From The Press Release:
As everyone looks ahead to the possibilities in store for 2010, Nintendo of America is looking to extend the glow of the holidays with some fresh December sales information. The following items were announced by Nintendo President Satoru Iwata in Japan:
- Although official U.S. sales data for December and all of 2009 will be announced by the NPD Group on Jan. 14, it appears that U.S. consumers responded enthusiastically to Nintendo’s Wii™ home console in December. Nintendo estimates that December sales in the United States will exceed 3 million units.
- Nintendo estimates that the portable Nintendo DS™ lineup, including the Nintendo DSi™ video game system, set a new all-time calendar-year U.S. sales record for any console or hand-held system.
- Nintendo software also continued to perform well. Although the NPD Group will provide the full sales numbers for each game, Nintendo estimates that lifetime U.S. sales of New Super Mario Bros.™ Wii are approaching 4 million. The game, which is the first Super Mario Bros. game to include simultaneous four-player action, launched in the United States on Nov. 15.

“The millions of people who bought Nintendo hardware during the holidays can look forward to enjoying great games on those systems now and in the future,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks for Nintendo DS, and Wii Fit Plus and New Super Mario Bros. Wii are all currently providing Nintendo fans with amazing experiences and fun adventures for the whole family.”
VGChartz Wii figures for December come in at 3.4 million for the Americas - this implies around 3 million units sold in the US, very much in line with Nintendo's figures, ending with 10.5 million for 2009. Also of note coming off of the Nintendo DS's biggest week to date, it sold 12.5 million for 2009 in the Americas, which would set the record for biggest sales for any console or handheld.
Nintendo had previously announced it sold 550,000 Wiis during Black Friday week in the United States, down from 800,000 Wiis during Black Friday week 2008. Nonetheless, with such a strong December, Nintendo has managed to sell almost exactly the same number of Wiis in October-December 2009 in the United States as it did during October-December 2008.

I wonder how many millions the pirates made on the Wii.
Not a very Happy New Year for developers like Capcom, Sega and EA.
I wonder if the market is saturated enough to where people will/ will not go out and buy another console if they already have one.
Can we average out how much each console will end at for this Gen ( let's use 5 years time span).
GCN,XBX,PS2 total was aprx 150 Mil units sold ( in the 5 years)
Wii,PS3,360 total to date 131 Mil (so maybe this gen will end with 200+ Mil?)
Even if the 360 ends at 50Mil, PS3 at 60 to 70 Mil, and wii at 90+mil. However we look at it, Ninty can't lose at the end of this Gen.
This year will be interesting to see if Natal drives more sales or turns into a flop. I'm expecting MS to Announce their new console this year, well the formal announcement and the spec sheet etc. But keep the 360 around as it has held it's own. If not this year but next year 101%.
Wii need back off for Xboosoonyist fans, call 911 ^_^.
GO WIIIIIIIIIIIII GO DSSSSSSSS GO NINTENDOOOOO.
BATMAN.
I remember when the PS3 had the price cut and some people said that it was Nintendo Wii's end, now i say, where are those who said that????
Kenriyoku, exactly.
No, I'm comparing month 27-38, the year ending in the 38th month, for Wii and PS2 in an aligned launch in the USA market.
@the Source: HUH? Month 27-38? You mean month 27-28?
When most people was spelling out doom and gloom for the Wii, I was looking at their extreme projections for the HD consoles and gloating and going 'uh...but you do realize the Wii is still vastly outselling those numbers, right?'
Its announcements like this that add that needed dose of mineral oil to their victory champagne.
All hail the King!!
The king still stand still
Poor Sonyerz, i believe they are sitting in a corner just looking at the floor with a shy face as the Super Play gets punched by Nintendo . . .
Wiiiiiiii, i have waited for that moment since 2001 with the Game Cube ! ! !
And i have enjoyed it again and again since 2006 =)
not to be a party pooper, but the wii was slowing down big time before the holiday season. january numbers are going to be important
@Kenology
I know, but we can always have some hope...
Good Job Wii! Congrats Ninty and Wii will outsell Ps2!
The Wii is a monster.
@atma:
News like this only makes the hater even more embittered and ENRAGED!
Holy cow! 2009 was definitely the year of Nintendo with all these records smashing. Congratz to Ninty.
Also I hope this will put an end to all these ''Wii is a fad'' or ''Wii is for kidzzz'' haters.
Another record smashed by the Wii?
Die Wii HD, Die
This puts Wii at about 8.9m in Month 27-38 in the United States. PS2 was about 7.1m in Month 27-38 in the United States.
I'm so glad that the company that tried something different, innovative and unique is not only doing well but is kickin @ss. I really think this will change our industry for the better and has broken the boring stale industry from last gen. Now the future is so bright for gaming that we gotta wear shades :)
@TheSource says:
Nintendo doesn't need NPD, they've got Siras - google it.

I did what Source said and here's what I found about Siras:

Nice.
Nice one there.
But you know for all those other people out there, they want to see the NPD report so they can run around in the streets naked o_O
Very nice sales!! Wii not a fad afterall. Lots of people should apologize and admit they were wrong. I will be the first.
Dear Nintendo, I am sorry I shrugged off the Wii as a fad that nobody would buy consistently for the entire 7th generation. I am also sorry for calling the "wii" name dumb and although I still prefer "Revoloution" the wii name has grown on me.
Sincerely,
BoneyBoy

O_O

so can we say that Nintendo has done a great job this gen. Officially they have done what most of us didn't think possible.
This so called fad will end some day, just make sure Metroid M and all the rest of the great games are released first : )
At least we have something to build on, I can see Ninty making a SMB coop online, doesn't have to be 4 players but online mario party etc.
the future is looking bright.
Congrats Ninty!!!
Awesome numbers no matter how you spin it.
Truly the kings of gaming, home or handheld.
Looks like combined Nov and Dec Wii sales in the Americas will be roughly the same between '08 and '09. '08 had a bigger November, '09 a bigger December.
Just saw the adjustment to MSMBWii numbers. That puts it over CODMW2 (360 WW) for the week ending 12/26. Not bad for a 2D game going up against one of the Biggest games released this year.
HAHAHAHA!Awesome
:p
@llewdebkram
You better not since I was thinking about doing that but you will get flamed by jelous people, it's like putting a match to a puddle of petrol, you will cause anger, just sit back and enjoy watching Nintendo's success with a glass of Bailyes like I'm doing now.
On-topic- Well done Iwata, I bet your wallet is very difficult to close.
I love Nintendo.
Congratulations on (consistently) showing those other guys who's boss!
Well also seems Wii will break PS2's record as the biggest December a home console. Back in December 2002, PS2 sold 2.7 million. Seems like Wii will beat that according to this as they are estimating 3 million for the month.
I think that could be considered 'a little bit good'.
I might just have to revisit some of the websites that were discussing the doom of Nintendo with the DS and Wii, I fancy a good chuckle.
My goodness.
Damn
Madness?
No....
THIS IS NINTENDOMINATION
3+ million Wiis and 4million NewSMBWii ?!!
MADNESS!! :O
Im the only one who believe those numbers include last week sales?
So the DS peaked in its 5th year in the Americas.
Awesome
Stupid Wii Fad , lol. yeah It did sell like a god for 3 strait years but thats just cuz of uninmformed gram grams playing teh Whee Bowling.
And dont get meh STARTED on Teh Pogeymons! 3+ Million jump on that sinking fad ship in japan alone? When will people learn that just beacuse The recent Generation of Pokemon titles is actually selling more ITS STILL A SHORT TERM FAD!
XD
Well, Finnally we see what Wii looks like when its not supply constrained. Looks like that really was as big of an Issue as people hyped it to be. Of course the price cut helps some too,.
Looks like the supply Issue Really wasnt overplayed in the last two years. Fi
NSMBwii was just adjusted up by 400,000 in North America, incredible sales.
i wonder how long this fad will last. lol can people still call it a fad. i wonder
Like Inigo13 said, Nintendo is talking about SOLD, not shipped. Nintendo is the only console maker that has already stated the sold numbers only, and not the shipped numbers. Microsoft used to state shipped, but eventually followed Nintendo's lead and now states sold. Sony was the last holdout of the big 3 who states shipped units. I'm assuming that's because the shipped numbers are always larger, and make the PS3 and PSP look better since they're losing the sales wars this generation.
"assuming some shipped stock is still on shelves. "
Nintendo is not reporting shipped numbers is this press release. They're reporting sold to consumer.
so NSMB is now undertracked a bit in EU and NA, wow!
@wiistation360
True, but those numbers are probably abysmal.
If I am not mistaken, there is one more week of sales data to be included in December's NPD numbers. (Dec 27th through Jan 2nd)
wow ioi you are SPOT ON
well done!
@Paul
That's sharp! my bad =)
Also, vgchartz has the wii at just over 3 million for all of North America for December while nintendo is predicting over 3 million for just the States. Looks like Nintendo really did well this Christmas in North America.
I thought the numbers for NSMBwii might be a bit low since it's constantly selling out and probably hard to track. I was out today and didn't see a single copy in stores, it is quite hard to find online as well.
How does this compare with VGC numbers? (i'm too lazy to chack as my name suggests)...
Anyway, great numbers for Ninty
we have 3.1 million for december in US btw, that's excellent.
4 million NSMBW?????????
omg that's even more than we have :|
