infinitely surpassing GTA's previous sales (combined of coarse).

The sales are amazing considering its not the holidays and the series has a smaller userbase then last gen. It'll still sell like 15 million combined which is a success no matter which way you look at it.

8.5 sold so far, its tracked at around 9 mil here, so its overtracked by a bit, especially considering when publishers numbers are somewhat exaggerated

big surprise SA had 100m PS2, GTA4 has ~30mHD consoles. At 8.75m sold games in less than a month not selling as much as SA is a)not surprising and b) not exactly terrible

Actually 360 software sales are a LOT better than the XBOX. Yeah its only ahead by 2 million in the first 18 months, but that doesnt include Halo 3 (though it had Gears). But importantly, the XBOX had two or three times as many games in the same period

You're right. The PS2 DID have a huge install base. That's actually my point. PS2s sold like hotcakes from the time it was launched till even to this day. Last month 124k PS2s, 188k PS3s, 187k 360s, and 714k Wiis were sold in the US.

Only 2 months in the PS2s history has it sold less than what the PS3 sold last month (April of 2004 and last month). The PS3 has already had 9 other months where we've seen less than 180k units sold in the US.

With GTA IV saturation already high, it will be slow going from here on out based on PS3 and 360 sales (360 sales are much better, but are only comparable to first gen Xbox sales).

Initially yes, they will drop like a rock, it wont stay like this for long, SA had MUCH more sustainable sales mainly due to holiday period but also the HUGE PS2 fanbase. But i think that eventually, it has the potential to hit 10-15 mil. Its wishful thinking, but this gen, games dont come out too often, hence itll stand out even more as the one and true killer app, but also, this is a game that just about anybody would and IMHO should buy.

The 360 and PS3 are going to be supported for a long time, and also the next GTA is AT LEAST 2 years away (most likely 3), so its got time to sell as well, but also by then itll have a larger userbase to sell on too.

Wow! This IS amazing. When you COMBINE PS3 GTA IV sales with Xbox 360 GTA IV sales, you get GTA IV outselling San Andreas 45% in week 1 and 16% in week two.

Week 3 an week 4 saw sales BELOW San Andreas's by 2% and 9% respectively (not even including Japan numbers)!

This is extremely impressive for San Andreas, when you consider that the gaming industry was smaller in 2004, SA was exclusive to ONE system (PS2), and was still based on the old GTA III engine (very little improvement to graphics). Compare this to the overhyped GTA IV that is based on the brand new and advanced RAGE engine that uses euphoria!

I think GTA IV sales will level out, but as I had suspected it just can't compete sales wise with GTA: San Andreas. Check it out for yourself. Seeing IV sales drop like a rock was no surprise to me.

Oh well, time to move on to bigger and better things, MGS4, GRID, Far Cry 2, and so on.

When NA data comes in GTA4 will be above halo 3 was at this point in its lifespan for the first time. Further proof that GTA4 should easily outsell halo 3 on the 360 alone.

Wow you really try to find something bad with the sales do you? SA had a userbase of what? 100m PS2? And GTA4 outsold it? How can you spin that into something negative? More than 1 in 4 PS3 owners has it now. Just insane.

I'm not surprised by the numbers at all. Initial sales have been incredible. This was totally expected as the game was overhyped across the board (perfect scores from almost every reviewer, despite the numerous issues/complaints that have been raised by many players).

So, it doesn't surprise me that sales have dropped at a faster rate than with SA on the PS2. In fact, IV has only outsold SA by 500k copies in Europe in the first 3 weeks and that's taking into account BOTH systems (360 plus PS3)!

This indicates to me that most who intended to buy it, have already done so. Don't forget the limited base. It can surely grow, but April sales for the 360 in the US were a pathetic 188k units and 187k (even with GTA IV coming out at the end of the month). Compare this with the 714k units of Wii sold (nearly 2x both systems combined). Ouch!

It's still early, so let's see how it levels out. Look at SAs #'s on the PS2. It pounded out the sales week in and week out. IV will struggle to keep up IMO.

"R* is probably only making about
$15-20 max per unit"

Doubt it they are no small developer that gets screwed by the publisher. 60$ per game 10 dollar for Sony, 12 dollar for the seller: leaves 38$. The 100 million include ads etc. so worstcase 30 * 8m = 240 million will have made them more money than every other game. And this after three weeks. Ridiculous.

Well, a userbase can certainly grow over time, can't it? To say there are 12 million PS3s and 19 million Xbox 360s in the same sentence as the number of PS2s that have been sold (which is of course a much slower growing number then the current generation consoles), is ridiculous.

We can, by your numbers as of the San Andreas launch, estimate that the PS2 sells about 15 million a year. An impressive sum. Now, we almost have to do an anti-extrapolation with the PS3, which is a better console for comparison since it's selling faster than the 360. So, if we look at PS3 sales for 2007, it's at approximately 7.5 million, and it's doing quite a bit better this year. What we're looking at is a significant increase of userbase for the next 2 consoles leading up to the 2008 holiday season.

Also, remember that with smaller userbases comes smaller sales, but also larger attach rates. The Gamecube's top selling game and the Xbox's top selling game had a lot higher attach rate than San Andreas to the PS2's userbase. Of course, this is all a proven fact given that a larger userbase comes with more casual users.

So while Grand Theft Auto IV might not sell as much as the PS2 iterations, we're still looking at very large sales. And yes, the humongous development costs and licensing fees will take away from that. It's a shame, as Take 2 needs lots of money to fight away EA.

Ahh well, just don't get too snippy now.

Mont, I guess you can't read either. Nowhere in my post did I state or make the assumption that the number of PS2s on the market now (127M) is the same number as was in 2004. Your own inference, right?

127M is the number of PS2s sold through 2007. You can check out Wikipedia for verification. It's a number backed up by numerous other sites as well (too many to list).

BTW, at the time San Andreas was released there were between 70-80M PS2s on the market worldwide.

My numbers can be backed up and you can't provide any contradictory evidence. Perhaps, you should save your own face.

MontanaHatchet posted 21/05/2008, 09:48
So Vgcgamer, what you're telling me is, that you're fabricated number of Playstation 2s sold so far (127 million) is equal to the amount of PS2s that had been sold back when San Andreas launched back in 2004?

I can't look up the exact number right now, but next time, try to read and think before you post. You could really save face.

vgcgamer posted 21/05/2008, 08:14
Kyros, you must not understand much about business. You didn't read my post. R* is probably only making about $15-20 max per unit after everyone gets paid. Initial investment was ENORMOUS (100 million) and that is much, much more than San Andreas. At $20 net profit per unit, this amounts to $160 million net. Sounds great, but you have to subtract the $100M in dev costs. IV has a LONG, LONG way to go to even get close to San Andreas (sold 21.5M units so far according to R*). I doubt IV will be able to keep up with the much smaller PS3 and 360 base.

Sales of next-gen hardware have been pretty pathetic (Only 12M PS3s and 19M 360s out there. By comparison there are over 127M PS2s!). Next time read and think before you speak.

LOL they sold over 8 in words eight million copies in 3 weeks. I have the slight suspicion that they are satisfied. Unbelievable.
Message | Report
vgcgamer posted 21/05/2008, 04:59
I don't know if R* is satisfied or not. With every sales a portion goes to MS or Sony for licensing fees. A portion goes to the retailer for specified amount bulit-in profit (meaning they are getting game at a wholesale price). Then there's the cost of boxing and shipping the game to retailers. Lastly, you have the cost to develop (100 million) plus any extra unaccounted costs.

EU is the real battle, MS are claiming its theirs with only 360 at the end, and Sony have the bundle.

PS3 will win, its userbase is only a million less, and there arent as many titles on the PS3, hence theyll drift towards GTA which is exactly that
