The number of PC and PlayStation games sold in Japan increased 13 percent to 21 million in Japan in the first half of 2026, according to a new report by Sensor Tower.

In Japan, Capcom was the top publisher in terms of units sold when you combine PC and PlayStation. Square Enix came in second, followed by PlayStation in third, Bandai Namco in fourth, and Sega in fifth. It should be noted the report does not include Nintendo.

Resident Evil Requiem was the best-selling game on PlayStation in Japan, while it was Meccha Chameleon on Steam.

Worldwide, Electronic Arts was the top publisher when you combine PC, PlayStation, and Xbox. PlayStation came in second, Capcom in third, Xbox Game Studios in fourth, and Ubisoft in fifth.

Resident Evil Requiem had a strong first month with an estimated 2.6 million units sold on Steam worldwide. This is higher than the estimated 2.1 million units the Resident Evil 4 sold on Steam.

"Resident Evil Requiem delivered the franchise’s strongest first-month performance on Steam, selling approximately 2.6 million units," said Sensor Tower. "The result underscores Steam’s growing importance to premium Japanese games, giving Capcom immediate access to a large global audience while extending the series beyond its traditional console strength."

Looking at Famitsu you wouldn't expect Playstation to be selliing north of 10million games a year, let alone in 6months

Whenever publishers have released region specific sales data for Japan, it has always been multiple times higher for PS5/PC games than the Famitsu number. Implying that Digital is very high, Famitsu under-track or PC has a much larger share in Japan than people think.

Even a game like Ghost of Tsushima, before it released on PC, officially sold 1m in Japan. While Famitsu had physical a bit under 500k. If this was actually accurate then GoT had a higher digital ratio in Japan than the worldwide number.
