Almost All of Top 100 PS4 Titles Will be Playable on PS5 at Launch - News
by William D'Angelo , posted on 08 August 2020 / 6,422 ViewsSony Interactive Entertainment system architect Mark Cerny earlier revealed the specs for their next generation console, the PlayStation 5.
Cerny also discussed backwards compatibility with the PlayStation 4 when it comes to the PS5. It appears not all PS4 games will be playable on the PS5 and games from older PlayStation consoles won't be playable on the PS5. Sony looked at the top 100 most payed PlayStation 4 titles and is looking to have most of them playable on the PS5 at launch.
"Results are excellent," said Cerny. "We recently took a look at the top 100 PlayStation 4 titles as ranked by play time, and we’re expecting almost all of them to be playable at launch on PlayStation 5."
The PlayStation 5 will launch in Holiday 2020.

"almost" isnt good enough, should have been all.
Also PS2,3 should have been mentioned too imo. Get it to work Sony.
Theres PC emulators that can do it, why cant you?
@haxxiy - I am getting the impression Series X's BC will have significantly greater support of X1's library. Then there is also the OG Xbox and 360 content. MS also seems to have quick saves that lets you jump between BC games while continuing your progress. Then we also saw Gears Ultimate became 4K by doubling the resolution both ways.
What MS is doing with BC looks amazing. Sony in comparison is treating it like an after thought thus far. Either that or they are hiding big news.
Yes Pug, years of effort from both Sony and AMD baking the logic of PS4 on the PS5 GPU is an after though, sure.
They might wanna find a way to make the older PS games work for backwards on PS5. Unless they (PS) purposely didn't add the older titles from previous PS consoles as to not eat into the PS Now territory. Unless it's the latter, I seriously doubt that we won't get older titles for bc in the future.
Hm. So this means that the popular games will take priority for BC. Hopefully they'll eventually get to the more niche stuff like Tearaway, Gravity Rush 1&2 and the Vanillaware games.
PS5: hey maybe your PS4 game will work
XSX: Your X1 game will work. And if it didn’t have HDR last gen, it gets it now. And if it’s X enhanced, you get that version. And if it’s got a Series X update, you get that free. Also all of the 360 games we supported still work. And if that 360 game has a 4K update, you get it. And the OG Xbox games work.
Seems like BC is an after thought for Sony. Maybe they won’t have their own version of Smart Delivery after all and will charge for remasters?
Yeah certainly is what we get from a several year effort to put the logic of PS4 on PS5 and boost, they decided that yesterday.
Oof. That's not the answer some were hoping for. Good thing I finally bought a PS4.
So here’s my understanding of the situation, based on the PS blog. ALL PS4 games will work on PS5 from day 1. However, only some will reap the benefits of the hardware, because the variable frequency will actually require developers to go in and patch their games if they want to make use of higher res, better frame rates, etc.
This basically sounds identical to PS4 Pro. Games like BloodBorne never made use of the hardware, and ran at the same settings as base PS4, with only very minor difference in the framerate, but it was still very much playable on Pro.
And I expect all high end 1st party to receive some boost to make marketing for the launch.
Eh, doesn't matter too much to me. Not like I was planning on getting rid of my PS4 Pro anyway.
Sounds like this BC thing isn't going great for Sony. People were hoping all Playstation consoles would be supported, which felt unrealistic. However, it turns out the supported PS4 titles is going to underwhelm at launch.
Clearly this is a difficult process and I would hold on to that PS4.
By People you are being pretty generous.
Morons then, call them what you want. Either way, the number of games supported at launch might just be a fraction of the library.
They are still testing more games so I guess they will continue to add more after launch.
No I wasn't refering to the term people versus moron, but the fact that you are trying to put a much larger amount of people than what really happened.
Ranked by playtime? If this "top 100" includes Indies then that's really bad. It would mean something like 50 BC PS4 games. 30 that are good.
Really though. Lots of people play fortnight, doesn't mean it's any good :)
It will be filled with COD and FIFA
It will be lots of shooters, GTAV, F2P games and certainly 1st party content.
Eeeerrr if they are the top 100 by playtime that would mean the best 100 for the general customer base.
I'm disappointed. Was expecting full bc from launch. I would like to see the list of these 100 games. I guess I will need to keep my PS4 in any case.
It have full BC, it is backed on the silicon, but since it is a different system (not full PS4 chip inside PS5) them they are still testing all the games and some popular ones that may not work may need a patch to.
My question is - when they say ps4 games will be playable, does this just mean digital versions or a normal ps4 disc? Hopefully your games saves (which are stored online) would be able to be saved from your ps4 and played on your ps5? If its the latter (for the 1st question) than i will look to get this console fairly early. Otherwise it will be a mid-gen purchase, same as my previous consoles.
When they say "we looked at the top 100 and almost all will be playable at launch" means that they tested those not that they patched those, so plenty more is already working but haven't been tested.
Don't fret, almost sure any revelant PS4 title will run fine on PS5.
People are comparing it to Xbox Series X. And this approach from Sony was worse than MS.
Xbox was planning this BC program for many years. If Sony plan on matching MS than its going to take time. This list will continue to grow however we shouldn't expect results over night.
Yes certainly XSX BC is more robust, that doesn't change the false information that less than 100 games will be on PS5 launch.
For the time he spent speaking praises for AMD focusing on making BC work for PS4, I would expect near perfect results for that system. The older generations thing was a bit of a pipe dream, but still, at very least I expected PS4 in full.
And how almost all tested titles isn't near perfect?
@DonFerrari - The initial statement wasn't clear and at the time this was posted, it very much read as "Almost all of the top 100 PS4 games are playable". This is a sad figure, my comment was geared towards that. Sony has since come out to clairify that they meant the whole library, but at the time that wasn't clear.
For me it was clear when they said the logic of PS4 was inside the silicon of PS5. But no problem if you got the message as confusing, seems like a lot of people thought the same even several publications.
