LONDON – 19th March 2009 - Microsoft today announced that sales of “Halo Wars” have reached more than one million units worldwide, making the exclusive Xbox 360 title the best selling real-time strategy game on any current generation console. With a revolutionary control scheme designed expressly for the Xbox 360 controller and a riveting story that takes “Halo” fans deeper into the “Halo” universe, “Halo Wars” is breaking new ground for the strategy genre by introducing a new wave of fans to strategy games and reminding existing fans why it’s so fun.
Set in the year 2525, “Halo Wars” takes players on a perilous journey through the famed “Halo” universe. As players take the command seat in the early, epic battles between the UNSC and Covenant, they will begin to unravel events 20 years before “Halo: Combat Evolved” that shaped the franchise into what it is today.
Since the game’s release throughout Asia on February 26 and subsequent launches in Europe and the Americas, fans around the world have been taking full advantage of “Halo Wars’” rich Xbox LIVE gameplay. To date:
· There have been more than 2.6 million multiplayer matches played
· More than 118 years of time has been spent in multiplayer matches on Xbox LIVE
· On average, more than 200,000 “Halo Wars” fans have taken up arms in battles between the UNSC and Covenant each day
· For more statistics and game information, fans can visit the official stats page at: http://www.halowars.com/stats/globalstats.aspx
But these initial explosive battles in “Halo Wars” are just beginning. Microsoft is working closely with partner and newly formed studio Robot Entertainment, which is comprised of “Halo Wars” and “Age of Empires” veterans from Ensemble Studios. More Halo Wars content is being prepared, so stay tuned.
“Halo Wars” is rated T for Teen by the ESRB and 16+ PEGI and is available worldwide. A demo is also available on Xbox LIVE in all LIVE enabled regions worldwide. For more information, visit Xbox.com/Halo or HaloWars.com.

you could slap halo onto anything and it is sure to sell.
Meh. Just like Halo before it, it is basically a new genre to console gamers, so there's no real basis for comparison.
The fact that it's getting scores like 6.5 in some publications (Gamespot) and 8-9 in others tell me that those 8-9's are seriously overrated (what publication is going to UNDER-rate a big name like Halo?).
Not so bad... It depends which way you look at it. As a console RTS, it's very good. As a Halo branded game, it's a bit on the weak side.
watever...
@point x, tom clancywars.... doesnt that already exist Tom Clancy's End War?
The game is amazing and deserves every copy sold hopefully it continues to sell so developers will use its formula and make better real time strategies
''wow ps3/360 fans are very happy with this thread; ha ha ha ha ..
halo wars made history in the RTS in consoles, and the nex:
kill zone wars. ......... maybe?????????????
call of duty wars.......maybe?????????????
tom clancywars........maybe?????????????
ist only the beginning baby,..
Shipped a million copies so far. Sell through would be around 70 to 80%. Gives it a 700k to 800k copies sold, in line with VGChartz.
Given that Halo Wars is a rip of the Command and Conquer series, it is amazing to me that it has the instant reputation as an Xbox360 game of a genre that is much better played, as history shows, on a PC, and at least five years ago at that. I have the game, and I am NOT impressed as yet since the theory of the game is demonstrably better as a PC game. OTOH, I will give Halo Wars the benefit of my doubt for the time being.
@Ventras I believe you said this about the 360 "I'll hang on a bit till they give 'em away for free, or perhaps even pay me to take one." So you should probably STFU about Halo Wars Gameplay!
If you were ever old school enough to be into Warcraft/Starcraft before the World of MMO then you should pick this up. 8.5 Gameplay and multiplayer is a 9, not to mention the cutscenes are theater quality. A great change up if you've been playing in the FPS, RPG genres. I really hope the RTS developers take note, cause I will be buying the next one on the market granted it is as quality/better than Halo Wars...
How can anyone still claim that FPS don't work on home consoles? That might have been accruate back in the mid-90s, but we have moved past this arguement. GoldenEye proved that FPS work on home consoles.
Great results for a great game.
@frybread
But both work
If it were Halo: Cooking Mama, it would be the most successful cooking game.
RTS on a console is as silly as FPS on a console.

Such a mediocre game shipping 1m. Wow. Brand power truly is a powerful thing. I wonder how many of the 1m (un)lucky owners would repeat their purchase, I know I won't.
The game is far from mediocre. The game has scored solid 8.0 - 9.0 scores from most of the game reviewers.

The game will reach 1 million sold faster then Resistance 2 and it's not even a FPS. Congrats to Ensemble and Microsoft of getting this game completed and proving to people that RTS can be done well on game consoles.

Remove the Halo name and it would have sell 1/10th of that.
Congratulations anyway, it's good for the RTS genre on consoles.
You could probably say the same thing of MGS IV or GoW. I doubt a RTS game for Killzone 2 would sell that many copies.
Grats, very tough pulling off a console rts.
The best RTS game in consoles, the name halo and one of the best history of all times in the games sell more fast...congratulation!my next game for purchase!
Impressive.
1 million much faster than expected. Sales to customers aren't far behind.
Whens the last time an RTs had these kind of sales?
Yes, the campagne is short and you can play only as UNSC-no Covenant and Flood.
The rest is very good and the best is UNSC and Covenant are very well balanced in multiplayer, but also very different. Its great fun , espeacially online.
Awesome numbers for an awesome game......congrats Halo Wars.
Great sales for Halo Wars. It would be nice to see RTS games get some more limelight on home consoles.
Good for you Halo Wars! Can we see another mil?
Cool, 1 mil is a nice number.
Halo name sells well
Not really my cup of tea but gratz :)
WOuhouuu !!

Great numbers...also, lol at okeydokey. Capcom does seem to overship everything.
Only?
I mean, we've got it at 830k as of the 14th.
Maybe it's just Capcom and Bethesda who overship everything...
And quick! ;)
That was unexpected. ;)
