Rovio: Angry Birds Go Has 'Higher Reach' Than Mario Kart Franchise

Rovio: Angry Birds Go Has 'Higher Reach' Than Mario Kart Franchise - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 09 April 2015 / 5,098 Views

Rovio Stockholm’s general manager, Oskar Burman, has made a pretty brave statement. He claims that Angry Birds Go has 'higher reach' than the entire Mario Kart franchise combined.

It is well worth keeping in mind, however, that Angry Birds Go is free-to-download on smartphones, as Burman himself notes in a subsequent Tweet, and that multiple people will typically play each copy of Mario Kart.

Rovio: Angry Birds Go Has Sold More Than Mario Kart Franchise

For what it's worth, the Mario Kart franchise has sold 106 million units since the original title launched back in 1992, while Angry Birds Go has been downloaded 130 million times since 2013.

Never heard of Angry Birds Go... :/

The Angry Birds craze is long gone though. People moved on to Candy Crush, Trivia Crack, etc. Meanwhile, the Mario Kart franchise is over 20 years old and still going strong.

130 million people downloaded a free game!!!!!!!

I wonder how many people would download it for $40-60????

The whole Angry Bird franchise will die long before Mario Kart

Lol, this guy seems to think that Angry Birds isn't dying, and has deluded himself into thinking that customers getting a free download engage as much with a product as with a $60 purchase.

Played it. Nowhere near the quality and fun of MK. Also.....£50 or so for a Kart?!
The game is full of micros transactions and it takes a long time to progress without buying stuff. (which I never do.)

Casual gaming is a whole different demographic. Rovio, you are deep in the sand right now.

Mobile gaming doesn't count. The games are free and people pay for the little add-ons for it. I like Angry Birds but don't get ahead of yourselves.

Lol.

The bubble has burst and Rovio is officially out of ideas.

They are now ripping off the best in the business.

Hahaha..lots of bitter ego-bruised comments. What Rovio said was simply statistical fact. Nobody said which one is better or more successful. They have different business models. :P

I like how he tries to downplay Mario Kart's numbers by saying they are not unique buyers. This game as stated has been out since 2013. No idea when 2013. But many people get a new phone every year or every 6 months. Someone could have downloaded this same game like 3-5 times already themselves on each new phone they get.

Any free games with IAPs don't get a 2nd look from me. Gameloft destroyed Dungeon Hunter with that foolishness.

I would bet half the people who downloaded angry birds played it once and never touch it again. Meanwhile I've got 200 hundred hours of fun out of mk8 alone...

Put Mario Kart on mobile (it will not happen) and we´ll see ;)

I wonder if it yields higher profits as well. I wouldn't be surprised if it does considering how accepting mainstream mobile gamers are to in app purchases.

i was expecting people to reply on emotion and was not let down. All he is saying is that more people have played it than MK series. Its just numbers. He didnt say it was better than MK or anything like that, relax people.

Your implying that the only people to have ever played Mario Kart had to have owned the game. Hell someone who has never purchased a Mario Kart game could have played at a friends, or even just picked up a controller at best buy and playing demo for 5 minutes. And those 5 minutes are probably as long as half the players of Angry Birds Go played that Angry Birds game before they never touched it again on their phone.

Exactly, it would easily crack the 100M mark if Angry Birds racing can..

But in doing so it would harm their consoles/handhelds and quite possibly their image, not every fan/gamer wants Nintendo to go mobile but these people on mobile really don't see their platform being a literal shit dump of a wasteland when it comes to quality games and games that last longer than 5 mins with lifelong lasting appeal.
