by William D'Angelo , posted on 18 October 2025 / 15,648 Views

The VGChartz sales comparison series of articles are updated monthly and each one focuses on a different sales comparison using our estimated video game hardware figures. The charts include comparisons between the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, as well as with older platforms. There are articles based on our worldwide estimates, as well as the US, Europe, and Japan.

This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the Nintendo Switch 2 and PlayStation 5.

The Nintendo Switch 2 launched in June 2025 and the PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup.

Switch 2 Vs. PS5 Worldwide:

Gap change in latest month: 363,926 - Switch 2

Total Lead: 3,043,364 - Switch 2

Switch 2 Total Sales: 8,160,186

PlayStation 5 Total Sales: 5,116,822

August 2025 is the 3rd month that the Nintendo Switch 2 has been available for. During the latest month, the Switch 2 has outsold the PlayStation 5 by 0.36 million units when you align the launches. The Switch 2 is ahead of the PS5 by 3.04 million units.

The 3rd month for the Switch 2 is August 2025, while for the PS5 it is January 2021. The Switch 2 has sold 8.16 million units, while the PS5 sold 5.12 million units during the same timeframe.

The PlayStation 5 sold 79.09 million units to date. The Switch 2 is currently 70.93 million units behind the lifetime sales of the PS5.

Due to severe supply constraints the PS5 should lose this up until month 24. If PS5 beats Switch 2 on any month before month 24 it's not a good sign for Switch 2

Supply constraints isn't the only reason PS5 is losing against the Switch 2. It would be selling more if it were competing against a console no one cared about, and that's not the case. The Switch 2 is attractive, whereas by the its hybrid nature or by the games it is and will be receiving. There are merits on the Switch 2's side for it to be selling more than the PS5

All I was doing was saying that up until month 24 was severely supply constrained. very severely. You can see what happens on the graph after month 24 as that's when Sony had better supply. I had no intention of arguing with anyone on here. I don't think Switch 2 will sell worse than a supply constrained PS5 but if it does, well that's not good is it

I also had no intention of arguing. I just brought up another reason for the graph looking like it is now

I know, but Switch 2 beat PS5 by 364k units so you didn't need to defend Switch 2. My post was specifically about IF we ever see it sell less, which it didn't.

The PS5 isn’t supply constraint anymore, and is drilling at the same pace as the PS4 which is behind the switch 1. So I’ll let you do the math

Any day now, The Cliff™ is coming for both the Switch 1 and Switch 2. Any day now for the past 9 years.

Oh my gosh, everything is not a good sign for Switch 2, the console could launch with 10M sales in the first month and the doomsayers would still be counting not good signs 😅

Sorry if my post came across negative It's just interesting to see how Switch 2 will fare against a supply constrained PS5 but it will probably win

Early PS5 sales were artificially inflated because of scalping. Had scalping not been a thing, PS5 would have sold a few million units and there would have been plenty on shelves. Remember that picture in the UK of PS5s piled high in a warehouse by scalpers?

The same was true of the Xbox Series X - how else does one explain that console's ludicrously high early sales? Fast forward a few years and Series X sales have totally collapsed.

Switch 2 sales have been high because people actually wanted one.

It's not rocket science.

Not only that but COVID helped the PS5 and Xbox Series since a lot of people were indoors during that time and wanted entertainment. The new game consoles coming out would peak a lot of people's interest. Scalpers took advantage of that.

I don't really see how that's necessarily a bad sign for the switch 2. Even with supply constraints the ps5 was still selling a healthy amount most months and is among the fastest selling consoles in its first 2 years. That and the holiday period hits at different times for each console, the ps5 hits the holiday's when the switch 2 is at the typically low selling summer period. I expect the ps5 to outsell the switch during months 13-14.

Isn't Nintendo aiming to produce over 25 million Switch 2 units in its first fiscal year (ending March 2026)? That would cover roughly the first 9 months of the Switch 2's availability, putting it on pace to match the PS5's cumulative sales up through month 23, or am i wrong maybe?
