PlayStation 3 owners are excited and conflicted for the return of Kratos in God of War: Ascension on March 12, 2013.  While they are excited for another chance to wield the Blades of Chaos, they are also conflicted over the announced multiplayer mode.  The series has always been single player and shoehorning in multiplayer doesn’t always go well.

Take that, Billy Goat Gruff

The multiplayer is basically a score-attack type game.  Killing other players or holding points fills your meter. Once this meter is full, the players’ new objective is to destroy the massive monster in the center of the stage.  Whoever kills the poor bastard first wins.

The combat against other players follows a simple rock-paper-scissors system.  Heavy attacks defeat blocks, light attacks can parry heavy attacks, and blocking stops light attacks.  Which would mean more if it wasn’t a gaggle of greasy greek guys smacking each other around throwing all strategy out the window.

If anything it sure matches the the tone of God of War, but it ends up feeling like more of a gory minigame.  All the killing before the main monster shows up feels like meaningless violence, which is saying something from a series that is known for that.  Basically, it doesn’t matter how many points/kills one team has, if you kill the monster you win; it is a giant mythical golden snitch in monster form.

At least the game looks good, but that shouldn’t be surprising when God of War has always been a series that pushed itself in the graphics department.  While I’m still interested in the single player portion based on what we’ve seen so far, the multiplayer didn’t really do much to increase that interest.  Others might end up enjoying it, but so far it just isn’t my bag.
