Sony\'s PS3 Passes 20m Units Worldwide: How Well Is It Really Doing?

As of January 31, 2009 Sony’s PS3 console has seen its sales to gamers reach 20.07m units . It took the PS3 98 weeks in Europe, 115 weeks in the Americas, 117 weeks in Japan, and up to 116 weeks in Other markets (Other markets have seen multiple small launches worldwide) for the PS3 to break through the 20m units barrier. Over 90% of all PS3s are sold in the first three major regions though.

Approximately 1.42m PS3s have been sold in markets outside the big three regions depicted above, hence the star. Dividing regional totals by weeks of availability in that region shows that Europe is the best region for PS3. The Americas, with most of sales coming from the USA and Canada, is almost exactly three times bigger in population than Japan, and weekly averages and totals follow this exactly, as the 70,000 weekly average in the Americas is just shy of three times the weekly average of Japan sales. In Europe, the PS3 is over 15% stronger than it is in the Americas, with weekly sales of over 82,000 units.

Here is how other videogame machines have done in the same number of week as PS3, to offer some context on the performance of PS3.

The Wii is starred because it has not been out for 117 weeks in Japan, as the other platforms have been, which means the console has sold at least 40.024m units in the time frame PS3 has been available in the big three regions. In Europe, PS3 launched in March. The PS2 launched in Europe during November. With PS3 just going through its second Christmas bounce in Europe, it has closed to within 10% of the PS2 pace in Europe. Historically, PS3 has yet to fall more than 30% off the PS2 pace in any week in Europe, and most weeks are about 15-20% in favor of PS2. But with premium pricing compared to the PS2, Europe is clearly the best region for PS3 sales. It is also the region where Sony has its biggest lead on Microsoft through the same number of weeks from launch – 5.7m. Even in Japan, through 117 weeks the PS3 lead on Xbox 360 is only about 2.3m. So even though Japanese gamers prefer PS3 to Xbox 360 by a larger margin – 5:1, than Europeans do – 24:10, Europe is where the PS3 had outsold the 360 the most in a comparable time frame.

In the Americas, Xbox 360 outsold PS3 over the 115 week period from launch by about a third. PS2 had sold more than twice as many units in the same number of weeks, and Wii managed nearly three times as many units. DS and PSP are also ahead from their respective launches to respective 115th weeks. The Americas situation is ultimately quite similar to Europe, with the major differences being that Europe prefers PS3 to 360, while the Americas prefer 360 to PS3. PSP also sold less than PS3 in Europe in the same number of weeks that PS3 had been out.

In Japan, PS3 is well off the pace of PSP, PS2, Wii and DS over the same period. Through 117 weeks, PS2 has sold over three times as many units as the PS3 in Japan. This is a steeper drop than in any world region, and rather fascinating since the PS2 to PS3 price increase in Japan was never as sharp as in the USA or Europe, the ongoing weakness of Xbox 360 in Japan, and the slowing sales pace of Wii in Japan. In the same number of weeks across the three world regions, PS2 saw 25% of its sales from Japan, PS3 sees 15%. With the ongoing strength of the Yen against weakening western currencies Sony should be doing everything in its power to push the number of PS3s sold in Japan without dropping the price.

Nonetheless, despite a massive resurgence in Nintendo’s power over the last several years, the PS3 has managed to outsell the Xbox 360, its primary competitor, through the 98/115/117 week threshold it took to reach 20m. Microsoft’s strength through this time frame remained mostly in the USA and UK, allowing Sony to offset a deficit in the Americas (2.8m off the 360 pace) with a ~6.9m surplus in Japan and Europe.

In weeks after this in Europe and Japan, where Microsoft’s console has seen an upswing in sales due to price cuts, it will be interesting to see if the Sony pace advantage through comparable time frames will hold up.

Playsation2 is the best console of all time by far, sold the best, had the best online game was awesome in its day. PS3 started slow but this article shows its sales haven't been as far low as people have been led to believe, only tracking 10% less than PS2 and selling better than 360 in the same time line aint half bad.

scorptile... does a fiat has a steering well, a gear swift ad four wells? doesn't a Ferrari have ones too ??? its same thing... just the power and the price its different... but its in the same demographic then the Ferrari... very bright of you to make sense like that... its a real breakthrough your line of thought ...

intro94 (on 11 February 2009)

the ps3 is surviving thats all to it.Every single year some fanboys based on their magical orbs say it will break through(like the gamecube?or xbox?) ,and it never really happens, and it gets harder every year.let it be.

kazu.jp (on 11 February 2009)

grats. go ps3!

Seece (on 11 February 2009)

I can't believe some of the stupid posts I have read in this artical .. "Will the Wii be selling in 9 years time like the PS3?" Just shut up for your own sake.

sergiodaly (on 10 February 2009)

miiguel you have read a book... ain't you a bright boy... have you ever believe in every thing you read? if so i think you should read the bible ... much more insightful information to use on the daily bases... cell was a breakthrough in console processors... never ever anybody said otherwise... you all are very jumpy because... in 2008 the best 4 games for the critics were 2 PS3 exclusives and the other 2 where PS360 games. if i see it like me... PS360 (real next gen consoles) much more expensive and still beats the wii (not real next gen) that is much cheaper... and it will be like this until this gen dies...

Go Sony, and thanks for what we got till now!

scorptile (on 10 February 2009)

my favorite quote by a sony fanboy "the wii doesnt count cause it is being marketed to a different demographic then the ps3 and xbox360" i made a post about this. does the wii, ps3 and xbox360 play video games?? does the three have game controllers?? does the three play games like madden, call of duty, and a few others?? if you said yes to any of these then they are in teh same market. thanks and have a nice day

alera (on 09 February 2009)

I love the replacement 360 argument despite the fact I am still on a launch console so are most of my friends AND what do you think they just throw the faulty returns after in 3 year warranty in the bin ? What a load of rubbish think about what you are saying = refurbished / repaired units used as replacements etc. Loads of the faulty ones end up on ebay canabalised and repaired etc. We are talking shipped units here not repaired returned units etc. Is this how desperate it has got ? How low will biased sony supporterrs actually sink ? Also 8 million / 40% market lead thats nothing is it ? I cant take people seriously when they come out with comments like that.

TheSource (on 09 February 2009)

Would you like to give us an idea of what constitutes a real gamer? It always reminds me of the argument Europeans used to make that Africans weren't real people

bamf (on 09 February 2009)

I don't know why sales are compared anymore between 360 and PS3? The Wii should defiantly not be included as they don't compete with the same target audience. Include the Wii than we should include the PC, which sells around 100 mill a yr. Comparing Wii sales with the other 2 is like comparing motor cars to motor bike sales. If we could somehow filter out the acual gamers who own the Wii and you'll see very small sale figures. With PS3 how many are sold just for blu-ray movie playback, do we include PS3 in the film media market and compare it to other Blu-ray player sales? So many people have bought their 3rd even 4th 360 due to their previous ones getting the RROD, how many of the 28 mill sales are actually 360 owners.? less than 20 mill? There have been many articles recently saying how poorly the PS3 is doing, they say this just because its behind the other 2. The editors obviously don't look at numbers and see how well for its high price it is doing for a short time period. If 20 mill is bad, then 28 mill is only a tiny bit better. Nintendo are very happy to make huge profits by selling 40 mill units to none gamers, they're not botherd if no one plays it as long as everyone keeps buying it. With all their profits they should spend some to make some real epic games for all the bored, still for some reason die hard fans out there. Instead of making party after party, kiddie after kiddie games for all the none gamers who don't buy games. I'm aware ther are some good 3r party games like call of duty world at war, but all these game are much better on the other consoles.

alera (on 09 February 2009)

The title of this article is "PS3 Passes 20m Units Worldwide: How Well Is It Really Doing?" It then goes on to try and show the ps3 is actually doing Ok based on sales vs 360. However Sony have been completely dominant in the VG market for the last 2 generations. Complete dominantion of the market. They are now firmly in third place. So Sony are now happy to be last in the market place ? From an unbiased point of view this article should be saying they are doing very badly 1st - last is hardly a good result for a company that completely relies on the profits from the gaming division. At this point the 360 has an 8 million (or 40%) lead. But more importantly it continues to comfortably outsell the ps3 week on week world wide by between 20 - 30% including the last crucial christmas sales period. So actually as bad as things currently they are they continue to get worse. THis is very important and I dont see this mentioned anywhere in this article. The only hope for Sony now is that they can "Out last" the competetion. But the wii and the 360 are much cheaper to make and have far bigger installed bases so I cant see this happening. Plenty of price cuts to come from them if needed. Even if Sony could afford big price cuts (which they cant) Nintendo and Ms would just respond if there sales started to drop. At this point Sony have lost the States. The big markets in Europe are pretty much gone as well if things continue as they are at the moment. That will just leave them with second place in Japan, despite all the fuss this market has little overall effect on worldwide sales (Less than 10% overall)

johnlucas (on 09 February 2009)

What people miss in this assessment is that the XBox 360 sells like hot chocolate to a man on fire in Japan. It has absolutely no representation there while Sony while not being on top sells at least a little of something everywhere. This should actually worry not only Sony but Microsoft too. The North American market is their strongest & they're not #1 there either. And THIS is the year when they find out the truth of the so-called Wii60 alliance. But the PS3 is being bested by a virtual mirror of themselves in the 360. The 360 is competitive with the market leader in a few territories while the PS3 isn't much competitive in none. Elsewhere the PS3 at least bests the 360 & that's where the earlier reach to a global 20 million came from. It's too late in the game at this point in context. There will be a few boosts due to the upcoming Street Fighter IV, Resident Evil 5, & the yearly EA Sports offerings but the 360 will get the upper hand on the PS3 in each instance. It's permanent 3rd place for these guys & unfortunately they don't have the money to subsidize a platform if need be like Microsoft is doing. PS2 & PSP (in Japan) is probably where that profit boost (someone earlier talked about) comes from along with some of Sony's other business sectors. I'll just tell ya, it's gonna be a long year for the PS3. John Lucas

Azelover.. very good deductions there. I don't ever hear about Momentum being mentioned here as a factor but it's obvious that it's very important..

Daddo Splat (on 08 February 2009)

well sony hopes MS and Nintendo dont rush out a new console with better specs. I think in this economy this gen of console's will be the longest lasting shelf life possibly 6 years plus. I mean the wii's been out over 2 years with out a price drop and I dont see it dropping soon. Nintendo will sell it at the price tell demand slows and it hasnt. imagine a console going 5 years without a price drop????? That would be improbable but whoda thunk it would this well??? the 360 could sell for $150.00 in 2 years and the Wii is still $250.00 LOL thats funny. and it would still probably out sell the PS3 and 360. I Mean does a $299.99 PS3 outsell the Wii head to head ????

gow220 (on 08 February 2009)

good sony

Azelover (on 08 February 2009)

@ MikeB "Nevertheless despite its slow start the original Playstation sold over 100 million units. I just wanted to put things into perspective." First market entrant for one, but let me just tell you it was totally different. One thing I very much agree with that Iwata said after his experience with the Gamecube, is that the home console market is momentum based. The kind of momentum he was able to create with the Wii has nothing to do with specific gaming audiences, but the public at large. The Wii became a cultural phenomenon, and that phenomenon is its momentum. It was fueled by Mario Kart Wii and specially Wii Fit, but it is still so large that those hits could probably have been delayed comfortably. Next in line is Wii Sports Resort, taking something that already made huge waves of excitement(Wii Sports) and attempting to create more excitement for families who will not be able to travel during summer time. Much like Wii fit it's a big thrust, but momentum generally speaking tends to snowball regardless, and that's why it's important. What momentum does the PS3 have? Look, I saw the PS1. I was there when they said "299" at the first E3 in early 1995, I was there when they crushed Sega and embarassed Nintendo by snatching Square and Enix, garnering most of the third party support. The momentum was HUGE, and it was positive. Everyone knew in their intimate selves, that this console was gonna be it. Even if logic had any points at all against it, and there were, for instance it was a tech company attempting to enter the market right after others tried and failed(Panasonic, Phillips etc). But you could still feel the tide was going in the direction of the PS1 very strongly. Of course, if you're an analyst and you only think in very logical terms, there are things like brand loyalty to take into consideration which would give you a slightly different viewpoint, and that is important but only to an extent. The MOST important thing IS the momentum. You can't, you absolutely cannot compare the PS3 with the PS1 regarding market momentum, one is in a bleeding resistent downswing, and the other was on a total upswing. A lot of people seem to have this notion the PS3 will increase popularity with time, but I see no evidence of that. I think the PS3's sales so far have resonated mostly from short term strengths. For instance brand loyalty and being a competitively priced Blu Ray player, the latter advantage is already rapidly fading away and the former, history has shown that without momentum brand loyalty will not go very far. With all products that lack momentum but carry popular brands, they usually sell moderately well in the beginning but then sales slow down. Besides it's losing a lot of game power, either former exclusives or otherwise, whenever that starts to happen it means a derail to the momentum, and it eventually snowballs. Contrast that to the PS1, which was gaining more and more support from all kinds of third party companies you could imagine ALL THE WAY THROUGH its lifetime. Then consider the current economic situation, it is mostly undeniable the fact that because of the strong yen and Sony's hardware decisions, that a price advantage will likely never be built against competitors. The market is not waiting for a price drop, it is moving on and has moved on along the way. Once the PS3 reaches a "sweet spot" price point(much like the Gamecube's $99) its sales will not sky rocket because by then the market will have changed considerably, the appeals will have been fulfilled already. By then the market will have adopted a variety of other products. Will have iPhone number 5 and custom internet TV or whatever, the market will not magically be there for a cheaper PS3 by then. Remember the PS1, the PS2, all home consoles that ever won a console war had a growing momentum of some sort. Remember the momentum, if you can't feel it don't assume it is gonna spring out of nowhere, certainly it's not impossible but it's very unlikely because much of that momentum is entrenched with the product itself. And the way the PS3 was built to accommodate old trends, I can tell you this stuff is not gonna be taking off considerably in the future.

Grampy (on 07 February 2009)

I'm old enough to remember and to have owned a Betamax VCR. The Betamax and VHS used physically almost identical tape although the cassettes were different. The Beta format gave a better quality image but the media and the recorder were substantially more expensive. The advantage that won the war for VHS was the fact that it offered SLP mode which gave 3 times the recording time although with wretched quality. Apparently it was good enough. Eventually it also doomed the Beta format in movie rentals even though they were always in the high quality mode where recording times were identical. Because people were not going to own a VCR just for rental movies and another for home video, soon the rental dealers quit carrying the Beta format.

a3hmax (on 07 February 2009)

WII sales better than PS2, I knew that form the beggining, its´t new. Now, Sony it´s a corporation so big like Microsoft, but now theirs interests are much similar one to other, but in the middle we have a little company that only makes games, Nintendo onlu depends of the videogame market, to much inferior to sony and Microsoft, maybe they win because are focused only to games.

MikeB (on 07 February 2009)

@ CTifer Nevertheless despite its slow start the original Playstation sold over 100 million units. I just wanted to put things into perspective.

MikeB (on 07 February 2009)

@ Punisher VHS already took a market share lead by 1979. Sony started to sell their own VHS VCRs when you were 5 years old. I fail to see how this may have affected you so much to still drag on about this long past format war. I think the success of Sony 3.5 diskette format probably affected you far more. Nearly all my Amiga games for example came supplied on 3.5 inch diskettes.

XxXProphecyXxX (on 07 February 2009)

So a system needs to have 9999999999.99m sales for yous to acknowledge it??? how much share do you get from the profits these company makes??? I WANT IN TOO!!!!

PostModGuru (on 07 February 2009)

@Gohan Exactly Right! There is no conceivable way that the ps3 can overcome the 360. Especially considering the current economic hangman happening all around the earth. Good Luck Sony! I'll pick you up when you drop the price to $200.00, until then I'll enjoy my WII60 and my turntables!

Gohan (on 07 February 2009)

deluded to even think that Sony could catch microsoft, who are out sellign them by 50-70k every week....the gap is getting bigger eevry week, the battle is over. can we just please enjoy our gaming?. I'll be loving KIllzone 2 this month regardless how much the PS3 is struggling. it doesn't matter what the PS3 has done compeered to the 360 in its first 2 years, your just pasting over the cracks to make it sound good. the fact is the 360 is selling faster than hotcakes right now!. it has a 6 million gap on the PS3 12 months ago, which has increased by 2 million more to 8 million last year. we aren't going to catch Microsoft, end of!....just enjoy your PS3!

ZuZayLi (on 07 February 2009)

yes good but Wii is 26 millions ahead with the same launch date

emo_parker (on 06 February 2009)

PS3 is jogging behind the 360, waiting for them to run out of breath(price cuts..lol)

CTifer (on 06 February 2009)

@MikeB "Sony has overcome much worse, for example with the original Playstation. The PS3 performed much better than the PSX taking equal timeframes." I would hope so. You do realize that the software/hardware business is MUCH larger now than before, right?

Punisher (on 06 February 2009)

@MikeB "VHS already had a vast majority market share many years before you were born..." I beg to differ. After reading articles linked in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Videotape_format_war they were about even when i was born (1983). (Beta sold better in first years in market, but started gradually lose marketshare at some point) (And i assume that you are older than me and most of here, even though you haven't put your age on your profile) ;)

GTAIV08 (on 06 February 2009)

looking at this, the only console thats doomed is the 360! it sold the least out of all consoles in the same timeframe.

Dgc1808 (on 06 February 2009)

The systems doing pretty well. LTD seems unpredictable for everything this gen...

GamerBOB (on 06 February 2009)

I think SONY will remain 3rd and be just fine. What marketing strategey hurt who the most? IMO SONY's continued support of the PS2 shot themselves in the foot. Even if just a quarter of PS2 sales, during the time the PS3 has been out, were PS3 sales Xbox360 would be 3rd. Of course SONY profits would be even worse... Despite all the fan boy crap we need to hope that the 3 players all stay players. It keeps quality in check to a degree. Although look at large amount of trash on the Wii (software)

Skeeuk (on 06 February 2009)

imo the biggest fall for sony was the 360 enjoying a heavy 16month start.........it may be posible hat that start will be very hard to overcome........only going into its 4rth year 360 was out long enough for some serious manufacturing reduction costs. hence cheaper prices. i belive ps3 going into its 4rth year wilth reduced manufacturing costs will see good price cuts. a ps3 doesnt need to be at 360 price to sell more than it.........id say a 199pound ps3 would just tyake off. but either way 360 will also enjoy good gaming aswell as ps3. i cnt stand ppl wen they say ps3e has no games lol

Theo (on 06 February 2009)

So we've seen that overall the Ps3 can outsell the 360. And we've seen what a price drop did to the 360, so I can't wait for the innevitable. But should I care? I allready own one so a pricedrop doesn't affect me :P

miiiguel (on 06 February 2009)

oh..., and it's also public now that the Cell was ready for 2005 launch, as it was part of the deal with IBM. So much for the later/more-advanced tech... Something else held the launch of PS3, what it was they don't say in the book, because they don't spread rumours and FUD (disguised as *fact* - in capital letters...) . Another nice feature of the book which talks about an industry that is fertile on such things. They do say they think it was the "not-so-good-at-the-time" Blu-Ray tech.

MonstaMack (on 06 February 2009)

Look at it this way and try not to be a fanboy about it: Microsoft had a early lead that has given them the 8 million console lead. However, if Sony were to release the console the same time as the 360 do you really think it would have benefited the PS3? The PS3 was very costly already, imagine the cost of the PS3 launching a year earlier. How many of you would have spent $800 on a PS3? Even if they removed BC that would have only saved them $100. Microsoft played their cards right (or wrong if you look at the RROD fiasco) by getting out of the gate early and it helped them win the war by the PS3. The Wii wins the overall war because of innovation that has succeeded on the market and has not only garnered gamer's attention but also someone who had no interest in games as well. For the record "this generation of gaming" ends when the next generation is out. Common sense would yield when the 720 is out and the 360 beats the PS3 that would place the 360 in second place this generation regardless of how the PS3 sells when the 720 is out.

Arius Dion (on 06 February 2009)

Magiccase: So sales of the PS2 prove it to be the best console ever. but sales of the Wii only prove it to be better marketed than their competition? You can't have it both ways my friend.

miiiguel (on 06 February 2009)

Well, in a nutshell: There's this idea that Sony designed the Cell. Well it didn't. IBM did - the guys who wrote this book (it goes into that "making/having made" expression you used to bach 360), and they can and will be using it anytime they want. Can you guess who designed 360 *custom* chip? Yeah... same company. Same dudes. Same tech... *customized*. Well read the book, very interresting.

miiiguel (on 06 February 2009)

@ Spartan Law: "The company with the least to gain from this generation, as it stands, is Microsoft, FACT. I don't mean to come off harsh with that but they are a software manufacturer currently making/having made (not sure on that) technology which they do not own rights to." Buddy, for a "no fan of Sony" you sure have that anti-MS 90's trend... I recommend the reading of this book: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Race-New-Game-Machine-Playstation/dp/0806531010/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1233943035&sr=1-1 You do seem that you know bollocks about the technology inside 360 and PS3.

miiiguel (on 06 February 2009)

"Microsoft sticks the Xbox with Zune, Mobile OS software and a few other little dinky yet profitable segments to make the Xbox department" So... MS puts the very profitable Zune in the same segment as Xbox so the later looks better?! LOL!

animexplorer (on 06 February 2009)

Sony should just concentrate on their first party games and the customers will come. i personally think this gen is disastrous with so many bad PS360 multiplatform games. KZ2 and Uncharted 2 FTW!

mike_intellivision (on 06 February 2009)

The console is doing fine. It is just not doing PS2 numbers. Lifetime, it may exceed PS2 sales in Europe. But it is doubtful that will happen in the US (more competition) or Japan (increased market focus/fixation on handhelds). Mike from Morgantown

TheSource (on 06 February 2009)

It isn't just shelves it is distributors. As for PS2, the 140m was a misquote from Kaz. He meant 130m if you look at Sony's documents and through Dec PS2 shipments are 136m. We base that on Sony's annual report through March 2008 where they note unit sales of PS2 are almost 130m (PS2s bought by retail) and then by adding the June, Sept, Dec quarterly shipment figures to that. http://www.vgchartz.com/forum/thread.php?id=24847&page=23

ilovetogame (on 06 February 2009)

come on seriously the ps3 won't be selling nearly as long as the wii. fanboys really need to stop that delusion. yeah these numbers show that the ps3 isn't doing terrible. for example it'll be passing gamecube sales in the next 3-4 months. and it'll be passing xbox sales sometime in the second half of this year. so for being the 3rd place console this gen (where it will likely stay) it is doing much better that last gen's 2nd and 3rd place consoles. but still, comparing it to its predecessors through this timeline it's sold basically 50% of what the ps2 had. also it won't be selling for 9-10 years like the ps2, probably more like 7 years when the new gen comes out. so it'll probably end up with roughly 40% of ps2 lifetime sales. but that ain't bad, it could sell 60 million maybe when all is said and done, incredible for a 3rd place console. so yes its doing bad compared to the competition but compared to past losing consoles its doing very well. this really just speaks to the growing video game market when the two losing consoles will both almost certainly outsell the snes (greatest system ever easily!). and this gen looks to grow more than any other previous gen cuz gamers aren't just switching over to the wii, they are also heavily switching to the ps3/360 and then the wii is pulling in a whole new vast market as well. this gen sales could reach close to 300m, thats insane, could be up around 100m from last gen. its all based on perspective, against competition ps3 sales are bad, against its predecessors ps3 sales are very bad, against past losing consoles ps3 sales are very good.

MAFKKA (on 06 February 2009)

@GUNTAR Not really cus they launched in the same month of 2006. PS3 launched in 2007. But this is what 360 users claim now. That they're winning the "war" vs PS3 because they've sold more units. So if we'll see a 720 out in 2 years, the PS3 can claim the lead vs Microsoft since they've sold more units. PS3 WINS!?

Guntar (on 06 February 2009)

@MAFKKA That's like saying that the 360 is selling better than the Wii because, when the Wii launched, the 360 had sold more units.

brendin24 (on 06 February 2009)

the ps2 and ds are so close, has the ds passed the ps2 in overall sales yet

elvisbin (on 06 February 2009)

@Cheat & The Source: so according to you, there are about 2m PS3 still sitting on shelves?? By your method you should at least narrow down a gap a bit to be more precise. And how about the case of the PS2? 140+m shipped, around 17m still waiting to be purchased?

Alby_da_Wolf (on 06 February 2009)

In the current situation, Wii (as long as it keeps on selling so well) and PS2 are out of reach for PS3, but PSOne is within reach, and given the crisis and how much Sony sacrificed to make PS3 help BD victory, it could be quite content to keep on acting to reach this goal, more ambitious goals should be considered only if and when it will be able to price PS3 at a popular level.

magicaces (on 06 February 2009)

TWRoO: :-) Very true indeed PS3 is doing well in Europe but not as well in the rest of the world...just making the point that although PS3 is getting flak on sales it is actually not doing to badly, not fantastic but still okay and doing better than 360 overall on the same time line, also with an ever expanding games market it will continue to do so. Id disagree with that the Wiii will outlast the PS3 though, in my opinion yes the the Wii is very popular generally at the moment, it will drop of rapidly in 2-3 years time whereas the PS3 will increase in popularity over the next 2-3 years and with price drops outsell the Wii in later years (obviously not outsell the Wii period due its big lead!) And take your point on the switching on of my consoles, will keep that to myself in future

Aquietguy (on 06 February 2009)

The NES is the best console ever. If it wasn't for it there wouldn't be a PS2. It single handedly revived the home console market. The wii is on pace to be the best the way it is expanding the market.

coasterlove (on 06 February 2009)

Too many numbers...my head hurts!

MikeB (on 06 February 2009)

@ Punisher > @MikeB > yep, Sony has overcomed much worse: > Betamax (weren't the reason it lost to VHS, because they didn't want > porn on Betamax ?) I think that wasn't the crucial factor. I always seem to wrongly assume people bringing up Betamax are much older than me. Personally as a kid I had only seen a Video 2000 instead of VHS recorders. VHS already had a vast majority market share many years before you were born...

HanzoTheRazor (on 06 February 2009)

2009 will be a very good year for SONY.

TWRoO (on 06 February 2009)

@magicaces. 1. PS2 being the best with the best games is an opinion 2. PS3 is currently behind the PS2 by 10% in EUROPE ONLY, and that is partly because in PS2s first 98 weeks, it had 1 Christmas period (of it's 2) which was heavily supply constrained..... wheras in the PS3s first 98 weeks it had 2 perfectly fine Christmases, with ample supply. I do agree the PS3 is doing really well in Europe still, but it is not elsewhere in the world. 3. The PS3 is not guaranteed to last much longer than the average console, and it is very unlikely it will last any longer than the Wii will too, never mind "much longer".... the length of a consoles life is determined by it's popularity, the PS3 is not the most popular console. 4. Well done with that anecdotal evidence, I shall counter with my knowledge that my Wii is turned on every day, almost without exception.

TWRoO (on 06 February 2009)

@Spartan Law. Erm. not sure what you are on about with Nintendo and Sony architecture, the PS1, 2 and 3 have all been vastly different because Sony made totally different chips each time.... the Wii chips were improvements based on the GC chips. Second to that, regarding fiscal reports, Nintendo breaks down the majority of the information in it's reports.... so you can quite easily find how much revenue was made on software alone, or hardware alone, or just the non-video gaming bit alone (which is minute by the way) For instance for the 9 months ending December 2008, the total revenue of Nintendo was 1.536 trillion Yen.... of which 1.533 trillion was the gaming business. True the main reason Sony don't do so is because they are a much bigger company than Nintendo, with lots of other stuff to say. But the difference between reporting profit for Sony's gaming division, and Nintendo reporting profit from the whole company is minute, like less than 0.3% of Nintendo is non-gaming. In addition, I don't believe Sony gives out both operating and net profit for each division, so we only get operating profit for the gaming division which can be very different from net profit.

magicaces (on 06 February 2009)

Playsation2 is the best console of all time by far, sold the best, had the best games was awesome in its day. PS3 started slow but this article shows its sales haven't been as far low as people have been led to believe, only tracking 10% less than PS2 and selling better than 360 in the same time line aint half bad. PS3 £20million and 360 £28million - the 360 was out a whole year earlier. The PS3 will have a much longer cycle than the wii as well and with better game titles coming out each year it will only improve over more time. Nintendo have done amazing with the Wii because its marketed for a bigger and wider market compared to PS3 and 360 which is fair play they've made loads out of it but my Wii is only ever switched on when the family come round, which isnt often :-)

Bladeforce (on 06 February 2009)

Arius I agree! When all is said and done, Sony will absolutely hate the fact it is getting raped by both other consoles. I mean come on the MD was in tears when announcing the financial results a couple of weeks ago. I think he knows what a bad state it is in possibly doomed. Sony just cant keep going the way they are today BIG changes will happen.

Arius Dion (on 06 February 2009)

I'd go with SNES as the greatest console homie;) No disrespect!

Spartan Law (on 06 February 2009)

Can't help but write this due to the fact that although I'm no fan of Sony, they have a much more sound approach to their business plan than Microsoft has and it should be stated as so. (Let it be said I owned a Wii but sold it to my folks after I never used it due to them being on it and I currently own and profusely play a 360) All 3 companies have very different backstories that seem to be getting ignored in the bashing of each other's console. The company with the least to gain from this generation, as it stands, is Microsoft, FACT. I don't mean to come off harsh with that but they are a software manufacturer currently making/having made (not sure on that) technology which they do not own rights to. Next gen hardware for MS is going to be the same story unless they break this cycle of chucking money at other people till things work out. Now, they most certainly have the software advantage in my opinion with Live and some of their IP's now rival the bigger IP's from Sony and Nintendo but still, they need to get some of the manufacturing and hardware R&D on a more solid basis than leased. Nintendo is to be honest in as crappy a hardware situation as MS. I highly doubt the next offering is going to be based on anything in the Wii box itself, I'm sure it'll have Wiimotes but I'm talking CPU/GPU etc... Still though, although most of the Wii tech will be left to rot, their manufacturing and R&D networks are much more substantial and controlled than MS's. Nintendo in my opinion also has the weakest online offering which will need to be beefed up alot. On the flipside though they are making disgustingly large profits which they can plough into R&D aswell as having the reputation for winning this generation and the major perks this has (shelf space, brand recognition, fanbase etc..). Sony is a devious company. They don't have the megabucks MS as a whole as and Sony's game division probably falls astonishingly shy of what Nintendo rakes in BUT they are the only company that has multiple interests related to their consoles. Cell processor: Started off shockingly bad and has gone through multiple revamps and improvements and is now UNEQUIVOCALLY better off due to the PS3. Whether the PS3 is better off because of the Cell is a different arguement which although interesting is short sighted. Blu Ray: Again, the PS3 has pro's and con's in using the technology but Sony itself has great benefits from inputting it's hardware into homes via the PS3. I realise I've used the the 2 most obvious examples but fact of the matter is that any breakthroughs/advancements Sony makes in regards to the PS3 benefits the rest of Sony aswell (Transistors, Memory, Motherboard design, Heating, HDMI, Power supply and everything else). As gamers, is this good news for us? Debatable. Is it good business for Sony? Hell yes. As for pure game purposes though, ignoring corporate strategy: Play what you like and be happy. From a corporate standpoint: Nintendo are filthy rich, Sony are doing surprisingly and subtly better than it seems and Microsoft is looking spiffy software wise and dodgy as hell hardware wise. My last point, I swear, is that its not completely fair or even possible with publicly accessible data to compare the game divisions of each company. Nintendo has trading cards, cartoons and many other small profit generators in its annual reports that aren't seperate from their video games. Microsoft sticks the Xbox with Zune, Mobile OS software and a few other little dinky yet profitable segments to make the Xbox department (EDD i believe) look better. (There is proof to this in their annual reports if you go far enough back as you can find the report where they merged those profitable segments into the then flailing Xbox department.) Sony is the only company of the big 3 who's game division I am lead to believe is accurate to its Playstation brands alone, which although good for us has earned them alot of flak when they do poorly.

@Arius Dion Wii is amazing! and now that Nintendo aims to surpass the Playstation 2 units mark! it might really happen!!! I hope they wouldn't accomplish this though. Playstation 2 is the best console of all time and I think most ppl agree with me here XD

no time for fanboyish comments... am returning to play my kz2 demo

"coolestguyever says": "PS2 was a beast. It launched $50 more than the wii and is barely being outsold by the Wii. " The PS2 had a DVD player when everyone wanted one unlike the current PS3/BR combo. The Wii doesn't even have a DVD player a full generation after the PS2 yet it is still outselling it so far and the Wii took its records for the best Nov. ever and the best month ever. "The real question is will the wii be selling 9 years into its life like the PS3 or will the lack of good software shorten its life"? I’m assuming PS3 was a typo and you meant PS2 in your last statement. Nintendo stated the lifespan of the Wii as 5 yrs when it first went on sale so no, I doubt it will match the PS2 after 9 years but the PS2 didn’t have HD consoles to contend with until the end of it’s lifespan. The Wii on the other hand began it life competing with two HD offerings and it is crushing them. The Wii should perform well for it projected lifespan anything beyond that is just extra gravy for Nintendo. Three holiday seasons without a price drop gives Nindy a little room to expand its user base. Another thing to keep in mind is the Wii appeals to a very broad older demographic of non-gamers who enjoy the software that’s available.

Araknie87 (on 06 February 2009)

eh eh XD. This is really bad for ps3, just see the sales of the PS2 and the sales of PS3, considering that and consider why sony doesn't release a profit balance for public. Even consider how much costs the better version of the ps3 and the other better versions of the other consoles, and you will find the amount of loss.

Arius Dion (on 06 February 2009)

Damn Wii really is a sales phenom.

saicho (on 06 February 2009)

@MAFKKA There are only two players in console wars?

averyblund (on 05 February 2009)

Good to hear, I think strong competition in HD land is key to innovation. Glad to hear Sony is holding its own. However, a price cut really is needed. Early this year it looked like the PS3 was really on its way to overtaking the 360- that has changed significantly in the last few months. Sony needs to pick a strategy, either keep the price high in the hope of turning a profit soon, but giving up the #2 slot, or slashing the price and eating the losses with the intent of being the HD market leader and trying to win the tide of consumer opinion. Right now they seem to be trying to straddle the line, and in today's economy that is not the choice that will serve them best.

Grey Acumen (on 05 February 2009)

I think it's worth noting, that since the launch of the PS3, Microsoft has essentially sold 1.1 Xbox 360s for every 1 PS3 sold. 360 had roughly 6m consoles out before PS3 launched, and since then it's sold 22m vs PS3's 20m. You can interpret that as good or bad really, either by saying that the difference hardly puts PS3 at a distinct advantage, or by saying that the 360 is still maintaining a notable lead.

halogamer1989 (on 05 February 2009)

Good news for SCE!

Final-Fan (on 05 February 2009)

I've been telling some people this for a while. Maybe now I can save the effort with a link. Great job!

coolestguyever (on 05 February 2009)

Good read. PS2 was a beast. It launched $50 more than the wii and is barely being outsold by the Wii. The real question is will the wii be selling 9 years into its life like the PS3 or will the lack of good software shorten its life?

MAFKKA (on 05 February 2009)

@ GUNTAR Well if Microsoft will release its new console 2 years from now, i guess the PS3 will be in the lead of the console war since by then the PS3 will have sold 40m units (based uppon todays sales rate), and the 720 none.. PS3 WINS!?

Serious_frusting (on 05 February 2009)

this is what i have been saying all along

dib8rman (on 05 February 2009)

Has nothing to do with America or Americans, has everything to do with lazy journalism. That comment was pretty nasty imo.

TheSource (on 05 February 2009)

The 21.3m is what Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft call unit sales Elvis. It is sales to retailers and other middle men like Walmart. We track the amount of stuff that goes from those middle men to actual homes. Since retailers hold inventory and have shelves this means there is a lag from unit sales, which we call shipments, to sales (product that makes it to gamer homes).

Punisher (on 05 February 2009)

@MikeB yep, Sony has overcomed much worse: Betamax (weren't the reason it lost to VHS, because they didn't want porn on Betamax ?) Same thing almost happened with BR, but i take that they learned from their mistake in the past. Btw, who was it that said that people who have Ps2 will all buy Ps3, even after they announced the price ? @darthdevidem01 Just like with MGS4 ?

Cheat1011 (on 05 February 2009)

Those are shipped numbers, elvis (LOL). The price cut did wonders for the 360 - it's regularly outselling the PS3 in much of Europe, now. The 360's 2008 Others numbers are higher than 2005-2007 numbers. 2005-2007: 5,108,047 2008: 5,249,114

MAFKKA (on 05 February 2009)

THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT IVE BEEN SAYING OVER THE LAST 6 MONTHS! Just check the other PS3 article about the 20m sold. I should go into journalism.

Guntar (on 05 February 2009)

What this fails to mention is that the 360 is really taking off in Europe, and the PS3 is falling behind. If you look at 360 sales in Europe through the same period that the PS3 was selling, you see that the PS3 starts better off than the 360, and then they become even, and then, in the past couple months, the 360 has been outselling the PS3. In other words, Sony is LOSING momentum. Also, the PS3 was probably losing a lot more money per unit than the 360 (I have no proof for this, as it is conjecture; however, based upon current and entry prices, I feel I am correct). As such, Sony's strategy is based upon losing money so that it may gain money through market dominance--and yet they are losing marketshare to an older competitor. Sony is using an unsustainable strategy to prop up a losing product. Sony's strategy was aimed at killing the 360 by offering something better; people would say, "why buy a 360 when you can buy a PS3?" and outpace the 360's current sales. That has failed to happen. Instead, this is what will happen: Sony will continue to fall behind the 360, and, even though it may outsell the 360's sales based upon where the 360 was relative to its launch date (as they have here, and probably will continue to because Blue Ray has won), Microsoft will release its new console 2 years from now, and render the PS3 obsolete. Because the 360's marketshare was greater, and because it's cheaper, those who want to play this-gen's games for cheap will buy a 360 or a Wii; those who want newer technology will buy Microsoft's new console. At this point, the PS3 will die, after never managing to match the 360's sales. Of course, my analysis could be wrong. GT5 will be the real test of the PS3; if the PS3 can surpass the 360's current sales when it releases, then Sony could get the momentum back in its court. Furthermore, if FF XIII sells consoles in Japan (it's on 360 in NA and Europe), then the PS3 could get the strong Japanese support that currently is going toward the Wii, and that could also help Sony through NA and Europe. However, if GT5 and FFXIII fail to move enough consoles, there goes the PS3.

elvisbin (on 05 February 2009)

Sony has announced that the PS3 had sold 21.3m by end 2008, should be around 22m by now. VGC undertracked it.

FishyJoe (on 05 February 2009)

Actually, Sony did expect much better sales. They were forced to lower their shipment estimates significantly the first and second fiscal year. And they didn't even make those lowered targets. It's would have been extremely embarassing to lower estimates 3 years in a row, so they lowballed this year's estimate.

MikeB (on 05 February 2009)

@ The Source Sony reported a profit last quarter. Sony expects a 1.6 Billion USD net loss (looks worse due to weak dollar) for the fiscal year which hasn't ended They have been generating straight profits for the last 14 year, so they can take it. Of course running a company employing over 180 thousand people (20K more than they did in 2006) is costly and they need to cut back on this due to the economic situaton. I find it far more disturbing a company like Microsoft with a solid monopoly cuts jobs, while they employ relatively few in comparison, certainly when taking into account profits. With regard to PS3 sales, Sony actually stated they won't alter their fiscal year sales expectation for the PS3, so around 10 million. One thing is IMO for sure selling at PS2 or Wii like levels early on in the game would have been far too costly, I don't think Sony would have allowed this for financial reasons even if they could have.

SpartanFX (on 05 February 2009)

nice read

TheSource (on 05 February 2009)

PS3 has never been doomed... Certain divisions at Sony, given 16,000 worker layoffs, $2.9b losses, and the potential of $5b losses in the year ending March 2010 (analyst estimates), are screwed, and something will have to give. But PS3/PSP like Wii/DS were designed with the same plan in mind and I'd wager PS3/PSP are on the low end of Sony's expectations, while Wii/DS are on the high end of Nintendo's expectations.

Pristine20 (on 05 February 2009)

@ Just when I was led to believe the ps3 was doomed...LMAO

darthdevidem01 (on 05 February 2009)

@sungson just like PS3 sales will when GT5 n FF13 hit

sungson (on 05 February 2009)

of course sales is down in japan for the wii. when mh3, dqx release on wii the wii sales will rise up dramatically.

MikeB (on 05 February 2009)

However considering the amount of units retailers bought I do think the PS3 is a little undertracked by VGChartz. And maybe the 360 a little overtracked. The 360 Core sold well during the holiday season over here, but the higher specced units remained in huge supply and sold slowly. The PS3 actually sold out a couple of times here at our local Media Markt. It does seem there's more unsold 360 retail stock floating around. That's why I have my doubts.

MikeB (on 05 February 2009)

Considering entry pricing, some bad biased press coverages in the past from major commercial news networks and some hefty competition IMO the PS3 performed well. Sony has overcome much worse, for example with the original Playstation. The PS3 performed much better than the PSX taking equal timeframes. I expect PS3 sales to skyrocket in the years ahead of us.
