Research firm SuperData Research has released its virtual reality headset sales predictions for the end of the year.

The PlayStation VR will be the best-selling VR headset by the end of 2016 with sales of 2,602,307 units, followed by the Samsung Gear VR with sales of 2,316,632.

SuperData is also predicting the Google Daydream to sell 450,083 units, the HTC Vive to sell 420,108 units and the Oculus Rift to sell 355,088 units.

"SuperData’s approach to the market for consumer-centered virtual reality includes retail checks, executive interviews with decision-makers from all of relevant firms in the marketplace, pricing data, our survey-based consumer tracking panel, and digital content purchases collected from our data providers," SuperData told Upload VR.

"We combine both proprietary and public data sources to arrive at an objective reading of the market, including financial information obtained through our client network. Analysts are expressly forbidden to buy, sell, hedge or otherwise deal in the securities of any of the following public companies whose primary revenues come from the creation, selling, or distribution of video games."

It's possible. Given that software sales of digital and bundled software as far as I know aren't counted. It seems high given the low software sales, but considering the high investment of the hardware, people may only be buying a single game since there's a good amount of free content, I know I did.

How is this possible when the software can't even break a 100K units on launch week? Are people buying the hardware with no software? Something doesn't add up.

Normally I'd scoff at the digital sales defense, but when so many of the VR games are digital only...

How is it possible PS4 has sold 45 million when software doesn't even break 5 million units on launch week?

The VR was and is sold out in some countries, so the software sales cant even be an indicator.
Also many people went for digital scince its a paint to switch the games with you headset on

Wow! Didn't know Samsung one sold that much! Apple should join in! But the question is, how much have the PSVR currently sold? Don't we only have Japan numbers?

Considering that they had sold "several hundred thousand" of them week one, I think they should have no trouble selling over 500k if they haven't already.

VR just another fad like Kinect and 3D TV.

People said video games were a fad after the Atari market crash in the 80s. VR may not be the immediate big thing, but it has to have an Atari-esque foundation before it can find its NES-era boom in advancement. Everyone saying it's a fad before it even released are basically demanding it die before it has a chance to become something genuinely groundbreaking.
