PSN to be Renamed the 'Sony Entertainment Network'

by William D'Angelo, posted on 06 February 2012 / 1,151 Views

Sony will be renaming its PlayStation Network the 'Sony Entertainment Network' on February 8. All PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita accounts will be renamed, however PSP accounts will remain unchanged. The name change was first revealed last August, in order for the service to be a part of Sony's music and video download services.

"This transition is based on Sony's goal to enhance its unique digital entertainment offering," explained Sony, in a statement. "This helps us get closer to our goal of establishing a global comprehensive network platform of services across games, movies, music and more, all accessible from one convenient account."

Goes great with my theory that the PlayStation brand is on its way to become an integrated technology. If "PlayStation" is just one of the technologies built in to your new TV, the data network shouldn't be called PlayStation Network.

It's NES spelled backward. Brilliant

Has a more traditional feel and look... so it sucks.

Kinda strange, I hope this doesnt lead to them dropping the brand name of the Playstation ;x.

No, I wouldn't think so. The Playstation brand has been damaged, there is no doubt about it, but they wouldn't go as far as getting rid of the brand altogether. What this does lead to believe is that Sony wants to fit its name (Sony) and the word entertainment much more from here on out.

Possibly the use of the the term Sony's next Entertainment System will be used instead of Sony's next gaming machine or gaming platform. Well, looks like we'd be going back to NES times if that were true ;)

If so, we've come full circle :D
