The VGChartz sales comparison series of articles are updated monthly and each one focuses on a different sales comparison using our estimated video game hardware figures. The charts include comparisons between the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, as well as with older platforms. There are articles based on our worldwide estimates, as well as the US, Europe, and Japan.

This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.

The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020, while the PlayStation 4 launched in November 2013. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do lineup.

Last year Xbox Series sold 7.5m, the Xbox One in 2016 sold 9.6m. It lost by 2.1m in launch aligned sales last year. Xbox Series is going to have to really turn it around to outsell the Xbox One, I don't think it's likely.

Sony announced PS5 had sold 50 million as of December 9, which leaves 3 weeks left of December. Though, as always when Sony releases their earnings report I will do any necessary adjustments.

I'm still going to wait for Sony's financial report before arguing. But it seems that this number is a bit low for the ps5, according to sony, the difference in sales between the ps4 and the ps5 was only 1 week

VGChartz focuses on the actual unit sold, not the Shipment.

Sony's financial report will showcase how many consoles were shipped to stores (which is sold), and VGChartz will showcase how many consoles were sold in stores to the consumer.
