The Top 10 Games on WiiWare/VC - August 2009 - Sales & Statistics - News

by VGChartz Staff , posted on 10 September 2009 / 10,469 Views

Following on yesterday's media release of the top selling iPhone games, FADE (Forecasting and Analyzing Digital Entertainment, LLC) has provided us with a media sample of its August report for WiiWare and Virtual Console.

There are currently over 200 WiiWare titles and 500 Virtual Console titles available worldwide (though not all are available in every region). Despite the greater number of Virtual Console titles available, according to FADE, August 2009 marks the first month where WiiWare revenue exceeded Virtual Console revenue - thanks mostly to the increased price points of WiiWare games.

The greater number of Virtual Console titles available would also indicate that each individual title is earning more revenue on WiiWare. To illustrate this point, FADE has provided the following graphs showing the distribution of monthly revenue for each service.

The graphs indicate that it's easier to make money on WiiWare due to lower competition and higher accepted price points. However, since WiiWare games also require a more significant development budget, the likelihood of profitability is not necessarily greater for WiiWare. Regardless, both markets are top-heavy, with most of the revenue going to a small percentage of titles, and two-third of all WiiWare titles bringing in less than $25,000 a month worldwide.

FADE also provided the top 10 titles worldwide for both WiiWare and Virtual Console:

I thought that World of Goo would be up there on WiiWare titles.

@trestres

maybe to give more spce for third parties? or maybe to give more attnetion to wiiware. i remember when they first announced wiiware they said they wanted the attention to be on small indie devs. Hence the Wii are Wiiware series

I wonder: if Nintendo did more to promote WiiWare and Virtual Console, would sales go up significantly? Or is the situation similar on Live (which Microsoft promotes fairly well)?

Oh, and boooo at Majora's low sales!

I think the VC prices should be a lower by 100-200 pts each, and probably by the same amount for most of the WW games. There are too many WW games in the 1000-1500 pt range. $10-15 is too much for people when they can buy great disk-based Wii games online for $20 or less with free shipping and no tax typically. Also, used games can be had for $15.

I've got a funny feeling that we might know one or two of these people at FADE. ;P

There is way too much Pokemon on that WiiWare chart.

Hmm...I don't know if this is good or bad or what. I mean the majority of titles fall into the lowest brackets, but as it's WiiWare, i don't know if it's all that bad?

Wow, great charts, well, except for Pokemon took over everything. Seriously, the WW charts don't need 6 RPGs. It looks like Japan is owning the WW charts.

I wonder why Nintendo stopped releasing 1st party VC games. There are still a lot of great games that need to come out, but now they release 1st party VC games like every 6 months.
