Welcome to the ‘Top 10’ weekly feature. Each week we will be taking a look at the top 10 selling games in a particular genre, platform, most recent month, even sprinkling in the top 10 selling games from a past year. All sales specified will be worldwide, unless stated otherwise. If there is a particular top 10 you want to see leave a comment and it may be featured in a future top 10. As a note all sales figures are retail only.
This week we will be looking at the top 10 selling games in 2013 through September. Last week we looked at the top 10 selling Call of Duty games and the week before that the top 10 selling games Sony games Microsoft games (Updated through the week ending September 21).
Looking at the top 10 bestselling games in 2013 through September, seven of the games were released in 2013 and three in 2012. All three games from 2012 were released in November. Five of the seven games from 2013 were released in September, while one was released in March and one in June.
The top 10 bestselling games in 2013 through September have sold a combined 42.11 million units. The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of Grand Theft Auto V have sold more than 10 million units each. The top eight games have sold more than two million units. While the bottom two games, Call of Duty: Black Ops II for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, has sold just under two million units each.
When the sales of the different versions of Grand Theft Auto V, FIFA Soccer 14 and Call of Duty: Black Ops II are combined we get a much higher total. Grand Theft Auto V has sold a combined 22.63 million units. FIFA Soccer 14 has sold a combined 4.53 million units. Call of Duty: Black Ops II has sold a combined 4.07 million units.
Breaking the sales down by platform there are four PlayStation 3 games, three Xbox 360 games and three 3DS games. The four PlayStation 3 games sold a combined 19.01 million games or 4.75 million units on average. The three Xbox 360 games sold a combined 15.19 million games or 5.06 million units on average. The three 3DS games have sold a combined 7.91 million games or 2.64 million units on average.
The top 10 selling games in 2013 through September as a graph really shows Grand Theft Auto V has sold far above the rest. The two versions of the game have sold more than the rest of the top 10 combined.
Here are the sales figures outside the top 10: The top 25 games have sold more than one million units and the top 69 games have sold more than 500,000 units. The top 201 games have sold more than 200,000 units and the top 382 games have sold more than 100,000 units.
There have been 24.56 million units of hardware sold in 2013 through September and 239.06 million games sold.
The 3DS is the bestselling platform to date in 2013 with 7.01 million units sold. There have also been 2.46 million PSP’s sold, 1.65 million PlayStation Vita’s sold and 0.62 million Nintendo DS’s sold.
The PlayStation 3 is the bestselling home console to date in 2013 with 6.05 million units sold. There have also been 3.97 million Xbox 360’s sold, 1.42 million Wii U’s sold, and 1.38 million Wii’s sold.
The PlayStation 3 has sold the most software in 2013 to date with 77.23 million games sold. There have also been 66.16 million games sold for the Xbox 360, 21.02 million games sold for the Wii, and 5.56 million games sold for the Wii U.
The 3DS has sold the most software for a handhelds in 2013 to date with 28.68 million games sold. There have also been 12.81 million games sold for the DS, 6.41 million games sold for the PSP, and 5.41 million games sold for the PlayStation Vita.
