Welcome to the ‘Top 10’ weekly feature. Each week we will be taking a look at the top 10 selling games in a particular genre, platform, most recent month, even sprinkling in the top 10 selling games from a past year. All sales specified will be worldwide, unless stated otherwise. If there is a particular top 10 you want to see leave a comment and it may be featured in a future top 10.

Over the next two months we will be taking a look at the sales in 2012 by platform. Last week we began with looking at the Wii U worldwide launch. This week we are looking at the oldest seventh generation platform, the DS.

Looking at the top 10 bestselling DS games in 2012, three of the titles were released during the year. One game was released in 2004, one in 2005, one in 2006, one in 2009, one in 2010, and two in 2011.

The three games released in 2012 sold a combined 7.31 million units or 61.6 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The two games released in 2011 sold a combined 1.03 million units or 8.7 percent of the total games sold in the top 10.

The top 10 bestselling DS games sold a combined 11.87 million games in 2012. The last big release of the platform, Pokémon Black / White 2, was released in June of last year and sold 6.03 million units. It is the bestselling game for the DS in 2012 and the only game to sell more than five million units. New Super Mario Bros. was the only other title to sell more than one million units. Seven of the 10 games sold more than 500,000 units.

Seven of the games are first party, published by Nintendo, and three are third party. The third party publishers include one Activision title and two Warner Bros. titles. The seven Nintendo published games sold a combined 10.43 million units or 87.9 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The two Warner bros. titles sold a combined 0.91 million units or 7.7 percent of the total games sold in the top 10.

Taking a look at the top 10 bestselling DS games in 2012, it is extremely easy to see how there was only one big game Pokémon Black / White 2. The game sold more than the other nine games in the top 10 combined.

Here are the rest of the DS sales in 2012 outside the top 10: Nintendo sold 3.43 million DS’s in 2012. This is a drop of 61.1 percent when compared to 2011. There were also 40.49 million games sold for the DS in 2012. This is a 50.0 percent year-over-year.

23 games sold 500,000 or more units for the DS in 2012 a d 63 sold 100,000 or more units.

13.67 million games sold for the DS in 2012 were first party, published by Nintendo. Activision sold 3.40 million games for the DS, Warner Bros. 2.50 million games and THQ sold 2.43 million games. Disney sold 2.29 million games, Ubisoft sold 1.81 million games and Sega 1.00 million games.

Looks like Pokemon Owns the DS.

Only as of 2011. Previously, Mario and the Brain Age crowd were bigger. It's just Generation 5 and a couple of newer spinoffs that pushed Pokemon ahead.

Owns the DS? Pokemon owns every Nintendo handheld since its conception.

Class figures considering that Nintendo first party titles rarely get reduced down even after years so most of those 3/4m Mario Kart games were probably still sold around 40euros mark even for a 7 year old game, It's still printing money :)

How, Super Mario 64 DS, after 8 years can still sell that many units really shows how great Mario and Mario 64 is. For this, i demand a full remake for Wii U and add everything that was supposed to be in Super Mario 64 2! Who`s with me?

If I remember correctly a lot of that stuff was put into Galaxy 1 and 2. But a remake wouldn't be bad, just a little on the little chance side.
