Analyst: Grand Theft Auto V Sales on Next Gen Will be Much Lower than PS3 and Xbox 360 - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 15 October 2014 / 8,472 Views

Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter has stated that sales for Grand Theft Auto V on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One will be much lower than the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360's versions of the game. This comes from a prediction reported by Videogamer.

"We expect an increase in Call of Duty sales this year," he said, "due to the free upgrade feature, Day Zero access, less competition (EA's Battlefield Hardline launches in the March 2015 quarter, and sales of Take-Two's Grand Theft Auto V on next-gen consoles should pale in comparison to sales of the current-gen version of the game last year), and likely improved review scores driven by a three-year development, up from two-year development cycles for previous iterations."

Grand Theft Auto V for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 sold more than 30 million units. The PS3 version has sold 18.58 million units and the Xbox 360 version 14.28 million units. The game made more than $1 billion in its first three days on sale.

Grand Theft Auto V will be released for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on November 18 and in January 2015 for the PC.

when the sales just on the ps3 are still larger than the sales of the xbox one and ps4 combined, why would this even need to be said?

Honestly to point out that a game will sell less than 30 million units on an install base of 15million at most is fucking stupid, like to even open a persons mouth and let those words flow out they should consider being put to sleep... Why quote this?

The interesting prediction is CoD. That franchise has been in decline so people should be picking it to sell less again this year. The GTA V comment is almost a throw away, given as a reason for why he thinks CoD will increase in sales this year. Because the reality of GTA V not selling as much on current gen consoles is a no brainer.

Dark_Lord_2008 (on 15 October 2014)

XBox 360 and PS3 in Sept. 2013 had over 150 million consoles sold combined a huge install base. XBox One and PS4 by March 2015 will have a combined install 25 to 30 million consoles sold. A huge difference in install base obviously means a huge difference in game sales.

GTA V will be an old game over 18 months when it arrives on PS4 and XBox One. It could get lucky and sell a combined total of 10 million sales on PS4 and XBox One due to long sales legs. Only a third of the 30 million+ sold already on PS3 and XBox 360.
