PS6 RAM and SSD Alone Reportedly to Cost 'Over $680' - News
by William D'Angelo , posted 21 hours ago / 2,254 ViewsThe PlayStation 6 memory (RAM) and storage (SSD) will reportedly cost over $680, according to insider KeplerL2 on NeoGAF (via VideoGamesChronicle).
"RAM + NAND alone is over $680," said the insider on the current cost of those two components on the PS6. These component costs originally cost Sony far less when the design was originally finalized.
The cost of memory and storage have risen dramatically over the last few years due to shortages driven by the demand of AI data centers. This has been seen in the increased prices of the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and the Nintendo Switch 2.
The price of the PS5 Digital Edition has increased from $400 in 2020 up to $600 now, while the PS5 with a disc drive has gone up from $500 to $650. The Xbox Series S 512GB has increased from $300 to $500 and the Xbox Series X with a disc drive from $500 to $800. The Nintendo Switch 2 has gone up from $450 to $500.

Given how PS5 and Series X are formidable consoles power-wise, I see no urgency in putting out successors just yet. Graphics are way past the point of diminishing returns, games in PS4 already looked really nice, RDR2 holds up perfectly fine 8 years later... Sure, new tech opens new doors, but if it's going to be this catastrophically bad price-wise might as well hold onto existing hardware some more time until the storm passes.
To be clear, even some games in PS3 and 360 and before could hold up if the art style was appropriate, but it was clear they could always go up in resolution and framerate and up the graphics a bit. Nowadays, 1080p@60FPS is perfectly achievable with a good looking game... Everything else is a welcome plus, but not critical for a properly satisfactory experience.
At least for the Series X, it's already failed so getting a new system out gives it a chance to have the most powerful console for awhile.
And this is why it makes no sense to release the next Playstation anytime soon, even with PS5 sales slowing way down. After all, PS5 sales have plummeted precisely because even that system is far too expensive, PS6 is going to be way more expensive.
Makes no sense to release until holiday 2029 at earliest. Sony should be focusing on selling games to their soon-to-be over 100 million userbase. Not on preparing for a $1k next gen hardware that will sell less than PS3. And with the obvious diminishing returns of tech in video games these days, PS6 won't be all that much more impressive than PS5, just as PS5 already wasn't much more impressive than PS4.
We are at the point at which it doesn't make sense for console gens to last less than a decade. We were already approaching that time, but the AI debacle has leaped the industry straight into that time now.
I can wait a couple of years until the prices go down
Now with the high cost for next gen, Sony's giving me no reason to jump on board for the PS6.
I've already been preparing myself to skip next gen and just focus on current gen and my backlogs.
With Sony's move to all-digital makes it easier for me to skip a generation or so as I won't feel the need to buy physical games right away anymore before it disappears. With all digital I can just wait for them to be dirt cheap like I do with PC games, and I can just wait for someone to sell me their PS6 for less when PS7 comes out.
Yea i'll probably just build a PC and get a Switch 2. I think the PS5 might be my last playstation.
Those are expensive too, but choosing something else is of course still a legit choice. Personally PC has been my main platform for a long time now, but it's been pretty rough price-wise the whole decade.
But at this point the PS6 is just a PC that doesn't use Steam and can't play PC games.
People are mad at Sony because of this. But this isn’t Sony’s fault. These AI data centers are needless and are costing consumers money out of pocket, and jobs that sustain households.
We just don't need new consoles. Power isn't limiting gaming experiences. This continues constant pursuit of more and more power is just making gaming unaffordable and it's completely unnecessary.
I think it is true today, but it was not in earlier generations.
those are probably the most expensive parts, even when demand isn't crazy (like it currently is with the A.I boom going on)... however this is not a good thing. The total cost will go past 1000$ then just in BoM. Get ready for a 900$ PS6 (with Sony losing like 100-150$ on each unit sold).
It's not Sony's fault. Still, this thing should be sold at a $200-$400 loss when it comes out. Use the razor model, since they are so keen on digital games and subscriptions to make money anyway.
Exactly. Just like they sold the PS3 for 600$, and it cost them almost 900$ to make, they can just say screw it, and sell it at a lower price. And do the same even now for the PS5, they can eat the loss and sell it for 399$, launch price, while everything else goes up. That way they can also increase the sales in the long run, and with that increase their profits too, from games, and subscriptions.
PS5 is way more profitable than PS4. It's not eating into anything
I said it could ate, if Sony was to eat the loss and leave the PS5 at it's launch price 399$ .. You don't follow the context there ..
Problem with that is it'd probably yeah take selling at $400 loss to be viewed as affordable for gamers (let's say $1k cost, price at $600). Say they sell first 50 million units at $400 loss, thats $20 billion loss. It'd take the complete revenue of hundreds of millions of full-priced game sales just to make up that loss, so in reality it'd take probably a billion full priced ($70) game sales to make up for just the first 50 million sales in hardware losses.
I need a new hobby
Switch 1 library + indie (or deeply discounted AAA) games on steam is the way to go.
If they go the route of upgrading a significant amount. Cutting cost is the key here and a small upgrade I think power wise would be fine. Storage on the other hand needs to be bigger.
Yet, PS6 isn't about just adding power, Sony usually add something to appeal. Some sort of innovation and at this time, I'm not sure what that would be. That's going to determine if people jump in.
They should delay by another 5 years. China is catching up fast in production and tech, and they believe by 2030 there will be an over supply of ram/ gpu in the market.
Realistically the PS5 and Series X have of life and power that feels unstopped.
That's not a report though, that's a leak, so a rumor.
Anyway, its likely true, but still.
I do wonder if they will try to move the PS6 faster to stop the PS5 hack to grow bigger. The more time passes, the more the homebrewers will make the hole wider, and the more systems will use it.
2070 launch date confirmed.
2K it is.
So don't make it and if they do don't buy it.
