The Top 10 Events of this Generation (So Far) - News

The seventh generation is an exciting time. There are major changes undergoing as we live and breathe. Gamers that frequent the internet are as testy as ever. Before you take the dive, make sure to show up in your flippers, attach your snorkel, brand your humor on your chest and put your preconceived notions in your back pocket. Alright, let’s jump in!
Bye Bye Jackie Boy
Gamers do not agree. Where there are opinions there are disagreements. Every gamer has a loud mouth and an argumentative typing finger. There was only one thing everyone could come together for. There was one binding element that would put aside all differences, like getting along with family begrudgingly on Christmas. We all wanted lawyer Jack Thompson to leave gaming alone. He was the culmination of years of government interference and bad mouthing about the violence in gaming. He represented the worst of the contradictions, hypocrisy and mistruths these heathens put on our loving hobby. Gaming to them (and him especially) was a DVD case filled with a loaded gun and a crack pipe. His attacks on developer Rockstar were especially damaging.
Oh how the mighty have fallen now. Thompson not only pissed gamers off consistently, but seemed to use unethical ways of going about his attacks. A very sensible judge saw about disbarring good old Jackie indefinitely and now gamers everywhere can breathe a sigh of relief. We can also go about disagreeing with each other again. Good times!
The Halo Killer
It was sure to happen eventually. Publishers everywhere spent most of the last generation and the first few years of this one coming up with the one first person shooter that could knock Halo off its perch at the top. Combatants fell left and right by completely embarrassing knockouts in sales. There was Killzone, Black, Half-Life 2, Brothers in Arms, Doom 3, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Call of Duty 2, Rainbow Six Vegas, and numerous other pretenders to the throne.

Then it finally happened. In the same fall 2007 shopping season that saw the release of the record-breaking Halo 3, Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty 4 showed up with a vicious left and a monster right hand to win the FPS Title belt by decision after a gruelling 12 rounds. Critically and commercially it outperformed its opponent. A year later and it has upheld its title, but there are new contenders and seasoned veterans looking for a rematch. Now the question is who will be the Call of Duty killer?
The Battle for Rock N’ Roll
You’re one of three things. You’re either a Guitar Hero shred-head, a Rock Band groupie, or you just don’t give a crap and should skip this section altogether. Guitar Hero was a novel concept by Harmonix that was loosely lifted from peripheral-based note memorization games made by Konami. Publisher RedOctane provided the peripherals and held the name to the franchise. You use a cool plastic guitar with buttons to hit notes as they drop from the top of the screen to the bottom. The songs were taken from popular rock n’ roll music. It was an instant hit and classic. Guitar Hero II followed it the next year.
Harmonix and RedOctane were then acquired by different entities. MTV Networks acquired Harmonix and entered in a publishing deal with EA. RedOctane and the Guitar Hero name were picked up by Activision. The dilemma awarded gamers with two similar franchises that continue to push boundaries while simultaneously mimicking and one-upping each other at every turn. Activision has Guitar Hero by Neversoft and EA/MTV has Rock Band by Harmonix. This is continuing as I type and will probably not settle any time in the near future. Do notice which two monster publishers are putting their muscle behind these games. This brings us to…
ActiBlizzard, Electronic Arts and the Dog-Eat-Dog World
It’s a dangerous playground being a third party publisher nowadays. You’re either the hunter or the prey. You’re the acquisition or the studio formerly known as. You’re ActiBlizzard and EA, or you’re everybody else.
As the costs of gaming development continue to rise at an uncomfortable rate, more and more studios are looking at the big picture. They can either make smaller, manageable projects or sink in large, unprofitable endeavours. There isn’t an awful lot of wiggle room there. EA opened the floodgates in every publisher's eyes - they will chew you up if you aren't careful. It is a safe turn, but it’s a loss of independence and freedom. Activision and Blizzard saw about merging their already monstrous brands for a combined mega-publisher effort to become top dog. Both have taken in countless studios that needed new homes in this scary HD world.
Suddenly it’s not just the small fries that seem to be affected. There are efforts by EA to bring in Take Two, who happen to publish one of the biggest franchises on Earth. There were rumors circulating that Ubisoft could be next. The gaming community is under the same mindset as EA. It’s either “Sony needs to acquire Level-5” or “Nintendo has to buy Sega”. The affliction is all reaching and may continue to squeeze tighter until we’re all one utopia under the sky. Scary thoughts indeed. *shudder*
The Wada Megaton
The E3 2008 conferences were a great thing to watch. Best naps I have had all year. The announcements were ho-hum and the crowds desperately needed a Red Bull. Yoichi Wada comes out to give a few quick snippets of info at the end of the Microsoft conference, and leaves the stage…or does he? As Don Mattrick of Microsoft begins his closing speech, Wada very rudely interrupts him. He mouths the now infamous words “One more thing” and leaves the audience with…THE trailer. FF XIII would be on the Xbox 360.
What followed from there was fire and brimstone coming down from the sky, rivers and seas boiling, 40 years of darkness, earthquakes, volcanoes, the dead rising from the grave, human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together, mass hysteria! At least that’s what it felt like as the majority of the gaming internet melted as traffic overloaded just about anywhere this news popped up on. It gave new definition to the word megaton and more importantly, showed just how different things would be for third party publishers this generation. This was the straw that broke the camel’s back, following Dragon Quest IX, Devil May Cry 4, Monster Hunter 3 and Grand Theft Auto IV as other notable offenses. The third party exclusive mentality died that day in the hearts of HD console owners everywhere and truly put the fear into the remaining few believers.
The Big Red Failure
You’re getting home from a harsh double shift at your mediocre desk job. You have one thing on your mind, spacing out in your gaming world. You turn on your Xbox 360 expecting to join a hectic massacre online match in Gears of War. Huh? Why’d the lights just flash red? Uh oh.
This is unacceptable and will reverberate in the industry for a long time, ensuring no console manufacturer ever blunders this bad again. The Red Rings of Death will forever be known as the poster child of hardware defects, and no amount of warranty will ever shake the stigmatism that will be stamped on Microsoft’s ass until they finally get it right with their next console.
Microsoft was in a “damned if you do, damned if you don’t” situation. On one hand, they had to get out there earlier than the competition to carve a section of the pie for themselves. On the other, it caused their hardware to suffer in design so badly it’s taken over a billion dollars to rectify, not including the massive brand damage they have sustained. No amount of money will recover the tarnished name of Xbox. Only better hardware and lots of time will heal those wounds.
Get a Second Job! The PS3 is Coming!
Oh the infamous day. 2006 was the final big boy Electronics and Entertainment Expo (E3) before the whole event went through it’s not so wonderful transformation. Sony was the top dog going in and the next-gen ball was firmly in their grasp. We knew the hardware would be packing heat. We saw outstanding video of the new Sony (and friends) line-up. We just never thought we’d be paying through our teeth for the black behemoth. Thankfully Ken Kutaragi was there to remind us after the fact that not only was this not a $600 bad dream, but that we should work those extra hours just so we could afford one. In the end, consumers spoke up by not opening up the wallets and Sony figured out they couldn’t sell at Lexus prices in a Toyota world.
World War III: HD-DVD vs. Blu-Ray
Now here was a competition with depth. The PS3 and Xbox 360 were not only battling over gaming but were battling over the introduction and domination of two competing high definition movie formats. You had Toshiba’s HD-DVD format piggybacking on the Xbox 360 and Sony was leading a dual charge to take over on two fronts. The war was short and ugly, but the better of the two emerged victorious. It was always a measure of Sony fighting harder and taking it more seriously. Blu-Ray was an investment in their future, while Microsoft lazily offered the alternative. Sony took the ultimate chance by building their next console around this tech, and it paid off in spades. Unfortunately, it cost them the other side of the war, but to a different competitor with a unique vision and strategy that both warring gargantuans never saw coming.
The Ocean is Bluer on the Other Side
Once upon a time, there was a mighty giant named Nintendo. This Nintendo turned from a savior to a tyrant. All of the peasant publishers did not like Nintendo after years of abuse. From a far away land comes Sony. Sony is the new savior, and enjoys a bountiful reign as king after turning the commoners away from Nintendo. A humbled Nintendo learns from its mistakes and seeks a new way to gain followers. A light bulb goes off in Nintendo’s head. Why bother regaining lost followers? There is an entire world to conquer, and Nintendo will draw its attention in that direction. The olden folk will follow.
It was a lesser known business strategy called disruption. Search the blue ocean and spend less time in the bloody areas of the water. It worked well. Specs and prices were set moderately. Software was unique and appealed to new demographics. The hardware gave new ways to play unlike anything before it. Now the followers have returned, a new world is for the taking and Nintendo is all alone to collect the spoils. Thank the most ambitious software series to come along in a good long while, Touch Generation and the Wii series. It has brought in fish that were uncatchable previously, because the pole was too short and the bait was all wrong. Nintendo learned how to fish again.
On the flip side, Sony has been in a trench war with Microsoft and the two continue to beat each other, copy each other and basically try their hardest to be the winner by becoming just like their opponent. Sony’s concentration on “future proof” technology and an HD movie format blinded them from the real prize, namely gamers and future gamers.
Don’t Break Your Hip Wii Bowling Grandma!
The most surprising, unexpected and shocking event to come about all generation, and possibly ever, is the realization that gaming is expanding beyond its traditional audience into the every man, the every woman, the every boy, the every girl and the every geezer. You may thank or spit on Nintendo for this depending on your feelings about sharing your favorite hobby with your Uncle Carbuncle and Aunt Judith. Gaming’s reach is continuing to grow too, with software that can barely be considered a game, but it's exactly what the doctor ordered sales wise.
Your nursing homes are stocked with more Wii consoles than Bingo boards. Daycare babies are swinging more Wii-motes than rattles. Nintendo’s heart and soul, Shigeru Miyamoto, recently suggested that elementary schools use their newest software, Wii Music, to teach children the basics of music. The DS is packing software to improve your brain functions and enhance your cooking. The Wii is keeping you fit and allowing you to play sports in the house. Nintendo has truly gone out with the image of gaming for everybody, and it seems everybody (and their soccer mother) is getting on board. How about you gamer?

I think that the fact that Microsoft managed to sway software companies from sole-releasing on the PS3 was one of the truly epic events of this console generation.

-Money buddy ^^ why do you think most peaple puts M$ standing for Microsoft ? They want it ? They pay fot it , and we all know that square was worried abolt the coasts of FF13 ....
I am so grateful that I missed the FFXIII multiplat fanboy meltdown.
As for the people disagreeing with the Halo killer, it sold more than Halo. That's a fact, no matter how hard you spin it. Not only that, but I seriously doubt it would sell the way it did if it was multiplat.

Enjoyable read. Good work!
I think that the fact that Microsoft managed to sway software companies from sole-releasing on the PS3 was one of the truly epic events of this console generation.
I can't think of any annoucement ever that was a bigger shock then FFXIII for the 360. No one saw that annoucement coming, and people were ridiculed for even suggesting it would happen. The fanboy meltdown was epic.
SE with that anouncement basicly called out the PS3 as a failure.
in multi plat sales doc4 outsaled halo3. but in x360 vs halo3 sales it does NOT!....
Nice pics.
Very good article...
""I'm surprised you didn't mention Zelda Almost Detrowned Three Times: First Bioshock(for one day), Second SMG(for one week), and Finally GTA4(almost two weeks).
""
Actually ... Mario Galaxy had the best review scores every at 54 total reviews or so reviews. That was WEEKS after release.
that's amusing on last pictures.
Good list but Call of Duty 4 being a Halo killer is a complete joke. Halo 3 sold more head to head on 360 and it's back to being the most played game on Xbox live in Major Nelsons live activity ratings. That says all you need to know. To be the "halo killer" you'd have to sell more copies, and be played online more on Live, which it isn't doing either now.
As for the reviews, there's a .8% difference on Gamerrankings, and if simply having a higher review score means it's a halo killer than Bioshock and Orange Box are also halo killers along with every other higher scoring FPS. Both were decent games but Gears of War teabags both of them anyways to me.
I stopped taking this bit seriously when I read that Half-Life 2 failed to knock down Halo as the best shooter ever... Massive no-no in my book. The rest was fine, love the pic of jolly 'ole Thompson cuddling a copy of his favourite game! :-D
If this is the rela list, and it´s seriously made, it´s a very bad joke as article.
Wow, why isn't Mario Galaxy on this list in some way. When a Mario game is released, that is a huge event for any generation. I don't see why you put stuff like movie formats and wii bowling garbage over Mario, the greatest gaming franchise ever made.
Nothing huge.
what about 360 outsell ps3 in japan for a month? ihihihi
I'd say Blu Ray is number one and FFXIII is number 2. That was serious.
You should have included the lazyness of some developers to fix technical issues (aka bugs) BEFORE the game's release? That "release now, fix later" mentality? As it happened with SOCOM Confrontation and Fallout 3?
Most people seem not to care much, but it's my No1 event in this gen. Worse than the RRoD.
Don't agree with all the points but good article none the less.
I approve of Hoffmole's message.
A fun article to read, I enjoyed it.
My vote definitely goes to FFXIII going multi.
Fucking hilarious! You rule, man! All the other comments seem to miss the, I dunno what you'd call this, satire? Beautiful, you can have my babies anyday.
The really good news for the gamers in this generation is that now there are more gamers/games than ever (of any kind) !
And still growing ...
how come giant enemy crab and sonys bullshit presentation at e3 2005 didn't make to the list?
Great read Onyx!
I agree with NightDragon83 about having downloaded games on the list. The money they are making off these old classic is pretty amazing. They probably could cut prices in half and still make a killing.
Great top 10. Very good reading indeed.
With the Halo 3 thing (i hate the game) can you really say COD4 beat it? As it sold on 3 platforms and then only just beat it. On 360 alone Halo 3 beat COD4 by nearly 3m units, which is a lot. COD4 is the better game just not sure you can compare a multi-platform game to a single player game. It is like saying Madden is better then MGS4.
Excellent. Very good reading. But aren't the last two basically the same thing?
Great top 10... you pretty much covered all bases with that one Onyxmeth!
I would also add a * to that list (or a number 11 if you prefer)... downloadable retro gaming! Being able to download 5 generations worth of software from across all different platforms right onto one console is a huge event and achievement of this generation as well.
C'mon.. how shocked were you guys when you found out that not only would you be able to download all kinds of classic NES, SNES and N64 games on the Wii, but also titles from long-time arch rivals Sega, NEC and Neo-Geo?!? Not to mention all the arcade and console classics you get on XBLA and PSN as well, plus totally new and/or updated versions of classic gaming series such as Mega Man, Bionic Commando, etc.
Tack that onto your list for good measure!
do I sense alot of angsty Halo fans? If I recall correctly weren't there more people playing online COD4 than Halo 3? Wasn't the success of the Halo series built off of the multiplayer? Wasn't COD4's multiplayer its biggest selling point and critically acclaimed for its freshness? compare that to how many times people complain about how they ruined halo 3's multiplayer...every match in that games is shoddy snipes.
Halo is a great game, COD4 is a great game. Halo is/was fps king, but I think a few people have been made to believe that this is the way it will always be.
The game industry (along with any other industry) is all about progression, face it. I'm not trying to attack halo, but some people need to open there eyes. Halo will not/cannot be fps king forever.
There are several games coming out within the next few months that would probly dethrone Halo/COD4 anyways, Resitance 2, Gears 2, COD5, Killzone 2 the list goes on and on.
Please don't respond to this with a flame, I have nothing against the greatness that is Halo I just find it frustrating when religious halo fans refuse to accept the fact that there could possibly be something that equals or outshines there beloved halo.
I like this for the most part but u are wrong with the Halo3/call of duty part. First off halo 3 worldwide sales are only a small margin behind COD4 (btw vgchartz off by a large ammount) yet H3 is only on the xbox 360 where cod4 is on 360/ps3/pc not including the DS version so pound for pound cod4 is a fair margin behind halo. Then as far as critical success on gamerankings.com halo has 98 reviews with a average of 93.4 where the xbox version of cod4 has 83 reviews with a average of 94.2 meaning there is virtually no difference halo had more reviews to prove it self with only a small difference and then ps3 version is reviewed lower at 93.7 and the PC version is only at 92.7%. Then u add the fact that Halo is such a built up franchise and ALOT of people want to hate on it and give distorted reviews where they are just so tired of halo talk. Then instant gratification people who just want to shoot die and spawn instantly and charge without complexity give COD4 more than its really worth (btw u do know Counter Strike has been out for years doing what cod4 is doing and it did it better YEARS AGO) So with that factored it there is NO way COD4 is a clear Halo killer. I own both games and like them both but COD4 is not the killer not even close.
P.S up until 4 no COD game has been great since the first thats alot of bad ones.....not where every halo will be great...
what about xbox 360 is killing the ps3?
Halo 3 outsold Call Of Duty though........
Well thanks for reading the article guys. I'll try and answer a few things here.
-
The list isn't really ordered. It's supposed to flow naturally from one to the next as best as it could. That is why the Nintendo ones follow each other, why EA/ActiBlizzard follows Rock Band/Guitar Hero, amongst others. It doesn't mean that RROD isn't as impactful as a $599 PS3. It just flows better as an article having them in that order. The only one I truly felt was the most important was the final one. I purposely ended with that.
-
I do agree that Halo 3 very well may have outsold COD4 if it were multiplatform, but it's not. Also it has to do with critical reception, and public opinion(anecdotal I know). Last gen, no FPS could outperform Halo 2 on any level, and COD4 basically managed to do the impossible in the exact same Fall season Halo 3 released in.
-
Regarding the other million games that went multiplatform, they don't all need their own listing. The FF XIII listing was to represent the whole lot as I felt it truly was the last straw, where opinion truly changed to any game could possibly and probably go multiplat at this point. GTA IV, MH3, DMC4, and others did not have that same effect on fans. GTA IV was not as important because it was never exclusive in the first place.
I'm around so if you guys want to ask questions directly, I'm open ears.
@c0rd:
Have to agree. The sales of CoD4 are truly exceptional, but what Halo can do on a console with such a small userbase is beyond exceptional. It's attach rate is ridiculous. Had it been released on the PS3 Halo 3 would've outsold CoD4 by a long way.
@DMJ: FFXIII going multiplat not so big? Wasn't your reaction to that event pretty extreme? You weren't exactly alone, either.
Even though CoD4 did top Halo 3, I bet Halo 3 would've kept its title if it had 2 platforms to fight on (I would have both games, but I don't have a 360). Not to take away from CoD4, but it's hard to manage higher than a 46% attach rate in the US... which is what Halo needs to match it there.
@madanial
I agree
MH3 has much more significance
it could mean the difference between a PSP like a comeback or a gamecube like lifeline for PS3
Lol you guys forgot when PS3 got a bad start but look at now, It is stable.
How about Monster Hunter 3 move to Wii?Isn't that shock enouch to put into top ten events?
Btw, i don't thinks PS3 price cut should be on the top ten because Xbox also dose the same thing too.
@indodude
thats exactly why it matters.....as previous FF's have sold more than PS3's current userbase....this is why FF13 CAN act as a HUGE HUGE system seller there...as those previous FF buying fans should buy it then.
darthdevidem01 says:
cool idea but as FF13 is still exclusive in Japan I think it shouldn't be there
Yeah isn't Japan is where it really matters? Or am I wrong because only 2m+ has bought the PS3 in Japan.
The only thing that actually caught my attention this generation is all of the 3rd party developers announcing their game series multi-platform.
(Mainly a kick in the balls for Sony.)
How can people forget. I remember the hordes of topics even in this forum about FF 13 going to xbox, it was freaking huge. Also many sites and topics have reported RROD, RROD is known by everyone and one of those jokes about the xbox.
Everything he posted seems spot on, maybe the only problem is he may have missed a few things but I can't remember anything else.
the ONLY ones that moulded gaming are:
The last two......
even RROD come to think of it....wasn't "that big" of a loss in the end
Very good article! FF XIII on 360 for me was the most shocking of all...
and of course, the 3RL. Microsoft lost this gen for itself with this.
@blackstar
it is certainly not the biggest of all time.
That would be FF7 completely leaving N64 despite LOADS of tech demo's shown....
N64 people didn;t even get the game....we are atleast still getting the game with Japan getting it exclusive
GTAIII was timed exclusive, and sold very little on the xbox, GTAIV had exclusive dlc for the 360. I would agree that it should be on there, but I can't think of what it should replace. Good list
@ "FFXIII" megaton : yes it is and it is the biggest of all time, I agree Japan is what important but still....
come to think of it , I'm happy it went multi because I'm a ff fan and I want better sales for the game so we get more FFs
Final fantasy xiii on the 360 was a shocker. I am still in shock. I couldn't believe it. Oh well, sony still has final fantasy versus xiii. Another great moment was blu-ray discs destroying hd dvd discs in sales. I expect the Blu-Ray dominating sales to continue throughout this next generation.
cool idea but as FF13 is still exclusive in Japan I think it shouldn't be there
neither should Activision Blizzard thing either!
n how did the RROD change the landscape....it was hardly a problem....lol {sarcasm}
Very good list,thank you.
I can't figure out what you missed.
1, 2, 3,and 4 are weird.
1 and 2 are essentially combined.
I'd also argue that RRoD is bigger than the 600 launch price of the triple, seeing as that only lasted about eight months, while RRoD has lasted about 2 years (if the reports of falcons not RRoDing are true.
And I still don't understand how FFXIII was so big when it's not coming out for 360 in the country that it will sell the most in. But whatever.
Nice idea though.
Very good read indeed
Good read. I really enjoyed it. I think it sums up this gen so far very well.
Beja-Beja, um GTA 3 series was also multiplatform so it doesn't really mean much.
I'm surprised you didn't mention Zelda Almost Detrowned Three Times: First Bioshock(for one day), Second SMG(for one week), and Finally GTA4(almost two weeks).
The last two puzzle me. And how does the GTA IV multiplat does not make the list?
