That’s likely the reason Sony is using x86. It seems almost guaranteed that PS5 will be BC.

@estebxx. It's almost funny how much better the PS3 is a a media player than the PS4. It's the main reason I bought a 3rd super slim backup. I still use it for almost everything relating to movies and music.

When Japan is such a relatively small part of global sales though, I do not think that Sony minds if it continues to dominate Europe/ROTW and put up a solid fight for North America.

Sorry but no. PS4 took longer to release because the sales curve of PS3 took longer to decline due to the price taking longer to drop.

And why did it take longer to drop in price? Cause it was a financial disaster for Sony and costed them a ton of money, something like losing $200-$300 on every unit sold when it launched. It took them a long time to recoup those losses. But PS4 isn’t like that. It’s much more profitable for Sony. They don’t need to wait 8 years to release a new console this time. They’re in a lot better shape now.

We don't substitute HW for the sake of it. PS4 is selling great, so they won't replace it while SW is doing fantastic, no point in doing so.

That doesn’t make much sense. Sony was in complete domino mode with ps2 but that didn’t stop them from revealing PS3 in May 2005. Hell Ps2 hardware and software was still selling gangbusters when and after ps3 launched. Your “for the sake of it” doesn’t hold water.

ps3 released nov 2006, look at sales curve to see if sales of HW and SW weren't on decline already. Domination per domination PS2 was outselling X360 for like one full year after the other released.
A Company doesn't expend billion dollar on releasing new HW just cause.

It’s called looking ahead. You want to have something new on the horizon already for when your current product eventually does start to decline so you have something stronger to bring in profits.
Waiting too long can give your rivals vital market share like 360 launching a year earlier than PS3.
It’s not just keeping ahead of declining demand but also your market rivals so they don’t get a leg up on you.

Another thing they have to consider is switch. It’s currently blowing up 10m+ WW already and crushing in Japan. Xbox is declining fast when looking at sales numbers for 2017 and the X did nothing to reverse it. So one would think Microsoft would be in a hurry to rush to next gen and start fresh like they did with 360 from OG Xbox in only 4 years. Sony can’t afford to become complacent. Yes PS4 is selling well no doubt but it won’t last forever. But that’s my opinion. Sorry for rambling. Just enjoy discussing the industry and giving my two cents. So in your opinion then, when do you think Sony will release ps5? I’ve already given mine. If not 2019, then when?

PS5 is to come on 2020 or more likely 2021.
Switch is selling good but PS4 is selling even better, why should Sony risk launching something that could sell less than PS5?
And just if MS is stupid to release a new generation next year after X1X this year, if they intended to get into a new gen they should have made the X1X their new gen console already. They won't make something much better in 1 year to justify a new console.
Sony are already planning PS5 and have been doing it since PS4 released or at least PS4Pro, they sure could rush things and release in 6-12 months if they see a major issue with keeping PS4 for a longer time. But It's more likely that they will release the console after some 24 months after they hit peak and start declining. So since 2017 is over 2016 it is still peaking, so no reason for a console until 2020.

So when Sony will get PUBG in a few month the console will become interesting?!

So Sony managed to not release 3 games you are interested this whole gen, including all 3rd parties??? What are the games that interest you in Xbox? And why not just play on PC then?

@donferrari Correct. Why would I need a ps4 for multiplats when I already have an Xbox One X and a pc if I prefer a console?

And then why have an X1X if you preffer multiplats if you could have bought a PS4 4 years ago for cheaper than X1?

Except everything you said is wrong. These consoles, especially PS4 is selling at a rate that no one would have thought a home console would ever sell again in 2013/14.

Would you release a brand new console when your current console is having its best year ever and is potentially going to have a better year next year? I personally wouldn’t want to cannibalise the success of my console, I’d wait till the sales gets close to low enough for a new generation of console.
I see this generation lasting as long as last generation. So, after 2020 would be my safe bet. 2021 would mark 8 years of the generation, and last generation was about 8 years between the Xbox 360 release and the PS4/Xbox One release.

You only have a point if you include the Wii in the equation, which wouldn’t be a sensible thing to do.

@ZS: Have I said PS5 would launch in 2017? I think I haven't. Plus, you say 2018 will be potentially better. Well, potentially, it can be anything (better, worse, the same). But allow me, in return, to put things this way: would you not release a new console 6 years after the current one when your direct competitor (Xbox) is, and it's threatening to eat up all the sales? And, if you were Microsoft, would you not launch a new console in 2019 (or even 2018) when the current one isn't doing anything special?

@Hiku: First, as far as I remember, those analysts predicting 100M for each console were working at or for some big publishers. So, there was big money relying on those predictions. Hence, they were relevant "comments".
Second, I am perfectly aware that Sony and Microsoft would want to build as few systems as possible once their real profit is on games. But if sales decrease, they will have to. And, aside from this Christmas season, XOne sales have been declining pretty fast. And, if Microsoft launches a new console in 2018 or 2019, Sony cannot afford to wait until 2021.
Third, soccer mom buying a Wii for Wii Fit matters as much as basket mom buying PS2 for Singstar or volley mom buying XOne for Just Dance. It happens in every generation. Those kind of cases actually bring new gamers to the consoles' world. Yet this gen is down in sales. But it's not down just 10M or 20M. It will probably end down 60M. It will end at the levels of the 6th generation. The ever growing industry will go 12 years backwards. That has never happened in history.
Fourth, whereas PS4 and XOne have had new powerful versions, PS3 and X360 had had Move and Kinnect to prolong the their lifecycle. So I don't buy into the potential you see.

So you think MS is going to release a X2 or something like that only 1 year after releasing X1X? Do you think they are crazy? And if they done, how much better would it be as a console launching for 399? Doesn't even make sales...

And on the matter of sales, the substitution usually is when the SW sales are on severe decline not really bounded to HW sales in a direct way (except of course that HW sales push SW sales and vice-versa).

Nahh, the PS4 is probably going to sell close to 140 million units. That alone is about the same as the combined sales for PS3 and 360. Then you add in the rest of the sales for X1 and Switch and you got an overall superior generation.

Nothing, they don't need to. Nintendo is doing their own thing with the Switch, which is selling incredibly well with predictions of even better sales in the next years. Unless PS5 and the next Xbox are going to be hybrids like the Switch, Ninty don't need to worry.
