale. Is Namco doing a promotion or is it going the way of Rhythm Heaven Gold on the DS?

outlawauron (on 09 February 2009)

@ Simulacrum Street Fighter IV is about it.

Simulacrum (on 09 February 2009)

So what we have next week?

Rei (on 09 February 2009)

Looks like Dissidia wont be making it to a million after all.

sebnod (on 09 February 2009)

Nice Demon's Souls (out of stock). Yakuza2 tells that yakuza 3 on PS3 will be a earthquake in Japan.

bardicverse (on 09 February 2009)

Montana - When the numbers of the top 3 titles are higher than the Wii, one would expect those numbers to be higher, as the Wii numbers are less impressive hardware wise. Is the raw demand for the Wii still that high, even with it being well over a month since anything of note coming to the system? The PS3 has had a lot more noteworthy titles this past holiday season. I'd expect more than the teens from that.

Vanadium2k8 (on 09 February 2009)

Go Taiko!

alvarito (on 09 February 2009)

where is FFCC for wii?

MontanaHatchet (on 09 February 2009)

Bardicverse, *sigh*. Demon's Soul, Midnight Club, and Shaun White aren't exactly the type of games to push hardware.

badgenome (on 09 February 2009)

"Expect Xbox 360 hardware sakes to remain in the 4,500 to 7,500 range this week." What does hardware sake taste like? Different from regular sake?

Noobie (on 09 February 2009)

Demon Soul, is not going to go into 6 figure... its next to impossible to do more than double the first week sale.. and first week always have only 3 day sales... until or unless it is really impressive, which i highly doubt.

Globox (on 09 February 2009)

"Tremble it won't drop that much. Remeber this is only 3 days sale. Game was released 5th Feb. There was shortage. I think it is going to have strong second week.

Tremble (on 09 February 2009)

@Globox: 100k is not guarranted. The game could drop at around 15k next week and finish its life at 70-75K.

bardicverse (on 09 February 2009)

For all the software, its surprising that the PS3 still sells only in the teens. No one should be happy with those numbers. Its not a good sign for things yet to come.

Globox (on 09 February 2009)

Now we can say that DSouls will sell at least 100k life time in Japan, if not more, like close to 150k

Tremble (on 09 February 2009)

The PS3 can sell SW, that's a good sign. Even Demon's souls did good, I thought it would bomb. Should be a great year for the PS3. PSP is a beast, could THE console/handheld of 2009.

outlawauron (on 09 February 2009)

that's the one.

@ stats Which version is that of? There is the one that came with a soundtrack (which had a much high average) and another that was sold standalone.

Where is Trace Memory R?

@ stats Very impressive. It seems to be much better than I thought.
