Jeez, no one is talking about 1.3M!!! PD says they have shipped 7.3M as of September, at that time VGC tracked about 6.75M sold or so which means about 550k copies on shelves at that time, which makes sense, considering the franchise and the holiday boost just around the corner. The game may even be overtracked! Honestly you guys are just way too much! I never changed my line of thinking. I guess it's impossible to put some sense into you as you will always claim the game is undertracked no matter what... At least just stop pulling out numbers from a hat or talking about ''fact'' without any proof to back it up, that way you will all lmore credible!

so a game that sells 60k a week during the Christmas season and 25k during the rest of the year will have hundreds of thousands of copies sitting on shelves, and stores will just accept this? taking up precious space on shelves and inventory. and Sony will just ship 6 months of supply because the can, with no need to make another shipment? its brand new games, that sell 100k copies per week that have hundreds of thousands on shelves not games that sell a 1/3 of that. im telling you for a fact that Sony did not ship 6 months worth of Gt5. im telling you for a FACT that it has sold that shipment, its been more than 3 months. im telling you for a fact that Sony has made another shipment since (one stores would not accept if there were still 100's of thousands of copies on shelves.

@dsage01 Please stop making a fool of yourselves. 7.3M-7.13M = 170k. Sony might have shipped some more games since September but nowhere near a million that's for sure. As for the Europe numbers, this is very obvious VGC and PD do not track Europe the same way. As far as global sales goes VGC seems right on the spot... So call me a hater as long as you want, now you're just proving us that you are either totally blind or just unable to understand basic logic. It must be hard to be such a supporter...

atma998 posted 06/01/2012, 11:49
@osamanobama: As I replied to you earlier, games like GT5 have indeed several hundreds of thousand copies sitting on shelves as they are available in larger quantity and in much more locations too. We can see huge discrepencies between shipped and sale figures for all major releases of the big three and other big third party titles as well. You can easily find out by yourself in comparing numbers reported by these companies with actual VGC numbers. But maybe it's easier for you to just being in a denial mode.

recent shipped numbers? you mean numbers that are over 3 months old, of which according to this site they still havent sold, nor will they until March.... 6 months after the shipment. it looks spot on to you because you are delusional. why would they ship enough copies of GT5 to last them 6 months without the need to make even 1 more shipment. Why would stores want hundreds of thousands of copies of GT5 on their shelves when it will is selling less than 60k per week, and soon less than 40k. know with GT5 XL coming out, they will have like what 500k+ sitting on shelves? logic is a good thing, use it.

@DonFerrari Don't worry VGC will update if there is indeed overtracking/undertracking as they did in the past. As of now PD published their numbers two weeks ago and there is still no update so maybe they were just spot on, don't you think? As for the 10M, well I honestly don't have anything more to say as the weekly numbers are speaking for themselves...won't reach it for sure without any big bundle but be free to think it will reach 10 or even 15 million like some other user here, I don't really care.

1 year after release do you think 6 months of supply is common? So ok more power to you... because as it seems here you are the one that know all, because everybody else have another opinion... But I guess it's more your hope that GT5 never sells 10M than the reality... and you mix games that sell 5M, 10M and 25M as the same range of shelve stock after one year??? I can't see a game selling 20k and another selling 100k needing the same stock, seriously... and I don't know how to track, but everytime community complained about undertracking and people like you said it was because of stock (PS3 having 2M and Xbox 360 having 200k were normal for those guys) after 1 or 2 months VGC corrects the sales closer to reality, but be blind if you want.

@atma998: If GT5 had 1M in inventaries along the world during february to july I could understand because they could be left overs from holiday season / debut... but to have this many in shelves when the game sells around 20k a week, more than 6 months of sales sitting on shelves doesn't see that accurate... but whatever any spin you can give to say GT5 numbers is bad or to prove it's IMPOSSIBLE for it to hit 10M without BIG BUNDLING you do... so nevermind.

@atm so you are saying that they shipped 7.3 million as of 3 months ago, and still havent sold though that shipment, and at the pace its going now it wont sell all of that shipment until past march of next year. so you are saying they have shipped enough supply to last them 6 months, and that this site is OVER-tracking this game? that is just nuts. that means they woud have absolutely no need to ship even 1 more copy of GT5 until March 2012. and stores will have just hundreds of thousands of copies of GT5 sitting on the store shelves for 6 months, and not recieve another shipment. its very clear that this game has sold more than 7.3 million. and when this site will show thats this games sales to be around 7.1 million by the end of the year, and the games september shipments to be 7.3 million, and then PD will show its December shipments t be over 7.6 million, what will you say? will it still be over tracked?

In Asia and "Global it looks overtracked (by 500k at least) But in Europe it looks undertracked by at least 600-650k based on PD's shipment info) I doubt retaliers would shipt in so many copies it even it even selling that well. Another factor to conisder is PD doesn't include, South, America, Austraila an Africa so maybe push the sales up 200k. Mind you theses are not actual sales I'm giving info of just estimates according to my calculations. We will just have to wait for the next PD shipment numbers to come out.

Oh and you did not answer my question... how many copies do you think other big first party or any other major titles are sitting on shelves? @CGI This will easily sell more than a million in 2012. Uncharted 2 will sell over a million in it's second full year and GT5 not only has better legs but a much higher overall sales baseline. And as you pointed out before Polyphony's shipments point to this being undertracked anyway, particularly in Europe.

@CGI Ok so because ioi said (probably a year ago, without all the data and new info since then) it will reach 10 million, then we must just assume the game will indeed reach 10 million? Come on, that's ridiculous and you know it. Talking about data to back up your point, you did not bring any for claiming the game is undertracked. Even with my scenario of GT5 selling a couple of 100k/week during the holidays and reaching 7.5M on year's end, I did not see GT5 reaching 10M. With these sales it's now becoming impossible, unless Sony decide to bundle every PS3 with GT5 in the future...

@CGI You will have to define what exactly ''stops selling'' means. Is 5k or 10k/week for the upcoming years can be considered as ''stops selling''? 10M cannot be reached magically. And by the way it's performing now, we can easily assume the game will die way sooner than 10M. I won't repeat what I already said about GT4 frame time comparison for obvious reasons.

Can't remember by original estimate for this game, but even 9 million lifetime looks to be difficult, it's a shame because this is basically the best PS3 game out there (after Uncharted), and the racing franchise in general needs this game to do well. I mean look at what's happened to NFS, a good GT is always appreciated.

As for this holiday, if ever Sony planned to release a bundle, it would have been already announced. Maybe next year, who knows?

I didnt say it was impossible for GT5 to reach 10M, just that it was impossible to reach that number without bundles, something that even CGI agreed on. In other words, it all depends on bundles. But now I just have one question and I'm not sure about the answer, that's why I'm asking you guys. Sony did not announce any bundle in the near future. Is it possible to bundle a two years old or more game with a console? I mean is there any example of one of the big three bundling a game launched 2 years ago with their console? I'm wondering because I think the more we advance in GT5 life cycle, the less there is a possibility of bundles.
Message | Report
DonFerrari posted 11/11/2011, 02:28
@ CGI and atma998 And to end discussion, as GT5 is in its 50th week, almost one year down the road I'm most certain GT 4 already had its holiday sales by this time... so if GT5 is still outselling GT4 on a weekly basis (legs account) and is ahead in the same timeframe (frontload portion)... how came the discussion that it's IMPOSSIBLE to GT5 to reach 10M? You can say it's difficult, or that a bundle or greatest hits may help it, but you can't keep saying that people that think it are completly wrong just because they disagree with you. Or some people will wait to see if after GT4 second holiday GT5 is still ahead to accept the possibility? Because CGI didn't said it is certain that GT5 will cross 10M, but that its very possible. And to end the argument, if in January through March (dead season) GT5 still is weekly above GT4 its better to stop denying because after 2 holidays, V2, price cut it is just legs.

atma998 posted 11/11/2011, 12:26
Oh and no, 10M is not unreasonable if heavily bundled but in such a case wouldnt be more logical to compare it with another heavily bundled GT title like GT3? Yeah I know, it could makes GT5 look bad.

atma998 posted 11/11/2011, 12:20
You see? That's why we cannot have a serious discussion. You have completely ignored most of my points instead of trying to understand them while throwing again your ''time frame'' comparison with GT4 wich doesnt make any sense and you know why as previously discussed. You conclude saying there is nothing suggesting GT5 can't reach 10M. Wow! What a solid argument. Well at least I tried...
Message | Report
atma998 posted 10/11/2011, 11:31
@CGI Fact: you did not comment the game sales during the low season while you're now commenting each week (or day). Fact: To reach 10M before the end of 2013, the game will need to sell an average of 30k/week during the next 25 months or so. Fact: The first year of a frontloaded game is always the best selling period of its life cycle. Fact: GT5 sold about 30k/week during 2011 and this number will obviously decrease during the upcoming years if we follow sales trends of a video game like GT5. Now, how can it possibly reach 10M? Heavy bundles? Yeah maybe, that's hypothetical at that point, but you have now to admit it is the only way it can reach that mark and in such a case it doesnt show it perfomed better than the previous tiltes.

We're just talking about sales of a video game. You're saying it will easily reach the 10M mark while I'm saying it won't. Week after week you feel the need to justify the game's performance and I just put all this into context, something that obviously you don't like. Don't forget GT5 is not a religion but just a video game, so relax!

Also you cannot say X franchise sells Y, it's not how it works in the real world. It's way more complicated than this. As for the time frame comparison with GT4, we have already discussed the issue at length.

No misunderting here, I'm not saying the game is selling bad by the way, just that it's not selling as good as previous iterations. It won't reach GT4 LT sales and it won't reach GT3 LT sales either, which is the one to be compared to in the first place since a first iteration of an established franchise (not a growing one) on a new console always sells better than the second one. In the end, GT5 is selling good in comparison to the average sales of a video game, but not that good if we compare it to previous iterations, that's all.

Even if it can sell a couple of weeks over 100k during the holidays and manage to reach 7.5M on January 1st 2012, how do you think it will sell for 2012, 2013 and 2014? No more than 1.5 million for these three years seems reasonable to believe which makes 9 million LTD. But imo it will probably be less than that like 8-8.5M LTD seems even more reasonable.

Rainbird posted 11/09/2011, 09:54
@ CGI: No, you're getting confused here. ;) We're discussing franchises here, and as I see it, that means the newest game in a series represents the franchise. Now, CoD games might be frontloaded and Black Ops may have sold "faster" than GT5, but so far this year, GT5 and BO have been selling neck and neck in EMEAA. So when BO is 500k units ahead in total sales, I can't see how GT is the bigger franchise. True, BO will fade away once MW3 releases, but there are no signs that MW3 will sell less than BO, so by the time GT5 has overtaken BO, MW3 might very well have done the same. My evidence to support this is as good as your evidence and your case, but right now the numbers are clear. Black Ops is more popular than Gran Turismo 5 and MW3 will be even more popular (tracking about 50% higher in the american pre-orders compared to Black Ops a year ago).
Message | Report
Rainbird posted 11/09/2011, 08:04
Oops, I meant of course that if GT is the bigger franchise, then why has Black Ops outsold GT5!
Message | Report
Rainbird posted 11/09/2011, 07:13
I think you're confusing yourself. You said "CoD is selling more, but as a franchise, GT is bigger than CoD in EMEAA." If GT is the bigger franchise (looking strictly at the PS3), then why has Black Ops outsold it? They've had about the same time on the market, so if GT is bigger, it should do better. I know GT5 will beat BO, that's obvious of course, but CoD is a moving target. Once MW3 releases, then that's the one to beat. Let's say that in one year, GT5 has sold an extra million copies in EMEAA, putting it at a little over 5m units. Black Ops outsold MW2 (on PS3) by about 21% (at the 42 weeks mark), and if MW3 follows that trend, it will have sold about 5.4m copies on the PS3 in EMEAA this time next year. The future is of course purely speculation, but right now CoD is in fact the bigger franchise (on PS3).
Message | Report
Rainbird posted 11/09/2011, 12:46
That's still lifetime sales for GT4 by the way, only 42 weeks for MW2.
Message | Report
Rainbird posted 11/09/2011, 12:40
@ CGI: Oh, and to remove the install base advantage from CoD, I made the same calculations for MW2 (EMEAA, PS360, 42 weeks on the market), and it has outsold GT4 by 850k units, but it launched on a substantially smaller install base (about 8.5m smaller). So yeah.

Rainbird posted 11/09/2011, 12:37
Holy crap that was a long post xD
Message | Report
Rainbird posted 11/09/2011, 12:37
@ CGI: Of course BO will not keep selling like this, it will be replaced, something GT5 won't have to deal with. Now, if we're going to talk growth, I will say this: Based purely on EMEAA PS360 numbers, Black Ops has outsold MW2 with 12% after 42 weeks each (BO's current time on the market), and there's no reason to believe MW3 won't do better than BO. Again based purely on PS360 numbers, Black Ops has currently sold 8,24 million copies in EMEAA, which is 1,74 million copies ahead of GT4. And that's where GT4 is now, six and a half years after it launched. Granted, GT4 launched on a smaller install base in EMEAA (about 4.5m smaller), but that's the only advantage BO had. And that's before we even take the Wii and PC into account, so CoD is definitely bigger than GT in EMEAA.

I knew it, i said before it came out the game wouldnt sell close to 10 mil and it could only hope for about 7-8 mil. Sales pretty much stopped after week 6. Its not selling 10 million.

@wbalmant, I think your goofy. This game is selling great! 6.33million copies sold and its still a full priced title! Thats outstanding!! It took 200 weeks for gt4 to sell 10 million. When this game goes down in price it will get a significant boost. When the holidays come it will get a significant boost that should put it over 7 million. If this game is bundled then who knows how many copies can be sold! The sky is the limit there! If theres one thing that can keep gt5 from reaching 10 million it will be because gt6 is coming out! And if it doesn't reach 10 million then who cares because the game is already a huge success!

Unless shipments during Q1 2011 turn out to be horribly low, the shipment as of 31 Dec 2010 should be considered sold, at latest, by 31 Mar 2011, so we could see a minimum adjustment up by 260k.

@atma998 crazy and stupid predictions are made about every game doesnt mean those predictions become a rule of sorts. I believe this will hit 10 million with about 1.5-2.0 in bundled sales. and i was in the sales prediction threads in fact i correctly guessed the opening week(within 150k) and my estimate of lifetime sales was 9.5 million, i have moved that to 10 recently for a few reasons.

@atma998: Some users saying it will reach 10M without bundles (what isn't impossible, just harder) don't make it a rule you know??? But with 20k sales a week i don't see Sony bundling it before Holiday (maybe just in 2012) because they are still geting nice profit (about 300k dollars everyweek) to just put on a bundle for 0 profit on software and push more hardware with a low margin

If VGC is undertracking it then it is really a little amount... 11 million max like CGI said.
