$1.1 Billion Spent on Video Games in September in the US - News

September was a strong month for videos games in the US. Consumers spent $1.1 billion on new physical game and consoles sales from August 31 to September 4, according to NPD. This is up two percent from $1.01 billion spent in September 2013.

Hardware sales more than doubled year-over-year. Hardware sales grew 136 percent to $432.7 million, from $183.4 million. Also month-on-month console sales more than doubled.

"Hardware growth of 136 percent versus September 2013 is the highest growth rate seen this year," said NPD analyst Liam Callahan. "As seen in previous months, was driven by new console hardware sales of PS4 and Xbox One. Console hardware, specifically, was up over 200 percent versus September 2013."

New game sales did not match last year. Destiny had a strong launch, but did not come close to the monster that was Grand Theft Auto V. New game sales dropped 36 percent to $481.2 million, from $754 million a year ago.

"When taking out Grand Theft Auto V and Destiny, sales increased when looking at top 2 through 9 games only," said "This is an indication that sales decline this year were rooted in a poor comparison to last September’s behemoth, Grand Theft Auto V."
