PS5 Ships 19.3 Million Units as of March 2022, PS4 Ships 117 Million - Sales

by William D'Angelo , posted on 10 May 2022 / 5,711 Views

Sony Interactive Entertainment in its financial results announced it has shipped 19.3 million PlayStation 5 consoles as of March 31, 2022.

With 19.3 million PlayStation 5 consoles shipped through the end of March 2022 that means 2 million units were shipped from January to March. This is down from 3.3 million for the same quarter a year ago. Demand for the console remains well above what Sony is able to supply.

For reference, the PlayStation 4 had shipped 2.3 million units in the same quarter for a lifetime total of 22.4 million units shipped as of March 31, 2015. This puts the PS5 behind shipped PS4 units by 3.1 million units.

Sony shipped 0.1 million PlayStation 4 consoles for the quarter, which is down from 1.0 million for the same quarter a year ago. Lifetime PlayStation 4 shipments are currently at 117.0 million units.

PS5 Ships 19.3 Million Units as of March 2022, PS4 Ships 117 Million

There were a total of 70.5 million games sold on the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 for the quarter. This is up 9.1 million from 61.4 million during the same period a year earlier. Digital sales accounted for 71 percent of software sales.

There were 14.5 million first-party games sold across the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4. This is up 6.6 million from 7.9 million first-party games sold a year ago.

The number of PlayStation Plus subscribers is now at 47.4 million, which is down 0.2 million from 47.6 million from the same quarter a year ago. There were 106 million monthly active users, a drop from 109 million a year ago.

Sony's Game & Network Services Segment for the quarter ending March 31, 2021, reported revenue increase 0.8 percent year-over-year to 666.5 billion yen ($5.11 billion), while operating income increased 175.4 percent to 87.3 billion yen ($0.67 billion).

Sony's Game & Network Services Segment for the 2021 fiscal year, reported revenue increase 3.0 percent year-over-year to 2,739.8 billion yen ($21.01 billion), while operating income increased 1.3 percent to 346.1 billion yen ($1.65 billion).

The forecast for the 2021 fiscal year expects revenue to increase percent to 3,660 billion yen ($28.07 billion, while operation income will decrease to 305 billion yen ($2.34 billion).

Sony expects an increase in revenue of hardware, peripheral devices, and non-first-party titles including add-on content, which will be impacted by foreign exchange rates.

Sony expects to ship around 18 million PlayStation 5 consoles in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2023. This is an increase over 11.5 million units in the previous fiscal year that ended March 31, 2022.

"Sales are expected to significantly increase year-on-year mainly due to an expected increase in sales of hardware and peripheral devices, an expected increase in sales of non-first-party titles including add-on content and the impact of foreign exchange rates," reads the report from Sony.

"Operating income is expected to decrease year-on-year due to an expected increase in costs, mainly for game software development at existing studios, and the recording of approximately 44 billion yen in expenses associated with acquisitions expected to be completed in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2023, including Bungie, Inc., partially offset by the impact of the above-mentioned expected increase in sales of non-first-party titles and an expected increase in sales of first-party titles."

Those are insane numbers!

Sony has got to be happy about that. And those game sales numbers ? Impressive.

I must be a dinosaur but I still can't get over how the vast majority of game purchases are digital. Guess that's where we are headed, right?

Once again, awesome sales figures for Sony and I'm sure they are just going to keep crushing it in the future.

PS4 software could be around or exceeded 1.7 Billion units.
That's insane and it has the highest attach ratio ever and will remain for ages.

WHAT?!?!? Good lord that's an insane number! Not even Nintendo has ever reached a billion software units in sales. PlayStation would have beaten their own record with the PS2.

Wii and DS lifetime software fell just short of 1 billion (921m Wii, 948m DS), but it should be a foregone conclusion at this point that the Switch will be Nintendo's first console to do it. FY2021 Switch software sales hit a Nintendo record 235m, which was a 1.8% increase over FY2020. Switch software lifetime totals were at 822m as of March 31st 2022. So, Switch software will easily coast past 1 billion lifetime this fiscal year.

The link with the breakdown you put list software sales starting from FY2016, the PS4 released in November 2013.

By April 2021 the system already sold more than 1.5 billion units in software .

So yeah, it is close or exceeded the 1.7 billion units mark.

I really wonder how they expect to ship roughly 40% more PS5 in the next fiscal year compared to the last one. It feels a little bit utopian.

  • +3

Actually it's closer to 55 %. Will certainly be impressive if they manage it.

18 million for the fiscal year would be near peak PS4 sales numbers, and doing that when all analysts and foundries are saying to expect shortages to continue into 2023/2024, would be pretty extraordinary.

I’m skeptical this will be possible but they could know something we don’t

Looks like VGChartz was spot on again

18mil for the fiscal year is alot. Maybe these big shipments in Europe recently are a sign of stock improving.

  • +2

Yea, it seems very bold given the last FY, but one can hope that they know something we don't.

Does someone know how this compares to Xbox Series hardware sales?

victor83fernandes (on 12 May 2022)

VGCHARTZ is way off, they have numbers of 19.2 million by 23 April, as in, 3 weeks after the sony numbers.

I think you have been here long enough to understand that VGChartz estimates sell through, not sell in.

victor83fernandes Kakadu18 (on 15 May 2022)

I think you are here long enough to realize all ps5 consoles are sold to consumers as soon as they hit the market. You cant find a single console anywhere.

Kakadu18 victor83fernandes (on 16 May 2022)

There's a thread where several people were unable to understand that shipping takes weeks and that Sony counts a console as shipped as soon as it leaves their warehouses. Sell through is sold to customers, sell in is sold to retailers. When Sony gets an order from a retailer, the units they ship there count as shipped at departure, not when they reach their destination.
Because of this Sony counts a big amount of units as shipped that only reached shelves up to a month later. Therefore VGChartz estimates have been almost spot on and after adjustments are as close as they can get without further public info. Shipped does not equal sold, ever.

You're still not accepting reality, all, I mean every single one of those ps5 consoles are basically sell through. I have no idea where you can get a console and be waiting for 3 weeks? Where can I do that? Nowhere that's where.
The only consoles you can find are overpriced on ebay, but those were already sold to consumers, as the ebay users are people.

What? Who's waiting for 3 weeks? You seriously didn't understand anything I've said. No matter how often and how detailed the whole process is described to you, you fail to understand anything at all.
Arguing with you is a waste of time.
Don't respond to me anymore.

Pretty good numbers although you still can't find a PS5 anywhere unless you get very lucky. They really need to find a way to the resolve shortage issues, they could have sold so much more.

  • 0

Not only that, but I know of people who just gave up and moved to PC or Xbox, so the shortage will affect consumer market long term.

I would like to know about the current sales figures for God of War 2018. According to the report, until August 2021, 19.5 million were sold. With the launch on pc this number should be close to 25 million

Kakadu18 jvmkdg (on 10 May 2022)

It seems like they didn't provide any software updates.

So VGCHARTZ numbers are way off for the ps5.

Phewph! I was getting scared of the us/UK beating us. But all is good in Japan I see. Sony still number 1 and 2.

What do you mean exactly? Sony can't hold a candle to Nintendo in Japan.
