Wow, a new Metroidvania Castlevania. They even brought back the old Castlevania logo. Hopefully the anime revived interest in the game series to where Konami will support it regularly.

I suspect that M2's Castlevania compilations have also helped.

If nothing else, Konami seems to have realized the financial value of their gaming legacy, with all of the collections of MGS, CV, Contra, TMNT, Bomberman, and Suikoden they've recently released. I keep hoping for a 3-D CV collection myself. Konami is actually a huge company in Japan with a market cap larger than any Japanese video game company other than Sony or Nintendo, but video games are only one line of business for them, and not as lucrative as their health clubs or gambling machines. But they do seem to understand that sitting on their video game legacy is leaving money on the table.

I don't know. I was digging the new look. I dont like things to stay too stagnant because its would be like playing the same game over and over. One of my favorite things about Zelda are the different artistic interpretations of the character and world. Keeps it fresh over time.

I’m very happy to hear about this, but the art style has me worried. The colors just look bland and uninteresting. The DS cartoon art style is still good enough for me and I would have prefered a vibrant fun atmosphere. This is giving me Hallow Knight vibes which appears to have had a negative influence on this game’s development

Castlevania deserves a new 3D game.

Sigh. Another legendary IP that Komani couldn't even bother developing themselves. What the hell are they, these days? Just a logo?

Does it matter? As long as the games are good, who cares who makes them?

They're actually a huge conglomerate in Japan. They own health clubs and manufacture gambling equipment, as well as TCGs. I've seen Konami gyms when I was there. The only video game affiliated companies in Japan that have larger market caps than Konami are Sony and Nintendo. Video games are just the facet of them that is the best known in the West, and they pulled back on those because they didn't make the same money as their other ventures. For all the flack they got over Kojima Productions, Metal Gear games were expensive to make and didn't give Konami the same ROI as competing franchises like Resident Evil make for Capcom.

So Japanese people don't see the word Komani and think video games, anymore? When did that happen? They use to be juggernauts. Heck, they developed the entire GBA trilogy in the 21st century, and those were highly successful and critically acclaimed. Plus MGS etc. How could they have fallen so far so fast?

Yu-Gi-Oh! and pachislot games are far more profitable. Metal Gear games were expensive to make and Kojima was apparently not judicious in spending Konami's money. From a purely financial standpoint, Konami are stronger than ever.

The best thing that can be said about Konami, is that the Castlevania anime, as well as re-releases of their classics, have made Konami's leaders realize that they do have a well-known legacy in gaming that can be exploited for profit and to keep their name known to Western audiences. Part of this is likely down to the successful kickstarter games like Bloodstained and Eiyuden Chronicles from former Konami alumni that clearly reference the games the creators worked on at Konami. Right after Eiyuden Chronicles got a firm release date, Konami announced the Suikoden collection, for example. The Suikoden Collection appears to have been reasonably successful, as it somewhat overshadowed its spiritual successor, Eiyuden Chronicles. But when it comes to making new games, they've chosen to outsource much of the work rather than do it themselves, which is honestly the way of a lot of studios in this day and age. They aren't likely to hire Koji Igarashi as anything but a consultant, and as for Kojima, it's safe to say that both parties pretty much scorched and salted the earth between them.

Thanks for taking the time to write all that up. Very enlightening, if not terribly depressing. The internal teams at Konami use to be among the very best the industry had to offer. I can turn around right now, scan my rows of carts from the 8/16-bit era and see their name on dozens upon dozens of some of the greatest games ever made. I wish that was still the case.

Konami’s retreat from gaming has been breathtaking, to say the least. They were strong developer until well into the PSWii60 era, and then they went scorched earth on Kojima Productions, but even Lords of Shadow was outsourced to MercurySteam.
