I Got Much More Than a One Touch with FIFA 13 - Preview

FIFA 13 for iOS has seen some major improvements over last year’s game, bringing this year’s edition closer to a full console-like experience. Chief among these changes is a complete graphical overhaul which brings the iOS version more in line with the visual splendor of its HD counterparts. Only a few seconds after the opening kick I had to pause the game and enter instant replay so I could scrutinize the graphics up close and make sure my eyes weren’t playing tricks on me. I don’t want to oversell it, but the game looks better than I thought was currently capable on a tablet device (note: I was playing the game on a giant HD screen). Not only do the character models actually resemble their real life equivalents (trust me the same could not be said about past iterations) but they animate fluidly and with real mass behind them, so they feel like more than just pixels on a screen. The pitch and stadium looked good as well, with many available daylight and weather options to choose from.

In celebration of their recent Champion’s League title win I chose my favorite club, Chelsea, and tried out the game in a match against Manchester City. Of course playing on a tablet meant all the control inputs were virtual. Movement was controlled by a virtual joystick in the bottom left-hand corner and all the other commands were located on the right. There are buttons for sprinting, passing, and shooting. Of course the commands switch out on the fly when you don't have possession of the ball.

With regards to control, the biggest update has been made to the way you perform special moves while dribbling. In past iOS iterations you would enter the command for a trick move and the outcome would be completely random. At last, with FIFA 13, you have complete control of what moves you perform and when. A skills move button has been added and once you press it a square grid appears around it. Depending on how you move your fingers on those squares, the player will perform the corresponding skill move. Different gesture combinations around this grid system will yield nearly any skill move you can think of, turning the iOS version into a game of skill just like the console versions. With this system in place, I was able to blow past defenders gracefully with Drogba and get myself in position for a high percentage shot on goal.

Also new for FIFA 13 is the ability to change the mentality of your entire team just by swiping your finger across the touchscreen. Say if I want the team to play more aggressively, I could swipe in the direction of the opposition’s goal. Conversely, if I wanted them to get back and defend, I would swipe towards our own goal. The game feels very tactile because you can pass the ball by simply tapping on the player you want to pass it to. There are also a host of interface upgrades to make it easier to position your players on the pitch with simple tap commands to alter preset configurations, or the ability to drag and drop replacements on the field.

The iOS version is also connected to EA’s Origin online service, which allows the inclusion of the hit EA Football Club feature, where gamers all around the world compete for their favorite clubs by contributing experience points earned through playing the game. Your in-game persona and experience points are even transferable across platforms this time around. To top it all off, EA will be offering weekly challenges that offer gamers the chance to recreate the top highlights from the world of football within the game. Thanks to all of the upgrades it seems like the iOS version of FIFA will be a fully featured title rather than an afterthought. FIFA 13 will get the ball rolling on to iOS devices, and just about every other viable gaming platform, this fall.
