Switch vs DS Sales Comparison - December 2022 - Sales

by William D'Angelo , posted on 07 February 2023 / 8,982 Views

The VGChartz sales comparison series of articles are updated monthly and each one focuses on a different sales comparison using our estimated video game hardware figures. The charts include comparisons between the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, as well as with older platforms. There are articles based on our worldwide estimates, as well as the US, Europe, and Japan.

This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo DS.

The DS launched in November 2004 in North America, December 2004 in Japan, and March 2005 in Europe, while the Nintendo Switch launched worldwide in March 2017. Therefore, the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup, which is why there are big increases and decreases.

Switch, passing by the Gameboy's dotted line: Hey there

And the Gameboy was a 12 year product. So actually the Switch sold twice as much every year versus the Gameboy. Sales per year we have:

DS > Switch > 2xGameboy

Now is the time for a 50$ price cut on the main model (30$ on the LITE), or it won't make it. Maybe announced tomorrow?

Before Zelda? No. It's staying full price until at least September.

that's a good point, they might keep it high until after Zelda goes on sale

Nintendo's sales are slowing a lot, a price cut would be good. The main model without OLED in particular. OLED has some life in it.

I don't think nintendo is that concerned to be the best selling. It's more a fan thing. And with regards to money made, they are doing very well. Software is doing insane too. And they wanna keep the small profit margin of the consoles

Obviously we know what happened now, but I agree. They did slash the price of 3ds early on, but I don't remember if they ever did it again. Wii u was floundering and they stuck to 300. I think what we might actually see is more bundles not just around Christmas.

Like to me, Zelda already made a billion dollars. Mario already made a billion dollars. And that's not hyperbole. Bundle those games.

This graph shows the DS beating the Switch more and more every year for 5 years straight.

Follow the valleys. Switch down to 1 million ahead. 6 million behind. 8 million behind. 11 million behind. And then finally 14 million. If the Switch beats the DS it will only be because Nintendo refused to replace it. Longer generation. Let's hope for new hardware announcement tomorrow! Over 6 years is a long time for Nintendo hardware.

What do you mean by "I'm not sure if people can read graphs"? Did people give you reasons to think otherwise?

Sure, a lot of people repeat "the switch is outselling the DS, or beating the DS" over and over

did you know it is getting farther and farther behind for 5 years?

CourageTCD Garrus (on 07 February 2023)

I think people say the Switch WILL outsell the DS (considering the Nintendo extending its lifespan)

I pointed out the DS outsold the Switch for 5 years, and actually sold more and more compared to the Switch, getting farther ahead of the Switch, look at the graph. Now I'm a hater?

We need new Nintendo hardware. That doesn't make you a hater. I want Nintendo to be better. Brand loyalty is with Nintendo, not the Switch.

Wait so by that metric, the ps2 shouldn't count. It has an unusually long shelf life and that's why it's the best selling console of all time.

Garrus Eagle367 (on 09 February 2023)

not true, it did not have a longer shelf life, the PS3 came out quite quickly

The PS2 had a 6 year lifespan. The Switch has already hit 6 years. PS2's lead in sales per year is already assured.

The PS3 had a 7 year lifespan. The PS3 was the console with the longest lifespan (after the Gameboy).

You do know ps2 kept selling and never woukd have been best selling without DVD player and long shelf life. DS easily trounced ps2 for the first 6 years
