Here we see data representing the global sales through to consumers and change in sales performance of the three home consoles over comparable periods for 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011.  Also shown is the market share for each of the consoles over the same periods.

"Year to date" sales for 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 sales are shown in series at the top of the table and then just below a comparison of 2011 versus 2009 and 2011 versus 2010 is displayed.  This provides an easy-to-view summary of all the data.

Looking at those PS3 and 360 numbers, I still see no reason why they have to follow Nintendo into the next generation so soon. They're flat YoY and are both looking to be having fantastic 2011/2012's. Both still have plenty of room for pricecuts and both are still getting AMAZING support from 3rd parties.

PS4 and Xbox 3 aren't needed anytime soon at all.

Agreed. I also get the feeling the more "mass market" gamer will still find them powerful enough for a while yet.

I agree, but I don't want the industry to stagnate in the graphic level of PS3&X360. Unless they intend to charge less for their games, because developing for an outdated technology is cheaper.

Also, Seece, your "total sales and marketshare for discrete Years" table seems to be wrong for all consoles in 2011... Doesn't it?

Wii at 6 Million, 360 at 6.4 Million and PS3 at 7.6 Million?

Sorry if I'm wrong :P

I think VGchartz shoud include 3DS in its year of year comparison beacause now, 3DS replace DS.

They will probably add it in when PSV releases, but still hold onto DS and PSP for a bit longer.

When I see GT5 inferior to PGR3 which is 6 years old and when I see slowdowns when too much cars are displayed... 3 options : 1/ PS3 is too hard to develop on 2/devs are coding with their feet 3/ It's time for PS4 ! I would say it's time for PS4 in December 2012... but effectively when I see sales, that's amazing to see the HDs flat, I thought they climaxed one year after their slim version... 360 is goinging to be the longest lasting still non replaced console ever with 2005-2012+ (7 years or more) after the NES (1983-1990 = 7 years and 4 months) !

Wow PS3 and 360 are...almost on par with 2010 sales? PS3 I understand, it made up for it's 10% dedicate with a price cut, but how is 360 keeping up with 2010 WW sales and weekly figures?

Amazing, if this keeps up, the gap will be 800k like that year.
