The Japan Preview: 10/30/2011 (Final Fantasy Type-0, Kirby Wii) - News

by VGChartz Staff , posted on 30 October 2011 / 7,586 Views

With October ending, the gradual onslaught of major releases is starting in Japan. Final Fantasy Type-0 for PSP sold almost 500,000 units this week in one of the largest opening weeks of the year. Nintendo's first non-yarn, non-racing console Kirby game in some time also did pretty well on Wii, selling over 150,000 units in its first week. Once again though, due to October buying patterns the top two titles account for the overwhelming majority of software sales, even with hundreds of games available for purchase. When hardware really ramps up starting in late-November through mid-January there could be as many as 10-20 titles selling over 50,000 units in a given week (e.g. the Dec 26, 2010 week) in Japan rather than just two.

1) Final Fantasy Type-0 (PSP) - 482,000

2) Kirby's Return to Dreamland (Wii) - 158,000

3) Idolmaster 2 (PS3) - 40,000

4) Go Vacation (Wii) - 26,000

5) Just Dance Wii (Wii) - 25,000

7) World Soccer Winning Eleven 2012 (PS3) - 23,000

7) Makai Senki Disgaea 4: Fuuka & Desco-hen Hajime Mashita (PS3) - 23,000

8) Gekijouban Macross F: Sayonara no Tsubasa (PS3) - 22,000

9) Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Impact (PSP) - 12,000

11) Senritsu no Stratus (PSP) - 10,000

11) AKB1/48: Idol to Guam to Koishitara (PSP) - 10,000

12) Fifa 12 (PS3) - 9,000

13) Yu Rouki: Part Over (PSP) - 8,000

15) Monster Hunter Portable 3 (PSP) - 7,000

15) Dead Island (PS3) - 7,000

In addition to the games above, Wii Sports Resort (Wii), Rhythm Heaven (Wii), Dragon Quest Collection (Wii), Nintendogs + Cats (3DS), and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (3DS) should all appear in the final top 20 data as well.

Final Fantasy Type-0 is already one of the top selling PSP games in Japan in less than a week on the market. God Eater Burst, the 14th best selling PSP game of all time in Japan, is at about 475,000 units, and was likely displaced by Type-0 this week. As far as first week PSP openings in Japan, Type-0 is behind only Crysis Core: Final Fantasy VII (490,000 opening week), Dissidia: Final Fantasy (500k+ week one), Monster Hunter Portable 2 (740k+ week one), Monster Hunter Portable 2G (840k+ week one), and Monster Hunter Portable 3 (1.97m week one). Every one of those titles sold at least 800,000 units in Japan, and so Square-Enix has a pretty major hit on its hands given the size of the Japanese market.

Kirby's Return to Dreamland was the other big title for the week, selling 158,000 units week on Wii. Last October Kirby's Epic Yarn sold about 90,000 units week one, and has since reached 450,000 units in Japan. The new Kirby game should make a pretty strong run at a million units in Japan if it holds up well, as there has not been a traditional Kirby platforming console game in quite some time.

Looking ahead, several interesting trends are emerging with preorders. Square-Enix's Final Fantasy XIII-2 for PS3, which releases on December 15, 2011 has 140,000 preorders as of October 30, 2011. Final Fantasy XIII, which released December 17, 2009, had 535,000 preorders on November 1, 2009. There is still quite a bit of time for that gap to narrow, but for now it doesn't look like Final Fantasy XIII-2 is trending to be anywhere near as big as its predecessor in Japan, at least for week one (Square-Enix sold 1.5m units of FFXIII week one Japan). Launching near the Vita and other major content for Sony and Nintendo platforms may not be helping either.

Super Mario 3DLand which launches November 3, 2011 in Japan has 105,000 preorders and should sell 200,000+ units week one. Monster Hunter Portable 3G has 195,000 preorders in Japan, and does not release until December 10, and so at a bare minimum the title should sell 400,000 units, and 500,000+ units looks easily doable particularly as the 3DS base will be near or over 3m units by then in Japan. It's fairly likely now that Monster Hunter 3DS will open to figures between the Wii version of Monster Hunter (500k+) and the recent PSP versions (800k - 2m week one). Mario Kart is also arriving in December, but the game is not highly preordered and will have a longer selling pattern than the other 3DS games anyway.

For Wii, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword has about 55,000 preorders, ahead of its November 23 launch in Japan. Twilight Princess only sold about 650,000 units lifetime on Wii & GC, but opened to only 165,000 on Wii, so its looking fairly likely that Skyward Sword will have a larger opening than Twilight Princess did week one.

Great Type-0 numbers.
Should give the PSP a pretty big boost, but probably not enough to beat the 3DS this week.

195,000 pre orders for monster hunters 3G? damn

Kirby had a great week as well, it will surely pass epic yarn considering its a real Kirby game.

As far as I know, Final Fantasy Type-0 is the only psp game of the ones listed above to have also had a simultaneous download version. The 482k figure could easily be much larger as I am sure many players opted for the download version as it was not only cheaper, but will be compatible with Vita and has other advantages. It is also worth noting that Type-0 was priced as high as a ps3 game.

gd preview again and I sure hope those Type-0 numbers are close to reality. I disagree about Kirby tho, I don't think it has a chance of hitting a mil in Jp
