Nintendo: Wii U Price to be a Pleasant Surprise - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 08 June 2012 / 13,689 Views

At its E3 Press Conference Nintendo spent most of the time showcasing the game of the Wii U, but they did not unveil the price if its next generation console. Reggie Fils-Aime has spoken with IGN in an interview about the price of the Wii U. While he did not give the price he did say that consumers will be "pleasantly surprised."

"Nintendo believes in being a mass market product, so unlike our competitors when they've launched historical systems to maybe start at a really high price and work their way down, we don't believe in that," said Reggie. "We want to launch at a price that's going to represent an ongoing great value"

"You look at the Wii. Wii stayed at $250 for a really long time, and so we're going to give that same level of thought to the Wii U," Reggie added. "How do we launch at a value that we're going to be able to sustain for a long time? I think people are going to be pleasantly surprised, if you will, about the way we're managing the value equation."

How the hell are you going to be surprised when you should expect Nintendo to release their consoles at a mass market price?

Keep the price low, Nintendo! Think about the 3DS and what it's original price did for the system.

I think, being realistic, $299.99 with Nintendo Land included would be a really good prize, that would surely make me happy! =)

Totally agree. $300 with a pack in game would be a very nice surprise. $300 without a pack in would still be good but not quite as nice.

Considering they said Nintendoland is meant to be proof of concept, like Wii Sports was, surely it has to be bundled anyway.

$299 with Nintendo Land (what they said screams pack in) and also possibly Super Mario Bros. U also. They may come out with two games.

They obviously found a way to make this console's parts less expensive! Good for you, Nintendo!

I would be really surprised if they bundled New Super Mario Bros. U instead of Nintendo Land.

I'm expecting $350. If it's less than that I will indeed be "pleasantly surprised".

i watched the nintendo conference and it seemed like it would be an expensive machine so i guess nintendo will do it for about $300

I would be willing to purchase the system for 350 with a game included, most likely will be NintendoLand but hey, I ain't complaining. I bought the PS3 at 599$ when it was released lol

I hope you mean "more than $399". :)

Nintendo is getting quite a deal on all the parts for the Wii U.

It has no HDD, and it doesn't appear to be launching with a game packed in, unlike Wii.

I'm guessing they'll launch at $300, but at $250 I would be pleasantly surprised.

its 350$... its 280£ in UK and 350€ for overseas in that retailer... we all know that euro its different from dollar but console makers dont know it. so it will be 350$ for sure!

250$/€ eh?
I think even if it's 300 or 350 with a bundle that, please it's easy enough to learn well like Nintendo Land it's gonna be nice.

Did 3ds stay at $250 for a really long time ?

If it was such a pleasant surprise, I think they would have released it already. It it is $250,00 it would be a pleasant surprise. It it is $300,00 it would be nice. If it's more, it wouldn't be even close to a pleasant surprise for me.

The cost of manufacturing are probably not official. They don't even have a release date announced.

Microsoft said the same thing when they launch Kinect for 150$ when all people but the fanboys knew it would be around 150$ at launch

I hope the manage the value equation better than with the 3DS... I don't want to be embasser again...

its only marginally more powerful then the 360. currently a 360 without a HDD is like $120, I am guessing it will launch a basic system for $200 and a better package for $250.

Gilgamesh usrevenge (on 09 June 2012)

You can't forget about that pricey little controller there throwing in, not to mention Nintendo usually has a packed in game. I think $299 - $350.

  • 0
Hibern81 usrevenge (on 10 June 2012)

$200 probably isn't going to happen. The Wii launched at $250 so I would say $300 is probably going to be a good median. Also, we still don't know exactly what's under the hood of the Wii U yet so your statement is purely speculation.

250$ US

Neither competitor can match them, and last gen. consoles are already over-saturated in the market place.

Wii U to be priced at £3.99. That is a lovely surprise.

  • 0
WiiBox3 (on 08 June 2012)

I'll be surprised if it is released at $250 with NSMB WiiU. Otherwise I won't be surprised.

  • 0
ils411 (on 09 June 2012)

$250 - $300 which is in line with the claims that wii u aint that much more powerful than an x360 or ps3.

  • -5
Lollipopanon ils411 (on 09 June 2012)

Considering how cheap hardware is just a couple years old now (and that hardware will be still quite ahead of the current generation), even a $300 machine will be quite a bit more powerful than x360/ps3.

  • +1
Conegamer ils411 (on 11 June 2012)

It seems to be a good 1.5-2x the power of the current gen, at least. And if you want a console to be twice as powerful as the WiiU, you'll be looking at a PS3 pricing fiasco again.
