July 2020 is the 41st month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for in Europe. During the latest month, the Switch grew its lead by 318,178 units when you align the launches of it with the PlayStation 3. In the last 12 months, the Switch has outsold the PlayStation 3 by 903,679 units. The Switch is currently ahead of the PlayStation 3 by 1.33 million units.
The PlayStation 3 launched in Europe in March 2007, while the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017. Therefore, the holiday periods for the two consoles do lineup.
The 41st month for the Nintendo Switch in Europe is July 2020 and for the PlayStation 3 it is July 2010. The Switch has sold 16.34 million units, while the PlayStation 3 has sold 15.01 million units during the same timeframe. The PlayStation 3 did not reach current Switch sales until month 45.
The PlayStation 3 sold 34.99 million units in Europe during its lifetime. The Switch needs to sell another 18.65 million units to catch up to the lifetime sales of the PlayStation 3.

I think the switch will win in the end
Was extremely close until recently, but the Switch lead will only be increasing in the near future. The PS3 peaked pretty late though, so it might gain some ground again later on. Might be close again towards the end.
