Take-Two: Grand Theft Auto V Nears 100 Million Units Sold - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 03 August 2018 / 3,887 Views

Take-Two in its financial reports for the first quarter of the current fiscal year, which ended June 30, revealed that sales for Grand Theft Auto V are nearing 100 million units.

"Fiscal 2019 is off to a solid start, with first quarter operating results that exceeded our expectations," said Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick.

"This performance was driven by better-than-expected recurrent consumer spending on Grand Theft Auto Online and NBA 2K18, as well as robust ongoing demand for Grand Theft Auto V, which is now approaching 100 million units sold-in to date. Accordingly, we are increasing our operating outlook for fiscal year 2019.

"We are incredibly excited about the October 26th launch of Rockstar Games’ Red Dead Redemption 2, as well as the upcoming releases of NBA 2K19 – which marks the 20th anniversary of the series and the 30th anniversary of the Visual Concepts development team – and WWE 2K19. Fiscal 2019 is poised to be another year of profitable growth for Take-Two, and we expect to deliver record operating results. Looking ahead, we have a strong development pipeline across our labels and are exceedingly well positioned for long-term growth and margin expansion."

If only there was a really popular, possible hybrid handheld device that they could put this on to make the last leap to 100m.....

Not going to happen. It’s hard to turn the other check after Nintendo dicks you. Speaking as a person fired from NOA headquarters. It’s personal. I know how dma and angel studios feel.

I poured all my love and they dropped me like I meant nothing. Fuck Nintendo.

wait... you really think GTAV won't come out on the Switch at some point in the systems lifespan?

Not sure what being ruffled over getting fired has to do with this, but personal feelings are often put aside when there is money to be made.

@marine Dma made games for Nintendo in the 90s before forming Rockstar North. Nintendo treated DMA badly and interfered with every step in creation of body harvest. Angel studios was in the same situation. Except the only indication I have that the don’t want to work with Nintendo is that it was obvious how Take-Two and Capcom treated them way better. They are now Rockstar Sandiego.

I don’t think North or San Diego will ever let their games on the switch. Other divisions sure. Bully, man hunt, la noire. Not gta or rdr. There’s just no reason to come back when they have all the success they need. Nintendo is notorious in their dealings with 3rd party developers. Sometimes decisions are made in general principles especially when money is already taken care of.

How do you mean?

@marine It is known.

After Nintendo saved the games market by betting every penny it had. Nintendo rightfully owned and controlled everything. They set up high fees for publishers and stringent quality assurance expectations.

Publishers had to make products at very high costs. And publishers were locked into contracts that restricted ports to other systems.

This was understandable during the eighties. But when SNES came out it only worsened. With SEGA as a viable option publishers had every right to feel free to make choices.

When PlayStation came onto the seen Sony made very attractive agreements. Low quality assurance requirements, low fees, total freedom. Of coarse this is why we have buggy shit releases of otherwise good games. Skyrim, destiny, and the like would have release at 99% functionality if launched on a Nintendo.

Also keep in mind that Nintendo hardware revisions force developers to start from scratch each generation. Where as ms and sony evolve their consoles and maintain the core concept.

Have you anything a little more current? This is from some 20+ years ago...

I am under the impression that developing/porting to the Switch is easy considering its support for Unreal Engine 4, a very popular engine. Would explain why Doom 2016, as an example, exists on the platform.

Really the existence of gta Chinatown wars by rockstar north/Leeds blows this theory out of the water. Also you speak like Nintendo did a reset of their hardware each gen? Wii was effectively an oc GameCube and the switch has shown just how easily and well games from the wiiu make the leap over from that system.

Nintendo having a tight leash on 3rd parties to stop them from basically ruining the industry today cannot really be linked to the switch and practices today.

Open the us eshop, it's coming up on having 1000 titles on it soon, the system is out for about a year and a half, that's more than 2 third party games per day that launch on the console.

@Ganon Chinatown Wars was made by Leeds with north being a supervisory role. After all, it’s north’s baby. I’ll make you a bet that GtaV won’t be on switch ever. Name the stakes.

Nintendo changes there hardware dramatically each gen. I’m not talking about risc or cisc, powerpc or x86 architecture. It’s the inclusion of motion gaming, second screen, touch screen, cartridge formats, and whatever else I might have forgot. These changes are inconsistent and unpredictable gen to gen.

The damage done in the nineties was never recovered from. 3rd parties mostly stuck around through the GameCube. But by the time wii came out. 3rd parties concluded that their visions we’re and priorities were aligned with the hd clones.

There is simply so much to do in GTAV I have to applaud Rockstar for the quality they bring in each installment. So much detail for an open world game that still puts other open world games to shame even in 2018.
