GameStop Closing 250 Stores, Looking to Purchase Former GAME Stores - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 13 February 2013 / 6,079 Views

Video game retailer GameStop CFO Rob Lloyd spoke during the Goldman Sachs Technology and Internet Conference. He revealed that the retailer plans on closing 250 of its stores, however it will open between 60 and 70 stores in new locations.

200 of the 250 store closures will be in the US, while the other 50 will be in other countries. Also the stores that are closing have not been profitable for some time.

Besides opening between 60 to 70 new stores, GameStop is looking at purchasing 40 former GAME stores in France. With the closing of stores and the opening of new stores, GameStop expects its retail presence to decrease by two percent in 2013.

GameStop's head of digital ventures Chris Petrovic has also left the company earlier this week. "I am extremely proud of what we were able to accomplish since I joined," said Petrovic. "This includes growing digital revenues from below $100m when I joined to over $600m in 2012 through a combination of new product/business development, acquisitions and strategic investments."

I actually enjoy going to Gamestop unlike many people who seem to bash them constantly. I love going into retail stores and checking out all the new games and talking to other people excited about the games i love. Sorry you cant digitally do that.

agreed 100%, most of the people who work in our local gamestop are really good fans of games and generally love to buy and sell them and talk to the community, barring one person who always asks what format games are for.... you want to buy gran turismo 5..... on the xbox ps3 or wii? tis funny tho.

I can't wait until this generation official begins so we all can read the article where GameSpot closes HALF of their stores.

why would you want that? Game brick and mortar stores are really cool places for people interested in gaming to try and get work, a lot of people on this site probably work in a Game store.
