Switch vs PS4 Sales Comparison - September 2022 - Sales

by William D'Angelo , posted on 01 November 2022 / 6,618 Views

The VGChartz sales comparison series of articles are updated monthly and each one focuses on a different sales comparison using our estimated video game hardware figures. The charts include comparisons between the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, as well as with older platforms. There are articles based on our worldwide estimates, as well as the US, Europe, and Japan.

This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the Nintendo Switch and the PlayStation 4.

The PlayStation 4 launched in November 2013, while the Nintendo Switch launched worldwide in March 2017. Therefore, the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup, which is why there are big increases and decreases.

Switch should definitely clear 120 million by the end of the year. Then it's officially top 3 hardware.

Top 3 is certain by the end of the year. After that is a long climb to the DS and PS2.

A year ago, I thought it was going to be close. But I'm starting to doubt Nintendo will wait long enough. The switch would need 2 full years with no word of a replacement at this rate. I think it's going to cap out at about 145 unless the replacement comes out no sooner than March 2025.

My gut is telling me the Switch successor will launch in March 2024 or Holiday 2024. That would be 7 or 7.5 years after the release of the Switch.

Honestly, it really depends on if there is a Switch Pro revision next year or not. If they do one next year, I can see them holding off a successor until 2025.

I'm actually thinking September 2024. Sell out, restock, sell out again. March was good for the switch because they needed a win before the end of that fiscal year. But I don't know if they'll do it again.

My gut is telling me that a new generation will be announced soon and will release much sooner than people think. As early as May 2023. Although, I think Switch 2 will be unlike previous generations where Nintendo burns out the previous console and then starts anew. Rather, Switch 2 will add to the Switch family rather than start a new one from scratch. If my gut is correct, Switch won’t burn out with the coming of Switch 2, but fade away over the coming years while as Switch models become the minimum standard.

For those unfamiliar with my madness, but the fade away over burning out thing isn’t some new convenient thing, but has been discussed on this forum since around the time the Switch launched. This is because of the 3DS experiment as well as the architecture used for the Switch chipset which makes iterational hardware much easier than previous generations.

Just a thought, you don’t have to agree with me.

I don't know how much software they've got in the pipeline to carry momentum after Tears of the Kingdom. PS5 and Xbox are at a point where I'm no longer doing a double-take when I see them on store shelves.

I don't know either. But I'm usually pretty surprised with what they have coming next. Especially since they're keeping the release schedule so near in the future. Obviously we don't have all the information, so it could be any time.

It's probably more wishful thinking on my part. I hope they wait long enough to have strong hardware at a good value with a steady supply. That's why it seems like a little later would be better than sooner.

That's my hope, too, that the next Switch will be the beneficiary of a SoC that really sings, yet is inexpensive enough to fit within Nintendo's budgetary concerns. Their goal has always been to balance power with profitability and mass-market prices. Competition is only going to get more fierce, with the PS5 showing signs that Sony will be able to sell one to anybody who wants one.

Yeah. And I don't want Nintendo releasing it if they don't have the capacity to really pump them out. Supply is always going to be limited at launch and holidays, but hardware should be readily available the rest of the year.

Agreed. The PS5 and XSX have seemed to be stillborn platforms thus far, in part because only scalpers seemed to have them for so long due to supply constraints. I think it's affected the games released on them to a degree. It would be nice if the next Switch could charge out of the gate with all guns blazing and enough to sell to anybody who wants one.

I feel like there's one obstacle that could be insurmountable though. People seem to buy hardware for the sake of getting the shiny new object. That wasn't always the case. It's almost like demand is through the roof without any reason. I think that was part of the trouble with the PS5 and series.

So I do worry that unless Nintendo plans to produce 20 million units in the first year, we'll all be stuck in scalper hell.

I think may 2024 for a successor if no pro comes but sometime in 2025 if pro does come. And I think Mario kart 9 will be a release game for the switch 2 or whatever it's called. The switch can still do this even with a successor. The possibilities are all there. Though this holiday and next year are gonna be crucial. We'll see where switches baseline is after the holidays.

It's getting interesting. I read an article where the latest Famitsu charts show that the PS5 outsold the Switch. It was only by a couple hundred units, but still.

I feel that is an anomaly more than a trend. We shall see
