This monthly series compares the combined aligned sales of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S with the combined aligned sales of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
The 14th month for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S is December 2021, while for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One it is December 2014. This does mean the holiday periods for all four consoles are lined up.
Gap change in latest month: 109,803 – PS4 & XOne
Gap change over last 12 months: 1,277,742 – PS5 & XSX|S
Total Lead: 1,192,392 - PS5 & XSX|S
Total Combined PS5 and Xbox Series X|S Sales: 29,665,820
Total Combined PS4 and Xbox One Sales: 28,473,428
In December 2021, the gap grew in favor of the combined sales of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One when compared to the aligned launch of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S in the last month by 109,803 units. In the last 12 months, the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S lead has grown by 1.28 million units. The PS5 and Xbox Series X|S lead by a combined 1.19 million units.
The PS5 and Xbox Series X|S in their first 14 months sold a combined 29.67 million units, while the PS4 and Xbox One have sold a combined 28.47 million units. It took until month 16 for the PS4 and Xbox One to sell as many units as the current PS5 and Xbox Series X|S sales.
The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One have sold a combined 167.04 million units after 98 months.

"would be" is the key phrase, but it's not. Basically XB picking up the slack and keeping both ahead of the previous gen total.

It might be thanks to.the Xbox lead, but also simply because the PS5 can kind a keep up with the PS4. Don't forget that the PS5 sold over 6 million units more than the Xbox Series, that's almost 100k each week. Next holiday this gen will probably fall behind to retake the crown in 2023
