Wii Tops 90m Units Globally in 5 Years from Launch - News

by VGChartz Staff , posted on 29 November 2011 / 9,225 Views

Exactly five years after its November 19, 2006 USA launch, Nintendo has sold 90m Wiis globally. That comes to an average of 18m Wiis sold per year for five years.

VGChartz figures split the 90m at the following levels through November 19, 2011:

the USA - 36.8m

All Europe - 29.5m

Japan - 11.9m

Another 12m Wiis have sold to other growing markets outside of the three main regions. Canada (3m?), Australia (2.5m), Mexico (2-3m?), Brazil (1m?), and South Korea (1-2m?) are the main Wii markets outside the large regions above.

The main figures for Wii remain historically good even with the system slowing 20% per year since 2008.

the USA                      All  Europe                          Japan                  Main Markets

Wii - 36.8m (260 wks)     29.5m (257 wks)        11.9m (258 wks)                 78.2m

PS2 - 30.0m (260 wks)     30.3m (257 wks)        17.6m (258 wks)                 77.9m

Other consoles, such as NES, SNES, Genesis, N64, PS1, X360 and PS3 are simply not even that close to these figures. PS1 stopped selling at 102.5m lifetime, but was likely only at about 60m in the major markets in the identical time frame to Wii & PS2. PS3 has been available for roughly the identical time as Wii (save for Europe) and has sold about 47m units in the three major markets through five years. The X360 sold about 38.5m in the same time frame in developed markets.

Going forward, the difference between Wii and PS2 should be that PS2 sold another 40m units (16m in the US, 5m more in Japan, 19m more in Europe) in the major video game markets after reaching 78m in five years. Wii doesn't look like it will - the US will buy another 10-15m Wiis, Japan will buy 2-4m more, and Europe will buy 8-12m more Wiis. Moreover, while Sony has introduced PS2 to something like 100 countries, Wii is still 'only' in several dozen which means Sony will sell 40-50m PS2s outside Europe, the US and Japan, while Nintendo may only sell 20m-25m Wiis outside those areas.

The wii gets alot of critisism by gamers but its achievements cannot be underestimated. Wii sports might seem like old hat now but everyone remembers the first time they played it. It also made developers give us new experiences(and a ton of shovelware), suddenly games could be used to keep fit, games like call of duty could be played with a zapper and boxing games could bring in footwork via the balance board. The wii era will also be remembered as one where many retro games were either revisited or made available for download much to the delight of old fans.
Typically Xbox and Sony have both moved into motion gaming of some sort but all of that and the refinements of that in the years to come couldn't of been achieved if Nintendo hadn't of had the balls to go in a completely seperate direction. By the time its life officially ends the console will approach the 100mil mark, have delighted new and old fans and created new gamers from the mainstream. All this backed by a completely free internet gaming experience and I'd say the console has been an amazing success..... Now back to Zelda

Why did you stop tracking Canada in your Americas Preview? It's got the same retailers as USA, it's not that hard to track.

It's interesting to see that Wii sales could have been very close to PS2's had it been sold in other markets. Still #2 best selling console ever is something to be proud about, especially with the strong competition taking away sales.

no to forget that Sony just sold that much because at least 33% of the consoles died because of DISK READ ERRORS (every person i know with a PS2 PHAT had to replace it with a SLIM that works perfectly fine even today). And some people just used the PS2 as DVD player. = Wii Wins

So the Wii will ends somewhere around 110M-121M LTD in three major markets plus a couple of millions more in emergent countries. Great!

I think 110M is very possible, with some push during xmas 2012, Wii U will; be out then but surely wii can pull ok numbers to fly past 100M

original DS may actually outsell the PS2 in total sales. That would be a big achievement for Nintendo as even though the DS/Dsi/DS Lite aren't actually home consoles per say, it would still be the game system between the big 3 with the highest sales figures.

I can see DS finishing aroudn 153M - 154M by years end.

The DS has already outsell the PS2 a couple of months ago.

Even if the PS2 is undertracked by a few millions, I'm 100% sure the DS is now higher.

What was PS2 at WW at the same stage?

  • +4
Carl Seece (on 29 November 2011)

Depends how you define when it launched. Japan launch (March) or WW launch (Oct/Nov). If you count it as March, ~87 Million. If you count it as Oct/Nov, it's closer to 100 Million.

99% sure those figures are correct.

So pacing ahead of Wii WW?

  • -2
Carl Seece (on 29 November 2011)

In the next 12 Months, 100%. In the PS2's 6th and 7th Years it sold almost 30 Million units.

scottie Seece (on 29 November 2011)

The only fair comparison is March. If the PS2 had launched in all regions in March, it wouldn't have sold units faster. Sony chose to release their limited supply all to Japan, Nintendo chose to release their limited supply worldwide.

Good sales up till now, but I was thinking it might pass 100M this year but it slowed down for most of the year, Nintendo didn't back it up like before, so 90M is fair

Wii is the best console ever for me, then comes PS1

but It's shame that Nintendo reduced it's potential when they decided to make graphics not as good

  • +2
Emme dark_gh0st_b0y (on 30 November 2011)

Well, thats the genral consence, BUT I think that games like God of War or Final Fantasy 12 on PS2 showed that there still was/is potential in doing epic games with last gen graphics.Plus, Skyward Sord shows that the motion control plus system could still be improved for more immersive gameplay (hear that, LucasArts ????).So, if someone would please do a game of the quality and scale of GoW for Wii (including motion controls), that would push sales again for the system.

@Spurgeonryan, no he said the PS2 already sold another 40m after getting to the 78m mark 5 years after launch. @errorpwns, DS is already over 150m. What's the PS2 on that the DS hasn't passed it already?

Pretty impressive, but what I'm really looking forward to is the day Wii hits that coveted 100 million, making it the first Nintendo home console ever to do so. Yup, these are where my priorities are... :/

Congrats Wii! I agree there was a reason I stood inline 5 hours Nov 19,2006 waiting for this console, it offered a completely new way to game. I currently have around 46 games ranging from super mario galaxy 2 to no more heroes to more casual titles. If you were willing to do a little bit of research to bypass the shovel ware there were some pretty good experiences to be had on Wii.

Few of us love the Wii, yet many of us own one. That says something.

There is a little fallacy in those North American numbers, though. American (USA) sales usually lump the sales they get from Canada and Mexico (both countries make up the North American market). And is a fact that most Mexicans buy their consoles in the US not in Mexico (due to the expensive trade tariffs). Only a fool would buy a Wii in Mexico. Where they sell it for prices that are well above what you pay here in the US. Thus the US sales figures get "inflated" by the purchases done by Mexicans who buy the console here (either by them or a 3rd party like a family member or a friend) and then it gets smuggled back to their country (they call it "fayuca").
